Port Adelaide
Excluding any local derbies or traditional Vic timeslots, who is your biggest/most hated rival from outside the state housing your own club?

The AFL rivalries page mentions only a select few from recent times, and I feel like there should be more considering some of the ones listed have been dormant for a while:

It’s either Port Adelaide, Brisbane, or GWS for us. They’re the only interstate sides we had any significant history with. Well, there’s also Adelaide in the 2017 Grand Final but that felt more like a once off thing.

I’m probably going with Port Adelaide because it feels like our games are close and exciting regardless of ladder position. That’s typical of rivals, so that’s probably Richmond’s biggest rival interstate club.

Port or Brisbane for the Tigers.

Bulldogs and GWS have developed a good rivalry over the past few years.

Don't think there is one tbh, and the same would be said for a lot of supporters I think.

I'm too young to remember any of the early 90s West Coast rivalry, but that's certainly died down this century, although it was a sore point for older Cats fans.

Lions seem to have a weird one sided fixation with us after the two recent prelims, but in fairness that's just my experience.

Port don't like us too much, and with completely fair reasons (119, Ken), but the irony is myself and a lot of Geelong supporters have a real soft spot for them, so I'd count that out. Have a lot of respect for their footy club.

Freo and us had a moment there in the early RTB years, but nothing that's really stood the test of time. Similar with Adelaide after Danger, but again nothing major.

Sydney would have to hurt us in a Grand Final to restore any life to that rivalry, so who knows there....and then there's the expansion clubs.

Aside from the main ones which get everyone up when both sides are doing well (Pies/Blues, Dons/Blues, Tiges/Pies, Hawks/Cats etc) most of the rivalries these days only seem to last a year or two and fade out pretty quickly.

West Coast and Port Adelaide

West Coast - two of the biggest interstate clubs and clashed in memorable finals over the years including the '90 Drawn QF, '07 SF, '12 SF and '20 EF.
Port Adelaide - The Prison Bars, Kane Cornes, Kochie and Eddie.

Port quite comfortably.

Ignoring finals, the games between the two sides have been high quality for years.

I tend to agree. I reckon Port supporters probably would too, not that I care what they think. Also having lived there for 15 years made the rivalry more personal.

theres a couple of other Eagles finals as well - 1994 @ the WACA when we lost by 2 points and 2018 QF when we were in front with 8 mins to go but lost by 16, can’t Remember any other finals that year…

Probably Port for us, but I don’t mind their fans. I also respect their hard nosed side when we’ve played them.

Maybe Brisbane also that we’ve had a couple of good finals that went each way against them.

Went to the 2019 Qualifying Final and the crowds general lack of understanding of the game and the rules was pretty obvious. Seem to love the motorbike handles and singing one line of Sweet Caroline though. Felt like they left that night in almost as good a mood as us Richmond supporters. To be fair I wasn’t sitting in the area where the true ‘rusted on’ fans were. It was a nice environment for an opposition fan to be in.
The AFL are doing well propping up the game in Brisbane and we are seeing results with fan engagement.

Gold Coast fans have the biggest indifference to the result of the game in my view. Their home games are like carnivals, and the result almost inconsequential to the fact you can get fairy floss the size of your head and characters on stilts parade the outside of the ground entertaining the crowd. Great spectacle, now they just need to latch the locals onto the game itself. I was livid when Gold Coast won after the siren last year, whereas most GC fans around me squealed in delight then got back to their cotton candy. How can you possibly hate them?

Very similar story at Sydney games. Personally, I think it's an interesting tactic from the AFL.

For the more rusted on types (E.g us on this site) it's a weird experience. It'll be a big final, it's 3QTR time and your side is a chance to pull it off.....and then suddenly Sweet Caroline starts blaring from the speakers with the crowd singing in unison. The game and the stakes are almost forgotten.

I have no doubt it attracts those who aren't rusted on fans, and I know for a fact that up here it's presented a family friendly atmosphere to those without a footy background.

But jee, you would hate to be a Pies fan in last year's prelim. Couldn't be any closer, completely heartbroken...meanwhile, you've got people who couldn't care less about the game doing karaoke next to you. It would be a melancholy experience to say the least.

Feel like the fan engagement has a time and place, but should be left out of finals IMO.

Port Adelaide for probably historically, we don't like each other it's fair to say the least & we knocked them out in a Prelim at home against the odds.

Richmond v GWS is building.
Although some would say Brisbane is a rivalry, I probably wouldn't we had massive win streak over them & it's only the last few years where they have beaten us when we have declined & their list is prime.

Being Collingwood, we wouldn't have an interstate rivalry, as we are loved by all :)

We are certainly loved by the interstate clubs bank balance when we go there

The Bulldogs GWS thing is just so cringeworthy. A rivalry concocted by AFL marketing and pushed by channel 7 to try and make up something that was not there. Seems like the AFL did a poll of which clubs have no perceived rivalry's and no interest in their games, then set about trying to create one.

Yeh not really. The last one (prelim) was kind of expected. The first one hurt as we should have been better. But apart from that most of us couldn't care less about Geelong. Maybe apart from the fact that it's been nice going into games against geelong with some hope.

Subtle. I like it.

You couldn't be more wrong.

The rivalry is real Screenshot_20230726_092446_Chrome.jpg

I don't know if there is much hatred between the clubs. There have been a couple of interesting finals matches each having their own embarrassing outcomes.

Most people wouldn't know but Richmond was the only club to support our case to enter into the AFL in 1991 before the Crows.
