Whitnall...
Lance might not be the most athletic individual, but he is without doubt the smartest footballer going around. Watch Lance in action as the ball heads toward the forward 50 - he continually outsmarts defenders and orchestrates setups. He can send an opposition defense into complete disarray. With the Blues growing defensive KP talent, I really hope Denis pushes Lance forward more in 2006. Still only 26 or 27yo, but is now one of the few veterans on the Blues very young list. His experience will be invaluable guiding the Blues highly talented although very inexperienced player group. A great footballer. As for Croad - watch his effort V Fev during their last encounter - just pathetic. Little wonder why the Hawks tried so hard to poach Thornton

You people are deluded. I watched Croad PLAY on Whitnall early last season. Carved Big Red up like I've rarely seen anyone do. Make him look slow, old, third rate and quite simply pathetic. Pagan moved him off Croady quick smart. Croady was hampered in the last half of last by wrist and other injuries. He'll come back hard in '07. Even before that game, I woulda said Croad, but after that, I'd pick Croad about 8,000 times before Red once.....
Croad was pathetic. Go back and watch the game. What made it worse, is that Croad had 2 other players supporting him against Fev, and still got completely humiliated. Some of Croad's dummy spits that day were quite sad.

Whitnall is still a better footballer than Croad despite being slow and unathletic and Croad had to be coached because he is an athlete playing football. A HBF in Walker pantsed Croad since he is even more athletic and Croad wasn't injured.
Whitnall kicked 70 goals at just 21 years of age and he was AA that year when Croad was dumped for pick one at 21, Whitnall has done more in his career and he is a natural footballer so he gets my vote, but his career could be on a slippery slope if he isn't careful.

That was the game that saw Whitnall moved forward after Croad kicked 4 goals against him (the 5th was kicked against Walker late in the game) & finished up with 21 disposals, 16 marks & 3 goals. Even, though he lowered his colours early on, Whitnall was good enough to turn it around & finish the game as Carlton's best player. I don't remember Croad being able to do the same in the game where Fev touched him up.

Think 2007 will be Croads last year at Hawthorn. The next stage is a trade to Bulldogs or North, then retirement. Seems to be the usual pathway.
I think it's stupid to base who is better on two games last year. When considering who is better, you must take into account their whole careers. Whitnall played better in 2000-01 than Croad ever has. I know that's looking in the past but if you look at their careers overall, Whitnall has been the better player.
