Worst player to play in a grand final??

Mark Athorn (or something like that) - Carlton 1993.

great call. forgot about him. he tried to rough up long, and a few of our other players in the first quarter. think he spent a bit of time tagging long (norm) as well.

did he play another game after that?

Aaron Shattock. Even Lethal knew he was that bad. 2 players got injured early on and he only played about 5 minutes in the 2002 Grand Final. Talk about being gifted a premiership .

Grand Final was his 3rd game and he went statless. Only played 3 more games in his career.

and then played in a grand final win 7 days later with norwood in the sanfl where he was equally as crappy.
may have had 10 touches between the two games.

I think all of these players deserved to play in their grand finals! I played in a premiership this year, and i'm sure i was the 21st or 22nd player picked. I still busted my ass tho, and feel i deserve the medal as much as any other player on the team.

As bad as he is he did ok. 19 hit outs and 9 possessions. Gardiner had 8 touches and King had 5. So he was better then them. Plus he's got a medal around his neck. Beat that.

Worst player - Aaron Keating. Right place at the right time. Nothing more. Utter dud.

Worst game by a player - Leon Davis. Kicked 30 goals that year, wet blustery conditions that should have suited a clever crumber like him, and he brings up the big goose egg.

I still have nightmares of him fumbling around with the ball in the centre. I don't know if Ronny De Iulio would have made much of a difference, but Athorn was a massive selection blunder that disappointed me deeply before the ball was even bounced.

Ben Beames from Melbourne got donuts in 2000. He was the late in for Cameron Bruce.

Troy Simmonds got 2 hitouts and amazingly got 2 freekicks yet no possessions (is that a record?). I know that he couldn't take one obviously because the thug Michael Long polaxed him. He went on to be a decent player though.

Do you reckon anyone from this year could go on to be in this catagory? Sean Dempster perhaps? I wouldn't say guys like Varcoe and Milne because they are normally decent players.

And two other factors make this even more bemusing.

Not only is he one of the worst players in the comp, but:

1. There were several far superior players left out of the Saints team, including Eddy, Armitage and Hudgton.

2. He was under an injury cloud with a strained calf and was effectively lame after half time, leaving the saints a man down.

I can live with a dud player making the Grand final when there are no better options, but Lyon has made a truly terrible call here and due to the result it should be rightly criticised.
