Now this is very likely to be a very unpopular idea but here me out.

Jolly's value is currently sky high as he is in career best for. The Swans could easily get a good first round pick for him.

In ruck stocks the Swans have Currie, Pyke and Orreal plus several others who can ruck in a pinch.

It could be dangerous (as Jolly is a very good ruckman) but we need to make some hard decisions to try and rebuild our list and bring in some much needed youth.

Look at what Collingwood fans think of the idea

What does everyone else think?

i can see why some Swans fans will like the idea as we will more than likely be middle of the ladder at the best or below for the next few years and need good draft picks, but i dont like the idea at all.

with Currie/Orreal/Pyke we hav no proven ruckmen and he has been as consistent a player as we have had the last year or so. no way.

What he said.

A good ruckman goes a long way to winning games and our game style demands a quality ruckman. Jolly stays.

no way. gun ruckman with plenty of years left. a high draft pick is no certainy to grab a gun player. Orreal, Pyke, Currie are unproven and might all end up being duds. this youth/high draft pick talk is really starting to annoy. quality players are better then young players.

Can we have a poll for the worst thread in the last decade

I know its dangerous but the Swans havo start thinking about the future.

Jolly has another 4 or 5 seasons left in him so he is still worth something (as he is one of the best ruckmen in the competition). We desperately need youth (desperately) and we could get quite a bit for Jolly.

If Roos has faith in Pyke, Currie and Orreal then he should trade Jolly so we can get 2 first round draft picks (something the Swans havent had in a very long time).

The only way I would consider trading jolly is it someone offered us 2 first round picks and an upgrade of our second round pick....

ie: NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

Why would we trade the player who is the most important player to the structure of our club....... We very heavily rely on Jolly....

Our left over ruckman if we did trade him would be...

Currie
(0 Games)

Pyke (2 Games)

Orreal (0 games)

White (Not a ruckman)

Where is the experience?

Plus he signed a contract two years ago...

i can remember an article that was written earlier this year about Jolly and the thought process that Roosy went through to decide upon going for Jolly in that trade in 04. he went through the first 20 picks or so over the last 10 or so years and it came across that no pick over the course of that time period has had any guarantee (apart from like 1 or something) that a young player selected will come up as an above average player. applying the same theory, the first and 2nd round picks we get could turn out to be good decisions but there is no guarantee that they will turn out to give us more than a fit and firing and in form Jolly will over the next 4-5 years.

i'll try and find the article, they explained it a lot better than i have.

The AFL does not seem condusive to blockbuster trades. We couldn't get a decent offer for ROK, I bet it would be the same with Jolly. and I think he's more valuable to us coaching up Pyke. Currie is doing a damn good imitation of Steven Doyle at the moment, and Beannie is still a long way away.

If we did go down this track, I'd want more than just a draft pick for him. Maybe Pendlebury and the pies 1st pick. Or Davis. Plus they have to take Shaw back. (I was going to ask for Didak, but we still have a no ********s policy).

Hawthorn made some hard decisions afew years ago and traded away players in order to get draft picks. Now they are premiers.

I just feel that in order to become competitive again the Swans (and Paul Roos) will have to make some difficult decisions.

And the other bonus, it would be great for team moral. This is more from the old Freo handbook of plays than Hawthorn .Also when we tried to get Spider a couple of years ago the dawks wanted Jolly as part of the trade.

In the days when ruckmen could win Brownlows I have no doubt Jolly would be very high in the count for his efforts this year.

If we are in this new age rebuild that the new age supporter seems to think must happen then everyone has a price. Everyone.

Ahhhh I see where you are coming from..
But the logic that

Youth >> Experience

Is stupid.
Darren Jolly is what.. late 20ish? Has a good 5 years in him.. Will be around for our next premiership chance... hopefully.

Jolly turns 28 in November.
It was only the other year Jude Bolton was put up for bait by Roos.
You do have to give someone to get hopefully a better someone or ones.
It is a very fair question to ask.
See if we can get in before the crappy drafts to come.;)

I personally think we have a better chance winning a premiership if we draft young talented players. Yes Jolly is very good BUT the Swans need to rebuild and to rebuild you need good draft picks. Its unfortunate but Jolly is the only older player at the Swans who would be worth anything (and by anything i mean a first round draft pick or more) on the trade table.

So lemme get this straight RUNVS... you don't want White to ruck... you want to DROP White... and want to trade away our only other Ruckman with any sort of experience?

Im fine with White in the team as long as he either stays in defenece or the forward line and he starts to show improvement.

I want to trade Jolly for a good draft pick (and perhaps a player) so we can rebuild.

If Roos thinks that Pyke, Currie and Orreal (or just two of them) can make it at a AFL level then trading Jolly is the smart thing to do (as we can get quite a bit for him).

What, Goodes and ROK nobody would want !

Well to be fair, ROK could barely muster a 1st round pick last year. I reckon Goodesy would command at least one first rounder and ROK should command the same but for some reason didnt, and i think clubs will be even more hesitant to let go of their first rounder with the compromised drafts coming.

Still definitely no fan of the idea of trading Jolly. Understand the logic, but just would not do it, too important for us. By the time we get to a place where we can challenge for another premieship, we should have our ruckmen in the same position as we did when we won our last one.

ie.

2005:

Jolly the young ruck on the rise and Ball the experienced, strong ruck

2012 (onwards):

Currie the young ruck on the rise and Jolly the experienced, strong ruck

Dumbest idea ever.

It because of Jolly we aren't 2-10. There is no way our back-up rucks are ready to take the number 1 spot. Not for a few years yet.
