Part 2 of this thread is here:

The loss of Charlie Curnow is/has been pretty big too, and kind of goes under the radar. Was tracking to be an elite key forward, and has some charisma and a bit of campaigner about him. He draws ridiculous numbers to him, which allows other players to get free, but he's also able to kick 7 off his own steam.

McKay doesn't anywhere near his ability one-on-one despite his size.

Their drafting and trading has been absolutely horrible for a decade. To be a cellar dwellar for the best part of two decades and still not be able to contend at any stage is disgraceful. Top draft picks galore, top picks in pre-season drafts, salary cap room to entice free agents, top talent galore via SOS / GWS relationship. And here we are 20-years later with a list that looks further away from a flag than any other team except the Kangaroos.

Rather a greater volume of games than just the first two this season to make a call but do agree with the call that there isn't that killer instinct in the club so far. There needs to be a stage where getting close just isn't acceptable, otherwise you build a culture where you think you just can't beat those teams. That culture needs to be coach led, he needs to be very vocal about the fact that near enough isn't good enough.

Have you got the Hodge equivalent who is available, can be immediately placed on the list who can sell a winning culture? You don't sell a winning culture, you build it. And you build a culture based on a sound game plan and players buying in to that plan and executing their role.

It's not as if there are game breaking players sitting on the sidelines, not getting a game because someone like Murphy is getting a game. The fact is, sweet FA can be done about the list until the end of the year. Until then, there are three things that will have a bearing: 1. game day / coaching tactics 2. player performances 3. Injuries.
Should have been looked at in the past... I’m not saying this week.

they bring in a bunch of kids with virtually no guidance from successful experienced players ? Even the coach Bolton at time can’t exactly lead from experience.

I would say their lack of ability to develop players has been a far bigger problem than their drafting and trading.

Sacking Ratten was the worst decision they’ve made in 20 years.
Carlton's Norm Smith moment, the Ratten curse to hover for two decades.

Still laugh at their season promo from around 2010 "They know we're coming" - and then they promptly went south. On a par with Essendon's 2012 promo "Whatever it takes"

Stocker, wasn't he the top 6 pick they got for a steal at pick 19? What's he up to?

Ah, I miss Bolton's 66 game rebuild with all its "green shoots"

I always laugh at that... if your a top 6 pick you go at 6... stocker was a pick 19

The other issue for Carlton atm is Teague is coaching for his job and future senior coaching prospects and wont make any major changes which may impact week-to-week performance. Senior players need to be dropped when they don't perform, but Teague needs wins so they'll stay in the 22 by default.

Reckon we'll sound out a coach with senior experience by the end of the year.

Weitering, McKay and Curnow in 2015 was a great haul. Since then Walsh is the only first rounder that's a sure thing which with pick 1 should just about be expected. SPS at pick 6, Dow at 3 and O'Brien at 10 makes for ugly reading. Not to mention the ridiculous amount of duds from other clubs that they have cycled through which many Carlton fans still seem to justify as not a bad path to go down. With the array of great picks they have had over the years, they should have much better young talent than they do.

Ross Lyon should get the job. At least you’ll play in a GF

They lost by a couple goals only fading out late in the game to two of the better teams in the comp, I hate Carlton as much as anyone but ya'll need to chill it's round 2 ffs.

This has been brushed over IMO, how poorly Carlton rated this draft

Have a look at the first round from this draft and tell me how on earth you have Liam stocker rated at 6, I'm not sure its possible to so poorly misread a draft. No wonder they didnt want to trade pick 1 for picks 3 & 6 from Gold Coast. Sam Walsh is great but imagine if they'd had King and Smith instead.

Saad has been good so far, but we've had little control of either game and haven't been able to get him breaking the lines. His defensive efforts and some of his kicking has been top shelf.

Midfield is letting him down.

Right, so Collingwood are one of the better teams in the comp now? After hearing all off season about how they'd tumble out of the top 8 after all the upheaval over the past few months?

And if there's ever a good time to get Richmond, it's in round 1 after a shortened pre-season, when they don't usually hit their straps until July. As another poster has pointed out, the surprise Brisbane and Geelong losses in round 1 was evidence of the impact of playing until late October last year...

Assuming Carlton start faves against Freo next week, load up on the Purple fever!

Have to say, I was really impressed with the Pies last night.. Darcy Moore has become one of the premier defenders/stoppers in the game, and some of your kids like Noble and Daicos, carved us up.

Saying this is an embarrassing loss for Carlton is doing Collingwood a disservice.. You have a very hard working team that clearly still buys into the coach and his message.

Wish I could say the same about my lot.😡😡😡

I think this points more to our development (which is a shambles) rather than drafting and trading. Even with below average drafting/trading you should still be able to spike at least a couple of elite talents every 5 years or so if your development is fine. Ours is clearly the worst in the league I would have thought.

nah nah nah....lets not wait until the end of the season to judge.

Lets go off two games against the team that won the flag in 2020 and the team that finished 6th.
