Autopsy vs Eagles - Round 19

Ahern and McMillan off half back. No pressure applied. They can rack up 30 ineffective disposals each game off half back but it means nothing when you can’t apply pressure or tackle or stop your men from having 10 score involvements.

Perhaps ahern could fill that space. Looked great at times, just needs more time to learn the defending caper

I’d be very happy to leave him there for the rest of the season and see what comes of it.

We need quality disposal coming out of defence. We have some warriors down there, but need a bit of silk to go with it. Considering Ahern probably hadn’t even stepped inside a defensive 50 before today, he was ok.

At least Ahern was getting the pill. The other bloke is just shit at everything.

I don't share the Goldy love. He had no impact until game was over. Hickey and Allen took the honours for almost the entire game.
He was fair, but that's not enough given his talents and seniority.
He wasn't alone though. Did Jack miss with injury/illness?

Jy and Jack have been poor last 2 weeks but were very good for the 4 weeks prior. That's the major difference. You can't carry 2 midfielders getting around 10 possessions only.

It’s a flow on effect

We can’t get a clearance for our forwards

It gets leaked out so easily and then puts our defenders under constant pressure by the multiple inside 50s

It all starts in the middle

Agree.
Some of his tap work was good, but his lack of physicality against blokes he is capable of smashing shits me to tears on a regular basis.

I think we need a new fitness coach. I don't know what we do at pre season training but we seem to be the most unfit team in the comp.

also before every single training session, including preseason, I want it to be mandatory for every player (except for cunners) to practice 150 handballs with their left hand and 150 handballs with their right hand. our players should be embarrassed with how many simple execution of the handball they get wrong. we put ourselves in so many unnecessary positions because of poor disposal.

now today was disappointing but I am still very bullish about our list. hopefully with another preseason under the belt for our youngsters, they will lift another level. there is definitely a lot of talent to work with. also i would love to have a bit of luck with injuries. It seems like every year we get dealt the most shit hand when it comes to injuries. it would be nice to see best 22 on a regular basis.

Our leaders and seniors were poor at all levels - holding ground in contests, sticking tackles and using it effectively.

Ok outing for a couple of young ones.

Nothing impressive from the coaches box either today.

When is Ben Cunnington back from injury? Haven’t seen him for a few weeks.

The major problem:

Higgins 19 disposals, 3 tackles, 3 clearances, 78.9% DE, 4 contested possessions, 4 I50s, 1 R50, 86% ToG
Cunnington 21 disposals, 4 tackles, 5 clearances, 85.7% DE, 11 CPs, 3 I50s 1 R50s, 79% ToG
Anderson 20 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 clearances, 65% DE, 10 CPs, 3 I50s, 1 R50s, 71% ToG
Ziebell 12 disposals, 6 tackles, 4 clearances, 58.3% DE, 8 CPs, 1 I50s, 2 R50s, 75% ToG

By comparison:

Gaff 33 disposals, 1 tackle, 6 clearances, 81.8% DE, 12 CPs, 5 I50s 3 R50s, 88% ToG
Sheed 31 disposals, 5 tackles, 4 clearances, 80.6% DE, 8 CPs, 5 I50s, 2 R50s, 83% ToG
Redden 27 disposals, 7 tackles, 5 clearances, 85.2% DE, 11 CPs, 4 I50s, 2 R50s, 83% ToG
Yeo 26 disposals, 7 tackles, 9 clearances, 69.2% DE, 14 CPs, 5 I50s, 2 R50s, 74% ToG

117 disposals vs 72, down 45 disposals by the 4 core midfielders.
45 CPs vs 33
24 Clearances vs 14
20 Tackles vs 16
19 I50s vs 11
9 R50s vs 5

For the whole match it was
376 disposals vs 343
27 hitouts vs 42
43 clearances vs 34
137 CPs vs 133
56 tackles vs 43
51 I50s vs 46

Statistically, the team variance doesn't suggest we should have been bent over and rogered but we had almost no impact by our core mmids, we had no drive or direction by our midfield leaders, we were completely impotent and it put our backline under severe duress and compromised the quality of supply to our forwards.

This is why we won’t know the Shaw effect until next year. Remember all these guys fitness has been built under Brad

If he gets the gig, I expect us to be different in regards to our fitness in 2020

oh and lets not forget about that f@%#wit Gerard healy. you can guarantee he does not want Taz in the AA team. his comment that he isn't even in the picture is just putrid. although Taz had a game he would want to forget, he has been a colossal this year and thoroughly deserves to be in the team.

he is such an egotistical prick and his hate for north is so evident, that if I ever meet him, I would just go up to him and whisper in his ear, "you do know you have a hole in your wig"? I bet the paranoia would settle in very quickly for that half bald flog.

This is not a new thing - it's happened repeatedly - will Shaw react? - will he make a statement that Bard couldn't and drop one of these blokes?

OK the scheduling was a freakin joke - where's the Melbourne game in between at least?

That said, West Coast look like the best side we've played by a fair bit. They defend kicking down the line better than anyone with their brutally strong half backs and their 3 small forwards are super quick and agile who work all the way up and back. They have pace on every line.

We have too many inconsistent, one paced players with average agility - they're everywhere. The balance does not work. Atley, Williams and Zurhaar were conspicuous for us because they could keep up and compete at ground level.

We have to trade out some of these slow players - whether they be backmen who can't play on smalls or talls or midfielders. Last year the same thing happened against Collingwood and nothing happened.

The idea that Shaw or any coach could come in and turn that list into a premiership winning one was fanciful. We had to get rid of Scott and now part 2 is trading/moving guys on. Big job for Rawlings and Shaw.

It isn’t fitness as in something that can be fixed. We selected players that have limited tanks and or limited speed. Complete athletic players are rate for us. Atley, Polec and Higgo would be the three. Most sides only have a couple of non-athletes. We are paying for poor list building.

Not all doom and gloom though, Scott and Walker look promising while I have high hopes for Taylor too

So wanted to blame the umpiring today, but actually wasn’t that bad, far better than the last 2 weeks s...t fests. We were absolutely out gunned by a team stung by last weeks 1 pt loss, seeking some redemption. Let’s not panic yet.

They sucked. So many 50-50s went the Eagles way and some blatant free kicks to us just weren’t called.

That must be run by the same people who said Labor was going to win the election. Goldy is terrible and gets worse each week.
Flogged by Allen!

Lol. He was one of the few reasons we were still in the game at half time.

Didn’t get to watch the game live, just sitting down now to watch the replay. Can tell already the defensive work rate just isn’t there. Eagles finding free targets too easily. I was expecting this sort of let down to be honest.

Yeah reckon that went both ways tbh. Didn’t impact the result obviously, unlike the last couple of weeks.

Being at the game today, surprising the poor decisions by polak and froggy really cost us. Speed on the spread and and a couple of pressure gun small forwards are priority one.. Richmond seem to have some up for grabs. Ziebell love him, he is cats head hard but so often gets zero ball, Will go down as a shinboner that could have been..
So many north supporters in the West but Jesus... it's been 20 years since we were feared.
