Matthews without a doubt should have gone mid way through 2000.Agreed Special.
Shinboner, you are right their list is second to none, maybe Essendon have more depth of talent.
The problem is that in Queensland Matthews is perceived to be a legend of the game. Whenwill people realise that jsut becuae you can play footy, doesn't mean you can coach.
Also continually throughout the year up here in Queensland we heard that the players were unhappy.Once or twice maybe but not continually. Its a small place the footy comunity in Brissi.Too many players are unhappy.Including the captain Michael Voss, Leppa, Akermanis, Ashcroft, to name a few.
No Brisbane have major problems. They will neve reach their full potential until a full review is done of the football department staff, and until the administration staff stop interfering with the players minds.

Asgardian,

I think you are a bit generous with your list of coaches that are safe for the next year. Any caoch that performs badly without any mitigating circumstances is in danger of getting the sack!

I would prune your safe list to the following, and put the others in the 'in danger' list:

Daniher
Malthouse
Matthews
Pagan
Sheedy

The last 2 Richmond coaches haven’t lasted 2 years. History is against Frawley! Judge and Ayres weren’t successful in their first attempts, why should their second be any different? Drum has plenty of opportunity to lift the Dockers. Time for some payback.

Dodongo follows brisbane and doesn't like Leigh. Dodongo says Matthews should be ashamed of himself. Dodongo liked Matthews first year but has gone way off track now. Dodongo thinks the Diet Coke has got to him. Dodongo's son Dodongo Jnr doesn't like him either. Dodongo's wife likes him a bit. Dodongo don't like the way he coaches. Dodongo prefers a better coach. Dodongo thinks Drum will go at the end of Round 8. Dodongo is predicting the future. Dodongo says Drum will be gone by round 8. Dodongo wants you to remember that. Dodongo will coach. Dodongo will enjoy coaching. Dodongo's son Dodongo Jnr can be an assistant coach. Dodongo will appoint Jethro to be his slave. Dodongo likes that idea. Dodongo is not happy at Leigh. Dodongo wants to coach. Dodongo has experience. Dodongo used to play footy once. Dodongo quit due to old age. Dodongo is only in his early 30's. Dodongo's son Dodongo Jnr plays footy. Dodongo's son is a Center Half Forward. Dodongo's son Dodongo Jnr is following in Dodongo Snr's footsteps. Dodongo's son Dodongo Jnr will make AFL. Dodongo will be proud. Dodongo hopes Spidergirl doesn't get hold of him. Dodongo won't like that.

Me thinks your nickname should be Drongo and you should stop beating the Drum!!!!

Okay, I'll throw up another one. I'm a little disturbed by rumours coming out of Princes Park regarding Brittain and his relationship with some players. This coupled with my Post-Parko depression and the Blues high expectations to further the work of the last two seasons means that Brittain will soon find himself under a lot of pressure if things start to go bad. Brittain has to go it alone now and therefore will be sheltering all the blame for the negatives whereas Parko used to assume all responsibility. Pre-Parko, Jezza didn't last long and he was the clubs favourite son and a premiership captain-coach. Wallsy was sacked mid-season and he was a premiership coach. Granted they had at least two seasons to prove themselves but they also had a few brownie points racked up with the blues faithful.

A first time senior coach at a club that rightly or wrongly demands success probably more than any other club. A tough position to be in. Having said that, he will see out the year at least unless the Blues are fighting it out for the spoon, then we'll try anything to avoid it.

The chances of this happening are one in a million by the way.

Ok - coaches this year

1)Gary Ayres - Adelaide

Great player but I honestly think this guy can't coach. The Crows don't sack coaches mid-season but if things go really bad, he could be the first.

2) Leigh Matthews - Brisbane

A footy legend who has done alot to shore-up the game in Queensland. Apparently the players hate his guts but he won't go - the Lions are too good and will continue to win (almost in spite of him really)

3) Wayne Brittan - Carlton

Will be under the microscope this season. I believe him to be a pretty smart operator, but his severe lack of playing experience could make it hard to earn the respect of the club.

4) Mick Malthouse - Collingwood

I can't belive he hasn't been mentioned as a coach under pressure. Eddie McGuire may have alot of explaining to do if things show no sign of turning around this year.

5) Kevin Sheedy - Essendon

Safe as houses, still a total megalomaniac.

6) Damian Drum - Fremantle

Is doing a great job with not much, personal relationship with Charlesworth will absolutely crucial. Unless the Dockers really go backwards (highly unlikely) then he is safe.

7) Mark Thomson - Geelong

Did very well last year and the goodwill will continue this season, even if the Cats slip a little.

8) Peter Schwab - Hawthorn

Unfinished business here, working to a long term plan, this guy is required untill further notice.

9) Neal Daniher - Melbourne

Safe. Difficult to fault him at all since 1998, the question is whether the squad will come to play again in '01 or will it be another '99 ?

10) Denis Pagan - Kangaroos

An interesting 'rebuilding' year ahead for Denis, like Sheedy the job seems to be his for life.

11) Mark Williams - Port Adelaide

Cannot afford another performance like 2000, both in the box and the in front of the microphones ! Needs to chill out a little and maybe grow up and realise that the big league is a long long way from easy SANFL Premierships.

12) Danny Frawley - Richmond

Will he survive another 9th finish ? Richmond have a tradition of knee-capping their own, but for once I think Frawley is actually safe for the whole season, Final 8 or no Final 8.

13) Malcolm Blight - St Kilda

All eyes will be upon him thats for sure. You would have to say he is safe as houses at the moment but what will the mood be like at Moorabbin if the miracle fails to materialise ?

14) Rodney Eade - Sydney.

Highly respected among the coaching fraternity for his tactical nous, knowledge of the game and player management skills. All the new-age scientific mumbo-jumbo in the world will not stop the knives being sharpened if the Swans chronically under-achieve again.

15) Ken Judge - WCE

Must drop the negativity and try and regain some of no-frills common sense approach that served him well at Hawthorn. Cannot continue to call his players useless and then expect them to perform - it dosn't work like that !

16) Terry Wallace - Western Bulldogs

Will continue to work miracles with what is only a 'good average' list. Often compared with Rodney Eade I think he is better as he has a better record with a worse list. Will probably end up as the best coach to never win a flag (sorry Dogs fans)

cheers

Kevin Sheedy will be sacked after Round 1, when the Kangaroos avenge their finals loss from last year.

SAV kicks a dozen on debut as the Roos humble Essendon by 120 points.

Ayres, Judge and Frawley with my early tip being Frawley if the Tiges don't perform early in the season. There seem to be a lot of problems down at Tigerland with Matty Knights getting the sack as captain and with the problems they've had with the salary cap (and the doubt that cast on a number of players futures).

Gary Ayres has been pretty useless since he got rid of the mullet.

I'd be very surprised if the Tigers sacked Frawley during 2001. In a way, Frawley reminds me of Wallace over at Doggies in that he's getting a team to play above themselves. I didn't think Spud would do as well as he did in 2000, but he's got his list playing a hard brand of footy....they need to give him 3 years to see his plans come to fruition.

The other thing is that the Richmond administration is different from the one that ruled with an iron glove (the old Graeme Richmond days) or the one that worked under immense financial pressure and were probably forced into making bad choices (the Leon Daphne era, or more commonly known among non-Tiger fans as "I'm Nick Daffy and I run the club").

If the Tigers sack Frawley, they may as well pack up the entire club as well.

i agree with u totally SB frawley has come into the club and laying the law from day one.our past admin.have had to look at short term solutions not long term and coaches like walls, geichan etc never had the resources or the time to put their game plans etc to work.frawley has the resources and more importantly respect of the players not only for what he had to do regarding otto and daffy but the way he played the game.
i for one would be extremly be pissed off if the tiges did do their usual coach the scape goat saga on frawley.
for other coaches well id say judge and ayres are under the most pressure and for a smokie britton he may be his1st official year as top coach but he,s been their for a while so he wont be afforded the 1st year coach may take 2yrs to get his message across like other 1st yr coaches.
cheers!

This is what I have written previously on this topic. It is in the Richmond board and also on RoarPower.

Posted by CJH:

In the Herald Sun dated 25/9/2000 there appeared an article written by Geoff Poulter eulogising Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy. It reads in part:

"KEVIN Sheedy left Richmond in fine shape when he took over as coach of Essendon for the 1981 season.

The Tigers had just won the premiership by a then-record 81 points with Sheeds as one of their specialist coaches.

Twenty seasons later, we have seen 99 coaching changes at rival AFL clubs during Sheedy's unbroken stint with the Bombers. And, remarkably, the most have occurred at Punt Rd.

The Tigers have made 11 coaching changes while their favorite son has directed four Bomber flags, been twice runners-up and made three preliminary final appearances.

..."

It is my opinion that this statistic is the single biggest indictment that can be made at the club over the past two decades. Eleven coaches in 20 completed seasons. More than one every two years. That is far, far too many; there has never been the requisite stablility to create the foundation that enables success to be built upon.

I know that not all the coaches were sacked - Alan Jeans left because of health and strictly speaking Jeff Gieschen resigned, although I think his days were numbered anyway.

No matter which way I look at it, I feel that the reason for failure in so many coaches can fundamentally be traced back to poor management.

Too often we have seen the board take the 'tough' and 'ruthless' decision to axe the coach. Rubbish. There is nothing ruthless or tough about it. Given some more thought, I think it is actually quite jelly-kneed. When the team is travelling badly, I've no doubt that the board is placed under extreme pressure from various factions, including sponsors, coterie groups and the membership / supporters in general. It is my perception that too often, the board caves in under the pressure and pulls the trigger. Not very tough at all.

We have seen instances where the process for choosing a new coach has been very poor - or even non existent. It is not Robert Walls fault that we performed so badly, as he shouldn't have been there in the first place. The management acted with far too much haste and appointed him based on reputation alone without any proper consideration of whether he was right for Richmond. As it turns out, he wasn't.

Leon Daphne was quite public in his support of Jeff Gieschen, tying the fate of the coach to his own. He was also noble enough to make good on his word by falling on his sword. Very noble. Not very helpful though. A case of too little too late. Mouthing words of support do little, what was needed was support were it mattered - a strengthened coaching department. I get the feeling that the support staff were procured from the coaching bargain basement.

The past 12 months have shown that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps by good luck rather than good management all the obvious contenders were snapped up by other clubs - in most cases, seemingly in haste. This left the management with the time to go through the process thoroughly - to find someone who would fit the position at Richmond rather than fitting Richmond around the someone. (not withstanding that Danny is implementing changes to improve the culture).

The second ray of hope comes from the appointment of the support staff. It is probably as good as any going around. I'm sure I read an article where Craig Kelly was quoted as saying that the improvement in the coaching had changed Brad Ottens perception of the club and it's future and was one of the key factors in retaining Brad Ottens. (The article was from about mid season - after Brad had quenched his thirst)

I'm sure if we submitted our end of season reports, the coaching staff would get quite a good mark - maybe a B+?

The big test is still to come however. We know that a teams fortune is like a roller coaster - especially at Richmond! Have no doubt that sometime in the future times will get tough for Danny Frawley. The question is, how will we (all Richmond factions) react? Will the guilotine come out again? I hope not.

Let us have the collective strength to work our way through the problem. Then we can start challenging for greatness.

Dodongo is a legend. Dodongo has hundreds of friends at the local pub. Dodongo's Eldest son is Dodongo's Eldest son Dodongo Jnr. Dodongo's Eldest son Dodongo Jnr is a 13 year old. Dodongo only posts under Dodongo. Dodongo isn't a sad case like Jethro and others. Dodongo thinks you post under 2 different names. Dodongo don't like that. Dodongo's name comes from Africa. Dodongo is Dodongo's surname. Dodongo's given name is Dispertrayto.

erm. look at page 1. I immediately nominated the Malthouse boy as under pressure to deliver by round 8.

Agree that Frawley is safe - or rather should be safe - but we are talking about the hachet throwing club here.

Thompson, Daniher, Schwab, Eade and Wallace all look up to it too.

My jury is still out on Drum.

Ayres and Judge are two highly successful con artists in the sense they both still work as coaches...

BSA,

The only reason I feel Malthouse is safe this year is because it is widely understood that Collingwood are still rebuilding and not a lot is actually expected of them. Not at least until 2002. I feel this is when Collingwood expect to see some progress from their youth investment.

Safe for 2001. Under the microscope in 2002.
