That's strange logic. Especially considering Gillies was taken in the same draft as Shane Savage.

"Gillies will not be any good, because he's younger and currently behind more experienced players"

I'm not saying he is no good. I have no idea to tell the truth. I guess my point is half the hawks supporters on this board are happy to slate Shoenmakers who is at the same stage of development yet then claim Gillies who has not been exposed to anything like the same sort of pressure as the next coming. I don't get it and I don't understand why the Hawks would want to sell their future to find out.

I agree. I'm not sure what needs Gillies addresses.

It is hardly selling our future to go after Gillies.

He is 21 or so. He has had 3 or so seasons in the system to build his body and get his fitness up.

Geelong's backline has hardly changed for the best part of 5 seasons. It is good recruiting to look at blokes at the top clubs who are not getting opportunities (Craig Bolton ring a bell?).

I would prefer us to have a crack at him than draft a 17/18 year old who we need to wait for 3 seasons to be AFL ready. We need depth right now to win a flag in the next 2 seasons.

What attracts me to Gillies is his ability overhead. We have lacked aerial power for several seasons now and only with Stratts and Roughy pushing behind the ball in the ruck are we starting to turn the tide in defence.

If Shoey has a massive preseason in building leg and core strength he could be smashing forwards next year, you never know.

I wouldn't give up two 2nd round picks for Gillies, one and a 3rd rounder maybe, but would prefer one and a 4th rounder. As that outcome seems unlikely I would rather look elsewhere. Two 2nd rounders should get you someone who is a starting 22 backman, or very close, frankly I'm not overly interested in paying overs for Gillies just because he's contracted and Geelong love us. I would rather pick up Curran (who is kpp size anyway) and a mid in the draft to look at future needs.

Send Roughy down back next year and suddenly our backline looks devastating, worked for Croad and Tarrant who became A grade defenders. I believe Rough has all the attributes to be an excellent defender, and the recruitment of Gunston and emergence of Hale and Breust up forward as well as goal scoring mids reduces our dire need for him up forward.

I don't think we(collectively) give the club and it's staff enough credit or understand just how much effort they put into assessing, analysing and critiquing our players and those available to be listed.

Hawthorn know what Gilies would bring. This isn't a spur of the moment passing interest.

He's someone that they were extremely keen on in his draft year(2008), and a childhood Hawthorn supporter who was keen on realising his dream. Geelong took him with the pick 33....we had the very next pick(Shiels).

If we've targetted him, it's for very good reason, and not simply a case of "oh look, there's a kid who's not getting a go.....let's try him out".

What actually constitutes a gorilla?

Based on the current rumored deal the Hawks are giving Lisle and Renouf for Gillies and will not enter the draft until the 50's. I'm not a fan but I do agree the club knows best.

We won't be giving away all our picks before 50.

If the Lisle deal goes through, we've effectively upgraded Lisle for Gunston, and lost 6 spots with our first pick.

In isolation, that alone is a big win.

Renouf for Pick 34 is so-so, considering that Lowden is seen as the heir apparent, and we also have Hale, Bailey and Rough who will share Rucking duties.

Serra for 58 is small win, as we've effectively received a pick for a player that we were going to have to delist, or senior list(low chance of this happening with so many HBF's on our list already).

A lot of monkey business in this thread.

Differing stats on Gillies.
According to AFL Season Guide 2011
Gillies height192
Weight 93 kg

That is the same weight as Croad for most of his career. At times he did approach 100 kg.

So Gillies is built like Croad but 2cm taller. Rutten is 192 cm and 101 kg. It is possible that Gillies would build his body to that weight.

Player profile from the same reference

Played six games in 2009 but found it hard to break into the Cat's defence in 2010 and was seen only at VFL level. Reads the play well and is excellent in one on one situations. A strong defender with good pace. Gillies will be looking for more opportunities in 2011.

He is the size that the club is seeking and that CV reads pretty good. I have no idea if he can play, but the club obviously thinks so.

As a side note, it indicates how fortunate Geelong have been with injuries.

That sounds good enough for me

Im pretty sure Trent Croad held the record for the highest vertical leap at draft camp back in the day. So that made up for his 'lack of height'.

Does anyone know what Gillies reach and leap are like?

There's a muppet on the Cats board saying I.Smith would be adequate compo for Gillies.
His reason being that Smith has only had one year's experience and Gillies has had three.
What you think? Fair trade? :D
We should probably throw in Franklin as well.

The only likely trade more unlikely than likely is pick 33 , the pick for lisle and young but I can't see this trade happening.

Young, Lisle and Renoufs pick?
Remind me to give you a call when I want to offload my next car...

I agree. I just don't see why there is such strong interest in Gillies. I've read all the posts mind ...... still, don't get it ;)

Hey guys,

I really dont think the Gillies deal will be done with you guys, i would rather geelong go for Caddy with our compo pick and Gillies, but saying that i have no idea what Geelong and other clubs are thinking, we just have to wait until tomorrow. I just hope there is a few deals early in the day.

Anyway goodluck for next year!

This will not happen.

Gillies has shown glimpses at VFL level, and looked remarkably good when given a run in the AFL against Adelaide. Plus GFC don't exactly have a huge queue of key defenders lining up behind (besides Bathie, and that's hugely speculative).

We're not going to weaken one area to strengthen yours. Hence the tongue-in-cheek proposed trades.

Plus I think you just picked up a Box Hill defender? Issue over, surely.

The manager said he is disappointed not to be going.

Well done on the hardball, Geelong. Well done

Clearly not happening now. Maybe next year, though. We seem to have planted the idea firmly in his head. It will be interesting to see how much opportunity he gets at the Cats this year.

Well they gotta play him now. If they don't, we can hold them to ransom
