For me it was a passage of play when we were playing the Eagles at Subi in the wet.
Monfries threw himself into a couple of packs with amazing courage but i will highlight one instance in particular. The ball was punched towards our centre half forward line from the centre, there were several players running with the flight of the ball and several coming from the opposite direction. The surface was drenched, players didnt have great control of their footing, it looked a recipe for someone getting really hurt.
Monfries, a skinny 17 year old dived into the pack for the ball much harder than anyone else I could barely watch, it seemed that reckless and then it appeared as though he got kneed straight in the head from someone sliding in from the opposite direction.
His body went limp - i have seen this body reaction from others in the past and i know there is no getting up for them. I felt sick for Gus and dissapointed that a young gun looked like he'd been k'od after starting so brilliantly in such a high intensity game. Amid the frenzy, play went on and the ball moved about 30 metres from that incident. There were players going for the ball and then all of a sudden Monfries was in the thick of the action again. I remember laughing like a madman, it was inspirational. Pure captaincy material.
Also JJ in the same game got his cheekbone smashed, barely flinched and played out the whole game. You see the tough action heros in movies, JJ seems like a real life version to me. His head looks like it is made out of steel it doesnt look like a normal head. He doesnt look like the sort to ever whinge or complain. After the game he looked like a gladiator that had been defeated with the rain pooring down on him, but it wasnt he that was the reason for the defeat.
Anyway that game really stood out to me as the Eagles are a very good team in the wet at Subi. We really challenged them that night despite being ravaged by injury and bad luck (Stants hitting the post near the end of the game). I felt we really did have a future. What was your highlight/s?
