AFL trades: Bulldog Marcus Adams expected to join Brisbane

The Western Bulldogs are set to lose contracted key-defender Marcus Adams to Brisbane during the trade period, which begins next week.

The Queensland destination is a surprise because it had been recently reported that Adams was considering a move home to Western Australia, where he was recruited from WAFL club West Perth.

Adams, who also had interest from Collingwood, was understood to have been offered a four-year deal to join the Lions. His desire to leave the Dogs was a mystery because he only re-signed in May last year for a further three years, taking him to the end of 2020.

Should Brisbane be successful in attracting the big defender, it would allow them the luxury of playing their star back man Harris Andrews in a more versatile “Jeremy McGovern” role.

And should Adams move on, he would be the second key defender to leave Whitten Oval in two years, following the exit of Joel Hamling to Fremantle following the Dogs’ 2016 premiership.

Adams, 25, has been plagued by injuries in his three years at the Bulldogs where he played just 27 games. A foot injury kept him out for the second half of the season in their premiership year. He played 10 games last year and six this year.

After the Bulldogs won the first two rounds of 2016, coach Luke Beveridge suggested Adams might have produced one of the best opening fortnights by a rookie key defender.

Adams, the 35th overall national draft selection the year before, proved to be a revelation in his first two games at the elite level. “I’m not sure, over history, too many defenders have played two games like that up front,” Beveridge said. “He’s set a pretty high benchmark early.”

The Bulldogs, who were leading the charge to recruit contracted Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard, will lose free agent Luke Dahlhaus to Geelong this month. Dogs ruckman Jordan Roughead, another free agent, had held talks with rival clubs including West Coast about moving to a second club.

Brisbane has picks 4, 22, 40, 58, 76, so not much different in the way of ammunition to Collingwood.

I hope Adams goes. I'm sick of hearing that he wants out when he's been milking a pay cheque for three years. The club have given him the opportunity to play AFL and he's spent the majority of time in the sick bay now he's shopping himself around? Pfft. Sayonara

Is there any intel whatsoever as to why Adams' want's to leave?
Pretty frustrating.

i think he thought i gave him a funny look last time i saw him in the supermarket in yarraville

given his apparent fickleness, it’s probably just this

My intel: While Marcus is not hated, there's plenty at the club that Adams is not friends with (nearly all). He is renowned for putting on the headphones and doing his own training (weights sessions, cross training etc) by himself.

Not a hanging offence but he really is not liked by the boys so best if he explores opportunities where possible. This is also why he hasn't requested a WA side as he's not "homesick".

Makes me wonder why he thinks it would be any different at another club to be honest. Sometimes you are the problem not your teammates.

Was just about to post the same. He might be best to go back to WA where at least he has family and, presumably, friends. Maybe the girlfriend doesn't want to go.

If the club and players can't deal with someone like that and make them happy enough to stay then we won't be going anywhere in the near future.
So if any other player in the AFL who is a bit different they will never want to play for us. Probably takes away a lot of gun players with egos.

If true, it does speak poorly of the 'leadership' at the club. Everyone is different, try something FFS to make the guy feel welcome or part of the group.

Maybe they are Intimidated by his biceps and his enormous presence in the showers not to mention his bench press numbers.

Maybe theyvet tried lots of things and yet still the sick note wants out?

Exactly! This default position of assuming the problem is as simple as the guy is different and we have no leaders to deal with it is tedious. No different to other workplaces where there are people who will simply never click, irrespective of the approaches taken

DOGS AND CATS NOT IMPRESSED WITH LIBERATORE, DAHLHAUS’ HOLIDAY

BY SEN 5 HOURS AGO

The Western Bulldogs and Geelong weren’t too impressed with a holiday taken by Tom Liberatore and Luke Dahlhaus this offseason.
The pair was infamously seen in a video posted on Dahlhaus’ Instagram page, where he questioned claims of motivation by former Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy. The video contained swearing.

Dahlhaus is likely to join the Cats this offseason, while the Herald Sun is reporting Liberatore was given an ultimatum when he returned to Australia, where he has two weeks to prove he deserves a new deal.

“I understand that to be Libba,” the Herald Sun’s Sam Edmund told SEN Breakfast, when asked about the whisper in this morning’s paper.
“I think what’s accurate to say is the club weren’t exactly thrilled with the nature of the holiday.”
Garry Lyon solidified that point, saying it wasn’t only the Bulldogs who weren’t happy with the trip.
“That’s underplaying it (saying the Dogs weren’t thrilled with the holiday’s nature), and neither were Geelong, the football club is supposedly the home of Luke Dahlhaus,” Lyon said.
“How could you be happy with that video getting posted?
“I don’t think it’ll be an obstruction (to the deal being done) but I don’t think they were too impressed with it.”

WESTERN Bulldogs list manager Sam Power has confirmed the club's interest in securing Port Adelaide star Chad Wingard.

Speculation has swirled that Wingard has been tempted by big money offers from the Bulldogs and several other Melbourne-based clubs ahead of next week's NAB AFL Trade Period.

DOGS' SECRET WEAPON The chase for Chad

The Dogs are looking to add some much-need firepower to help their poor conversion and goalkicking that's hampered them over the past few years and have identified the 25-year-old playmaker as a key target.

Speaking to AFL.com.au at the NAB AFL Draft Combine on Thursday, Power says Wingard is a player they'd like to complement their young list.

"There's no doubt we've got interest in Chad," Power said.

"There is a lot to play out and a lot of movement through the Trade Period, but we're always looking to improve our list.

"We definitely have some interest in Chad."

Port Adelaide football manager Chris Davies told NAB AFL Trade Radio on Thursday morning that Wingard was yet to seek move away from Alberton and the Dogs are also yet to get a clear indication on where the contracted forward wants to play his footy in 2019.

The Dogs are likely to dangle their first-round pick, currently selection six, as part of the deal to get the Power to trade them the two-time All Australian.

"Chad hasn't (told he wants to come to the club), but we've obviously signalled to his management he's a player of interest to us," Sam Power said.

Wingard took to Instagram later on Thursday afternoon to address some of the speculation around his future and said a statement will be made "when the time is right".

While they're looking to bring in Wingard, Power says the club is keen to retain the services of midfielder Tom Liberatore.

The 25-year-old is resuming from a second knee reconstruction in his eight seasons at Whitten Oval, and talks with his management will ramp up following his return on the weekend from an overseas trip.

"All the talk has been really positive with 'Libba' and his manager Tom Williams, so we've had some good discussions over the course of the season," Power said.

"Tom's been overseas and only just recently returned, so we'll deal with that and work through that over the short-term, but we're really confident Tom will be at the Bulldogs next year."

There's been no movement on a new contract for free agent Jordan Roughead, with Power saying he was yet to hear back from the premiership ruckman's management on a contract offer.

Power also confirmed Richmond forward Sam Lloyd had indicated to the Dogs that he wants to call the Kennel home next season.

"Sam, through his management, says he wants to come to the Bulldogs, which is fantastic," Power said.

"Now it's up to Richmond to tell us what a trade will look like.

"We definitely like to think (the trade will happen) because we think Sam is a player that would add to our list and we'd love him on our list for 2019."

Power was "surprised" to hear second-year ruckman Tim English's name thrown around in trade speculation and says the West Australian is enjoying his time in Melbourne.

He also said the futures out-of-contract duo Mitch Honeychurch and Tom Campbell are unlikely to be sorted until after the Trade Period.

Jeez, really?? They are wringing whatever pathetic mileage, or millimetreage out of this that they can get. Pre-trade week, scrabbling around for something, anything, to get attention, even stuff that's OVERRRRR! Just shits me, how do Edmund and Lyon get JOBS in the media, they are nothing but muck-raking scabs, wasting everyone's time.
