As a club we've had our backs up against the wall again. One of our own has made a bad mistake, the injuries to Brayshaw are horrific (I completely believe Gaff's version of events) and the media have been feral with their attacks. So feral that Melbourne Airport decided to whisk Gaff off the tarmac with a police escort to protect him and the regular folk from the media, much to the disbelief of that very same media.
The health and well being of both Andrew's has taken a back seat to the click bait media frenzied outrage. Put your hand up if you're surprised.
Mark Brayshaw seems like a very level headed man, shows how crazy the media have become that the victims father is already asking for Gaffs forgiveness.
I thought the club made the right decision on Monday to call a press conference.
I feel Trevor Nisbett came up short in shutting up the media and instead gave them more opportunities to heap on us. Nisbett has a strong desire to control the messaging when people are talking about the club, which I understand but sometimes you can't reason with the pack and this was one of those times. The visuals of young Brayshaw meant that everyone was out for blood. The sad thing is that if this was 'just' a concussion, the response from the media would have been more measured. It's the crazy world we live in.
Given Nisbetts previous commentary around off the ball punches something along the lines of "Our thoughts are with the Brayshaws. Gaff is devastated at what has happened and takes full responsibility for his actions. Even though he did not intend to strike Andrew in the face, he and the club acknowledge that throwing any sort of a punch can have devastating unintended consequences and for that we are sorry to the Brayshaw family and the FFC. We would ask the media to respect both the Gaff's and the Brayshaws and the AFL tribunal process and refrain from the headline grabbing frenzy and commentary that has accompanied this story. It is not helpful for either of the young men involved in the incident. Andrew has requested to make a statement later in the week after the AFL tribunal process to apologies."
Take responsibility, shut them up and move on. It's hard with his character being attacked but the more we defend the more they attack.
Thankfully it looks like golf gate hasn't taken off but just what an unnecessary thing to say. RTB Lyon is an A grade a**hole but why stoop to his level. At the end of the day he'd seen Brayshaw in that state and that would have been hard.
We should have been using this opportunity to stamp more violence out of the AFL and shame the media, who have proven yet again are just a bunch of self-serving twats.
IMO Simmo has handled himself much better as he continues to play a straight bat.
Thankfully, with the tribunal over we get closer to a new week of football for people to focus on.
Wishing Andrew Brayshaw all the best with his recovery as well as Gaff on his road to redemption.
Or maybe you all disagree with me, in which case mods just delete the thread.
