i've noticed a few people who still get a bit teary eyed over the fact that interstate teams play in the afl and was wondering if you like it or dislike it.

just for fun

You forgot the 2nd part of the question, do you warrant the destruction of history, traditon and state leagues for the advancement of a national comp? Thats what your advocating when you vote yes, the destruction of history and tradition.

What a load of crap. If you advocate the VFL - then in effect you'd like to see the slow death of Australian Football - as funding dries up, media interest declines, players gravitate towards other codes that offer better financial rewards. We all start playing rugby or soccer.

The sheer bloody minded shortsightedness of some people really amazes me! Haven't you learned anything about how the world works!?!

Mate you have me wrong, I want the AFL just not the one we have at the moment. Thats what the question is referring to, I want an AFL with real WA and SA clubs like East Fremantle, Glenelg and Claremont as oppossed to the franchises we have now (excluding Port). If we had a comp that had these clubs, it would still be stable.

Ok, well I'm glad to hear you are in fact an advocate of the AFL.

That's good.

But to wish to see suburban clubs like Claremont, Glenelg and all in the AFL - well, you and I both know you're in cloud cuckoo land there.

The biggest problem with that has always been - which clubs do you pick? Which clubs inevitably get left behind? That's why new franchises have generally had to be started up that combine supporters of these local clubs.

Obviously Port Adelaide is the notable exception to that - with good reason. Their dominance of South Australian footy for over a century is unprecedented and unparalleled in Australia. They are a special case, whether you like them or not. (I don't - we haven't beaten them at AAMI since we last made a Grand Final!)

who cares about history? all i want to see is fantastic games of footy. at the moment the quality of football is fine and the competition is tight (besides geelong). nothing wrong with the AFL right now.

**** history and tradition.

by the way, i do realise linga will reply with 'you only say that because your club has no history'

just saving you the trouble of typing it.

Loved the old VFL. I would have preferred the VFL to stay along with the other state comps with an expanded state of origin concept. State comps could start earlier and the SOS could play at the end of the season with all states involved.

I think everyone wants the AFL, the question to debate though is in what form should that national comp be?

Some want new clubs that have no allegiances, whilst others want it comprised of existing, local teams from state comps around Australia.

Sure the VFL was great, but it's history now. Leave it there.

For the record, I have no issue with the current comp as it is.

The VFL was great for what it was, but times have changed and the code has quite rightly seen the need to make a more integrated competition across the country. As much as we all bemoan the disintegration of traditional suburban leagues, it was really an inevitability. The challenge now is to balance the needs of a growing national league while still maintaining viable links to the past. The SANFL is still going quite well and the WAFL survives, though not as well as the SANFL is currently. While it would be great to see these leagues return to their former strength, it is probably not likely in the near future. In time, however, as populations increase then the possibility of the second tier comps becoming more viable increases.

SANFL posted a profit this year

AFL by the width of the universe.

The non Vic teams seem well supported. WCE, Freo, Crows, Port, Syd, and Bris all draw well.

There are already some very good intra and intersate rivalries.

WC v Ess generally seem to put on a good game

Freo v WC and Adel v Port are pretty entertaining viewing for the neutral fan and seem to have the necessary passion.

the big old style VFL games still appear to be well attended.

+ the state leagues would not have survived healthily.

The Swans went to Syd because they were going under, Fitzroy died because they were small and i'm convinced that the Bullies and Roos would probably have disappeared from the VFL.

Also the VFL would be like the EPL with no salary cap and 3 or 4 big sides and the rest feeding for scraps.

The AFL was the right thing to do at the right time and probably helped the sport survive as a major sport in Australia

stuff history and tradition.
we can create our own history and tradition with the AFL.
VFL is no more important nowdays as SANFL or WAFL

AFL :thumbsu: It's good for the health of the game . The recent developments re the GC show that the game is gaining increasing prominence outside of Victoria

I like the AFL, but I can see the point of having other state clubs involved rather than franchises.

Undeniably the AFL is the VFL with some additional teams. Perhaps the AFL should have been formed from scratch by all leagues with a relegation system in place giving all state clubs a chance to compete for a spot in the AFL. It would have made things much more interesting as well as giving all supporters equal rights when discussing club history. It also would have inhibited the creation financial goliaths such as WCE.

Could you imagine a relegation match between Carlton and Collingwood or Glenelg and Port, sending your rival back to the old league. Talk about invoking the traditions of Aussie rules, it would have been brilliant.

That is something that I personally would love, however Population in Australia probably wouldn't allow it, and I think you would find interest in teams not in the Big League start to fade (Look what happened to the VFA) I think ideally the best thing would have been keep all state leagues (VFL/WAFL/SANFL etc. and let them all have franchises that fund the state leagues, while the state league funds the Franchise (re. Adelaide WCE) thats where the big bucks would have been at, while still keeping all the tradition in everything. unfortunately the way the game has evolved will never ever happen or even close.
