not sure if unpopular but a lot of the great coaches were simply right place/ right time, not to discredit their achievements, i am sure they had their influence
Hard to define a great coach obviously most people will point to stats but how much of is it great list, environment and other factors going your way.

Yes because come the 2000's key forwards played interchangeable roles that some would come out of the goalsquare (including Buddy), but forwards and play was more active and mobile generally, in that Buddy played a lot of his career working up the ground but running back to the goalsquare in a way that no 90s player ever did because player roles were far more stratified in the tasks they were asked to do.

As a Swans fan you surely can't have forgotten the numerous times Buddy took marks within 30m of goal. Just because he worked up the ground didn't mean he also didn't take marks in the goalsquare.

Things become different over time, gee.

It's really not hard to understand

90s football: average team might take 15 marks near the goals. FF takes 10, CHF takes 5.

2000s-now football: average team might take 15 marks near the goals. Key forward that plays closer to the goals takes 8, key forward that works up the ground (Buddy Franklin,), 7.

Richmond was still competitive at stages in the 90's (although yes, I was too young) and 2000's (not too young), however I think the industry has changed and it's becoming less viable to financially prop up clubs simply for sentimental and historical reasons. At least not to the point of having 18-19 teams.


Sure...if half the clubs folded due to financial reasons the AFL product might stink a bit but I doubt anyone would miss a team or two that much tbbh.

North Melbourne's rebuild in recent seasons (one of the slowest and least convincing I have ever seen) will fail and they will soon be overtaken by the improving Richmond and West Coast Eagles, the Kangaroos continuing to languish at or near the bottom of the ladder for years to come getting chopped up week after week.

The AFL should have either forced North to relocate or let them die. Losing teams like Fitzroy was overall good for the competition, it just did not go quite far enough as Victoria should have no more than 8 teams.

I concur.

But we have to address the feelings of people who would be upset by the relocation (Tas makes sense, tbh).

I wouldn't be upset personally. Roos + Aints to merge as Tas.

Never mentioned flags as flags is an awful way of determining how good a player is since AFL is not a one man game and who gets flags is often largely down to where a player was lucky enough to get drafted. Lockett never won a flag, but I don't think anyone is going to argue he was a worse player than Cameron Mooney.

I already missed out on tickets to the games at Norwood and Lyndoch. Playing the games exclusively at small grounds would make buying tickets like the Hunger Games. Not in the fans' interest.
