Every player in the league would be on a cycle of something. PED testing measures for levels above what can be naturally produced. If player X naturally produces low amounts of testosterone for example, a cycle to bring them up to just below detection levels would have enormous performance benefits for them without 'cheating'.

Well all of the club doctor's are told about strikes the AFL's illicit drugs testing, so its not really much of a stretch.
They're probably advised that any player that does get a strike shouldn't play until their system is cleared.

It’s obviously both, but they’ll claim it isn’t.

It literally only impacts "im competition" prohibited substances. Because WADA/SIA don't care if you're taking them outside of competition. But other PEDs that are banned at all times, don't actually achieve anything because SIA still do out of competition testing.

Yep.

And it’s a policy that is defensible on many levels imho. Illicit drugs are endemic across society and blanket bans simply do not work.

The AFLs responsibility is to the integrity of the game and the safety of its players so testing for performance enhancing drugs and anonymous counselling for players caught with other substances would seem to be a responsible way of managing this issue.

But FFS be transparent and honest about it rather than keeping the policy hidden until exposed.

I wonder how many of the AFLs media partners knew about it but kept the secret because of their reliance on AFL income?

This cover up stuff is the bigger issue and just adds to the mistrust of AFL House.

Oh and let’s not forget that AFL players are promoted as role models by the AFL, regularly visiting schools and other community places outside of game day duties. Where is the responsibility there? Our own clubs Indigenous and community programs across SA and the NT for example.

One of the dumbest things that gets repeated ad nauseam whenever this drugs discussion surfaces is the idea that AFL players are just normal 20-something guys doing what normal 20-something guys do and that they're just a microcosm of the community at large. This is an utterly absurd notion.

Normal 20-something guys don't work in an industry where the average salary is upwards of $400k. Normal 20-something guys work real jobs in the real world getting paid real wages and then go out with their mates on the weekend to let their hair down. Normal 20-something guys don't have access to doctors and psychologists on tap should they have mental health issues. Normal 20-something guys aren't role models to kids who idolise their every movement.

AFL players are NOT normal 20-something guys and the expectations placed on them should NOT be commensurate with other 20-something guys.

They are professional athletes, that’s their job. Meaning to be in peak physical condition.

Means no, drugs, no booze, no smokes, nothing that effects you from being at your optimum. That would be my expectation as an employer.
Whatever you do with your 6 weeks or 8 weeks off ensure you come back in peak condition to perform at your best.

Otherwise be an amateur footy player and party all you like.

I still think first rounders drafted could be under 21 every other round over 21, too many kids being drafted too early.

AFL policy is a bit different, you need to test positive 27 times and then the AFL sends a letter to your mum.

Those that self report confidentially to a the doctor avoids a strike even if they test positive. That is why the three strike rule is a mockery.
