Analysis What's Different

Control.

Control of the footy: When we've got the pill, we decide when we go forward.

Control of skills: We regularly go at 75%+ when we deliver it.

Control of the game: When things aren't working, the coach often responds. And we've now got opposition coaches so spooked they start Brownlow Medallist midfielders at full-forward.

Plenty of things driving our footy club, as we all know. But on game day, for me, the biggest difference is the improvement in Brad and Matt Crouch. Our midfield was our achilles heel in that final against Sydney last year, but that is no longer the case. And to think, they are only 23 and 22 respectively. Should only get better.

Looking at the numbers for 2016/17 not too much has changed. The opposition this year was not as formidable.
There are some areas we are slightly down. Sloane had a better 2016. Same with Eddie. The improvement has come from the whipping boys of 2016. Douglas and Mackay have really stepped up. Brad is improving as well.

Matty Crouch has been outstanding as has Sauce and I think our coach has learned from last years finals failure.

I think it is a much more even contribution from every player. If Sloane has a quiet game we can now deal with that. A very mature mindset.

The difference is we've simply matured as a club, and building that "team" morale.
A few have slightly dipped in form, but others have picked up the slack. The main theme is that there are individuals playing for the team, rather than a team of individuals.

Organic growth (Crouch, Crouch, Greenwood, Kelly, Atkins, Knight)
Veterans upping their game (MacKay, Douglas)
Improvement in our depth putting pressure on our best 22 to perform and seamlessly stepping in when a player goes down (Keath, Otten, Seedsman, Gallucci, Milera)
Another year playing together in a largely settled team
Steely resolve
Hunger for the ball and pressure acts
Tweaking of the game style with less reliance on sling shot footy and goals out the back

Midfield is supremely better than last year. Crouch brothers are capable of shouldering our midfield rather than just chipping in. Plus the improvement of greenwood and Douglas have been instrumental.

Also playing with more poise and control moving forward!

Coaching - last year the game plan was still missing a few pieces and mostly Plan A, Pyke now is a few moves ahead.
Crouchs - one is an AA and the other is playing like one
Mental - they all believe they should be there
DMack & Douggie - second half of the season these two veterans are playing like the 150+ gamers they are.
Sauce - been a lot better this year
Depth - play s**t and you're in trouble. Gold cards, ripped up.
Time - this has been in the works since 2015. Young group, new way of playing, new attitude. Good things take time.

Patience.
When we have the ball we move it quickly but we're not forced to take the first option, often the second option is better and turns out to be more damaging.

Belief. I said something somewhere last week that the way Tex and JJ have been speaking has almost seemed arrogant, but it's a confidence well earned through belief.

Development of Crouches
Rise in form of our experienced players (Douglas, Mackay, Jacobs)
Coaching - an extra year's experience has done Pyke and his great tactical mind wonders in regards to working out a great gameplan
Improved skills all round
Aggression and belief

This.

Belief. In the past we have always gone into the Finals with the feeling we were lucky to be there. This year the players know they are the real deal and you can see it in the way the play and the way they hold themselves.

Control.

Control of the footy: When we've got the pill, we decide when we go forward.

Which leads to control of the programme. The ability to rest/manage. The ability to choose options for training loads.
