Stynes could well be one of the 5 best melbourne players of all time

Hanley might not even be in the top 5 of the decade for Brisbane

Harley's a very good player an he was set to be a gun midfielder this year but Brisbane already have atleast 2 better midfielders

Sorry, I must have missed that rule....

For the record though, this is 2015 - not that tricky to watch footage of Stynes or any past players.

:)

Hanley is still easy second for mine, and still for mine will pass Stynes - sorry.
Yes, some youtube footage should bring you up to speed.

1. Stynes

2. The rest

yeah your right that is there positions?

Why are we comparing different positions?

Greatest player threads are dumb because players played at different times and different positions.

Stynes was never going to solo a football and step and snap a goal any more than Hanley or Kenelly could win a ruck contest or outmark a KPP forward.

If your perspective has holes in it, it will be pointed out and perhaps even dismissed as rubbish.

If all you have to go off with Stynes is footage, might I enquire as to where you've sourced the footage, which year and games have you been looking at?

4 BnF's, 2 All Australians, MVP winner, Brownlow winner. Might be worth asking yourself what you're missing here.

Don't read this as me denigrating Jim Stynes in any way. I think he was one of the greats, but you listing those individual awards as some type of irrefutable proof of his untouchability has just as many holes in it as the opinion of the Brisbane Lions fan you replied to.

Let's look a little more closely into it.

In 1991, the 25yo Jim Stynes went to a new level.
  • MVP
  • Brownlow Medal
  • All Australian
  • Best and fairest
He'd been good prior to 1991, but in his Brownlow year, he learned to read the game, drop back into defence and mark every long kick which came his way. In many games, the opposition teams played right into his hands by repeatedly bombing it long in his direction. Stynes had a picnic, plucking marks at CHB with his eyes closed.

He was very good to excellent over the next seven years of his career, but he NEVER dominated the game like he did in 1991.

From 1992 to 1998, Stynes was selected in one All-Australian team. From 1995-97, he won 3 best and fairests for a struggling bottom four team, a similar feat to Nathan Jones winning Melbourne's last three B&Fs. It kind of pads out his record in some respects. There weren't many contenders for Melbourne's B&F in those years. Their list was shite! Alastair Clarkson was their leading possession getter in 1996. It was a bit of an indictment on their award that Stynes struggled through many games with an injury (keeping his consecutive games record intact) and had many Demons fans grumbling about his form, yet he was still able to poll the most votes.

Stynes was never a great ruckman in the traditional sense. He was merely average when it came to the hit outs and pack marking. His chief weapon was his mobility and stamina. He played as an extra midfielder for Melbourne.

I don't think Pierce Hanley is as far behind Stynes as you've made out. He's been on the fringes of the All-Australian squad for the past two seasons. If he can earn a spot in the All-Australian midfield, I think that is probably a greater achievement for an ex-Gaelic footballer than converting a 199cm athlete to ghost as a ruckman and earn AA selection that way.

Anyone who doesn't say Setanta is lying to themselves and everyone in this thread and I won't stand for it.

There should be a medal for the accented letters cause how rare is that? And ya gotta respect a bloke who brought back the biff (friendly biff).
