Melbourne, Brisbane & GWS all pretty close as my top 3 & have different strengths... followed by the Pies.

Don't have a standout for 5th.
I couldn't have Melbourne in the top 5.

They look good on paper but there is a vast difference between getting the ball and using it well.

I would rather a good player who can hit a target and make a team better, than a "great" player who has substandard disposal.

Our midfield when at it's best is good enough to compete with the big dogs. Absolutely pantsed Collingwood last year out of the middle.

Our worst is really bad. The Port game we were chasing tail all game.

Symptoms of a very young team finding its feet but I'm very bullish about our midfield going forward. The latter half of the year we were able to close the gap between our worst and best.

For 2024 I think it's hard to go past Melbourne on paper (if we're including Gawn). Games aren't won on paper though.

Neale is definately not one.
Two time Brownlow medalist who could be 3 times isn't in the top midfielders
Fight On University Of Southern California GIF by USC Trojans

Brisbane and Port the top 2 for mine, both have the quality and system to make anyone pay.

Melbourne and to a lesser extent Carlton could be in the next two but the comments ITT ring true, something wrong there.

Giants pretty good, I wanna put the Pies in there but I am biased and we are definitely ageing. Footscray have struggled without Dunkley, like Melbourne there's a balance issue, but the quality is undeniable.

So tentatively Lions Power Pies Giants Dogs.

green averaged over 7 score involvements a game (bont at 7.65 and trac at 8.4 both those guys play a lot more forward though)and has shown some good knack up forward as well (kicked 4 in one game), he will be the best player in the comp next year no doubt
If you compare Bontempelli's heat maps with Green and Petracca's, his actually match Green's a lot more as a genuine two way midfielder.

Petracca is very much an offensive midfielder who also sits forward for significant periods (rather than popping up here and there).

But yes Green is involved in plenty of scores either way.

Yeah, their depth is a worry, but with Gawn, Oliver & Petracca... there is no other side with a better gun 3 in the midfield imo.

Soligo not exciting

Pedlar not exciting

Half forwards that average 11 and 16 disposals a game.

There is a big jump needed for them to be the future of the Adelaide midfield, so how about we wait to see if they can even play full time midfield before declaring them exciting mids.

I agree if we continue ti have Laird, Keys and Crouch in the middle. But if its Dawson, Rachele,Soligo, Pedlar, Berry.Taylor, Hinge, Nankervis, Dowling, running through there with Laird at HAlf BAck and Keays and Crouch in the SANFL then our midfield strats to look exciting
And still has no place in the top 5 for 2024

Bont and Petracca were also well ahead of him in clearances, whilst being ahead in score involvements and kicking goals themselves. Green was good this year, but not on their level yet. As for what happens next year, no one has a clue.

Dawson started at the Crows at half back like he was playing mainly at the Swans... but yet again you are just trying to drown the Crows conversation with inane comments so I won't be replying to you anymore.

Keep up your Crows are crap mantra if it makes you feel better but most good judges think otherwise & that we are a team on the way up.
Dawson played in the centre for our reserves with great success, we recruited him as a forward.

Reserves?

He came 3rd in our best and fairest

He can play any position he likes. Gun.

He played 2 years of reserves before he cracked the ones...
He played in the centre for the majority of 2018

Berry? Wtf
Surely you are taking the piss?

Didn't centre clearances go 18-3 in Hawthorn's favour when we played this year? Your coach thought it was worth a mention!
What is the thread title?
How is your midfield performance in one game this year relevant to it? I mean we got smashed by North's mids for 3 qtrs in the game this year too. Its a long season.

I get you are a keen Hawks fan and want to make everything about your beloved poo and wee but take it to the " who might have the top 5 midfields 3 years from now" thread.

Hawthorn were top 3 for Centre Clearances in 2023, with the youngest group in the league.
Let’s not pretend like the domination of Collingwood’s midfield was a one off.

When you have a midfield which can get you out of the bottom 4 and get you into finals contention, then you can have a seat at the table.
In the meantime there's an active thread just below this one discussing the best up and coming midfields. Suggest all you Hawks supporters take it there for now because you are stinking this thread up with your "but but what about Hawthorn" bs.

bont was (7.61) but trac was actually a bit behind on clearances

no one has a clue
? i mean sure no one can tell the future but can pretty confidently tell whos going to be up there as the best players next year

So was it 1 game or not?

If Games were played on paper the Tigers midfield of TT, Hopper, Prestia, Dusty, Shai, Nank should be bloody elite, sadly wasn't the case in 2023. If Yze can unlock the code to making this unit gel, I think we will suprise a few.

Like I said ...Come back to me when you have a midfield that can get you out of the bottom 4.
Picking one midfield stat to justify your inclusion in the discussion is disingenuous at best.
Hawks supporters are usually a classy bunch compared to most. A few of you are suffering badly from relevance deprivation though I see.

Fair enough I was looking at total, not average. Green has a way to go still.

Prestia is brilliant but never on the park. Bolton is the one who is primed. He'll be 25, he's been durable and his key stats have increased year on year. Next year could be that 600 disposal, 40 goal year that he's capable of. I recall Leigh Matthews was a bit critical of him this year for being nonchalant with the ball and for being too "Hollywood" in general. I wonder if a change of coach will help there.
