Yeh old draft selections seriously need an astrix next to them. The amount of time and effort etc put into recruiting now days means it's completely different. Sure there will always be a late bloomer or a smokey that makes a decent player from a late pick. And players drafted with great expectations that fail but you won't (many) out and out stars drafted with late picks.

There wasn't any TAC Cup in those days either... only Under 19's so you could literally hide away a talent and nobody would know. Scott Burns was just a 17 year old playing Norwood reserves, he wouldn't have registered on anyone's radar back then except Collingwood who had some Norwood contacts due to our previous acquisitions of Craig Kelly and Tony Francis from the Redlegs in recent years before then.

Goldsack is a good honest battler who will have a good career by getting the most out of himself. Of course it's not an exact sceince it is however simple logic the early the pick, the more players to pick out of the more chance of getting a good one. I can garuntee if you look over the last 10 or so years more out and out stars come early in the draft then late. There are always going to be exceptions and a lot of it comes down to development aswell but it is silly to think draft pecking order does not matter.

I'm sure all teams have their Bo Nixons. Some guy's just can't take the next step to AFL, be it skill wise or mentally.

But I'm sure with the strict scrutiny the players come under nowadays, you'll find on average the top 10 draft picks turn out way better than the next 10. And them better than the next 10 etc.

Your always going to have exceptions, late bloomers, players slipping down the order because of injuries ect.

No he hasn't. Silly thread. For all the people suggesting good players coming from high picks, lets see you build a team with pick 79, or Pick 90 every year.
