Where are people getting this idea from that vaccines are meant to completely stop anyone from getting the virus once vaccinated?

That is never how they have worked. The flu vaccine does not work like that.
You are right, but that undermines any argument for vaccine passports or privileges/restrictions based on vaccination status. We have none of those things for flu vaccines.

Yep, it’s a strange idea people got about it. All this talk of get us vaccinated so we can open up was rubbish.

Problem is people are thinking if this like a proper vaccine and not just a flu shot. But some people actually think the flu shot stops them getting the flu too!

Well if heaps of people got vaccinated it would reduce the spread and theoretically lead to herd immunity which would make the virus far less to worry about. That’s the idea.

The flu vaccines and herd immunity have been pretty effective over the years in preventing anything catastrophic from happening. It doesn’t stop the flu from circulating but it stops the world been infected with millions of bad flu cases.

Not going to be able to travel until atleast mid 2022. Wtf? What is the point Of the vaccine.

this has politics written all over it.

our basic Human rights are now being taken away from us. The vaccine reduces Covid severity and spread down to a flu. You cant stop people travelling because of the flu.
I think that the mid 22 timeline is cover for more vaccine rollout issues as well as covering for an election.

Yep it’s abusing our human rights for political cover and vaccine failures.

no money for building a mass quarantine hub. It’s almost like they want to keep us locked down from the rest of the world. Turn us into a hermit state.

Many people in this country actually want this, due to fear or ignorance. This is why there is a complete lack of pressure on the government on this issue. Those who have personal challenges due to being cut off from the world are drowned out.

Lockdowns were initially about preventing hospitals from being overrun.

Hospitals haven’t faced this problem since April 2020. No extra funding to build up hospital infrastructure and staff levels has been made since Covid outbreak.

then lockdowns were about giving us time to get vaccinated.

now lockdowns aren’t even about vaccines? Are they here forever As long as the bulk of Australians are scared of foreigners?

government doing nothing to expand Our quarantine capabilities.

all the businesses reliant on foreigners are slowly failing and losing their political clout. Those that benefit from lockdown are increasing their political clout.

this could very well be a permanent transition to a hermit kingdom.

as long as there are new variants of the virus the politicIan’s can just say we don’t know if the vaccine will protect you.

So we stay locked off from the world forever.

Tyranny of the uneducated majority.

North Korea has the same problem with its population too.

Movement means virus apparently.

Having gone through the s**t we went through last year in Melbourne, and with international travel the largest risk factor for the virus, I'm comfortable living in our hermit kingdom for now if the alternative leads to lockdown.

but you won’t go through the sh** last year cos people will be vaccinated. The virus will no longer be dangerous. It will still spread. But we shouldn’t care about it spreading To the point we lock society down.

There will have to be a moment where government makes the switch to let the vaccine carry the burden of keeping us safe but I don't see that coming anytime soon. I struggle to see it happening at all, given the appetite for cases at the moment in Australia is effectively nil.

H.L. Mencken - The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Deaths in Britain are now 7.3 per cent below the five-year average. The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that there were 766 fewer deaths in the week ending April 30 than would be expected for this time of year.

The story has played out exactly as many non-doomsayers foretold. Covid-19 was mostly a danger to those who were already very old or seriously ill. Once these people died a year or two early there will be a lower death rate in the ongoing years. The long term effects of missed vascular and cancer screening appointments will potentially have much more impact on 'years of lives lost'.

It really hasn't.

This is a 'broken clock right twice a day' type thing.

Not going on holiday overseas is a basic human right now?

The UN better get to updating the Human Rights Charter:

Article 1
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

Article 2
Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.

Article 3
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

Article 4
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.

Article 6
No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Article 7
Everyone has the right to fly to Bali.

That study was when they didn’t have the dosage right.

When you say they didn’t have the dosage right, they ****ed up.

One of the AstraZeneca trials mistakenly gave the wrong dosage to thousands of volunteers. By happenchance it worked better than the planned dosage. Corporate AstraZeneca spun the message so that the accidental results combined with the planned trial was declared to have a joint result of 62%. effectiveness.

As far as I know AstraZeneca never went back to any previous testing phase after the accidental dosages.

Also AstraZeneca vaccine.

Feb - completely safe
Mar - blood clots are conspiracy theories
Apr - blood clots are rare
May - vaccine not recommended for under 65s!
Many countries have suspended its use.
Name inexplicably changed to Vaxzevria.

You really want to go down that route?

ARTICLE 13
2. Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

Not to mention how many other Articles have been violated in the past year.

I mean, the UN has even said that restriction of movement is a 'practical and necessary method to stop virus transmission, prevent health-care services becoming overwhelmed, and thus save lives'.

Access to health-care and the right to life are a thing.

Get an exemption and then take your chances getting back.

What do those rights even mean in practice? Right to access healthcare means you can't be arbitrarily denied it, not that there must always be available capacity. As for a right to life, everyone in this thread will lose that at some point.
Get an exemption and then take your chances getting back.
I had no overseas plans prior to Covid but I'm able to consider things that don't personally affect me. I'm merely pointing out that leaving Australia is not some spurious desire but something that the UN has recognised as a universal need.
