If you take out his kicking for goal Hale looked pretty good. It was frustrating as hell to see him lining up and missing but it was heartening to see him having a dip, leading and taking some marks and going in and getting the ball once it had gone to ground.

Of course, his work on the ground is better... 14 rounds in. But hes supposed to be the main target in the forward line and he cant kick to save his life.

The frustrating thing is he can kick, he's proven that in the past... today he couldn't hit the side of a barn though

His inconsistency has always been a problem, i still think the best bet would be to play him in the ruck, hes not bad there. That will pump up his trade value a bit come end of year, maybe give him one more chance in the forwards and see if hes any good otherwise play him as a midfield roving ruckman?

Jones was just as bad, the misses in the corridor are just unforgivable. Jones at least made up for his crap kicking by sinking some bullshit goals on the big angle but we need to develop some consistent and reliable forwards. We had the opportunity to put a fair bit of space between us and them in the first half and just muffed shot after shot.

Thought it was one of his better games for the year, apart from his kicking for goal, definitely benefiting from the ex Laidley coaching.
Food for thought though he is leading a lot more now and as such takes marks further from goal, thus having to stretch his distance, another tall who needs to get in the gym asap.

Agree completely with this, im sick of everyone talking about how bad our midfield is when in my opinion at least, the forward line is far worse.. at least most of the time our mids do a reasonable job, and we have some young guns coming through that will strengthen the run through the middle over time.

Our midfield wasn't good today, largely because we didn't take them on. I think speed wise we kept up with the Doggies for most of the match last week in the middle and I think the Swans are significantly slower than them, but we didn't take them on, break the lines or run in numbers which was disappointing. We had a few good runs and those usually resulted in shots on goal in the corridor, our forwards really let down the side by not converting the easy shots.

The inclusion of Wells, Campbell and Ziebell into the side plus get some runs into Harvey and Anthony will help a lot in the middle. It is likely shizen for the rest of this year but I think we have real potential to make a very good midfield group.

We still have too many guys not putting in four quarter efforts though and we wont win games and be a consistent side until we get the vast majority of the side putting in four quarter efforts.

Long-term I think our forward structure will include Hansen, Tarrant, Warren, Campbell, Thomas and there is room for one other key tall forward there. It really comes down to which of Petrie, Hale, Edwards, Jones, Josh Smith or Wundke stick their hand up and take the next step.

That is correct you guys completely outplayed us during the first and second quarter, well to be frank you should of been 3-4 goals up at the end of the first and then the whole complex of the game changes.

Was a good hard game today bad luck on the result but I'm sure these types of games are quite beneficial to your young brigade.

For all their inconsistency, Hale and Petrie have shown they're capable of match winning performances. I'm going to need a bit more evidence before automatically replacing them with an untried rookie.

FWIW, I thought Hale looked like a decent target today. Of course 0.4 is crap, but he generally isn't too bad in this area. I was more worried by the way that the Swans midfield seemed to find an extra gear from the third quarter which our midfielders just couldn't match.

In a nutshell, this is the only way to analyse a game like that from our point of view. We now well that this year is a write off for us, and the coaching change couldn't come at a better time, given the overall age of the list.

But all that aside, I still almost smashed several furniture pieces at my place while watching this painful game.

The skill errors when we are tired are what cost us today.

I cant wait for Lindsay, Campbell, Edwards to come back.
Sure that bunch dont have high to be an easy target like Hale but they can snag em from the bondary with some magic,
take hangers from out of nowhere or just dart through contests and bang em in with there pace.

I'm fine with trying a rookie. But I don't think a rookie is the answer at Full Forward... not straight away, anyway.

I agree, because we were only a few points up at half time instead of a whole bunch of goals it made it very easy for the game to change, a couple of goals and the Swans got a real sniff.

But, with hindsight it is probably better to get that close with a team that is 3/4 young than scrape out a win with a side that is 1/4 young. Swans were cleaner in the end but I felt it was the inclusion of a lot of experience into the side that generated that significant advantage towards red time in the quarters.

I think Swans will have got the better of the contest for 2009 but for 2010 and beyond giving our kids that opportunity will probably do more for us in the long-term.

Swans have got a few nice guys coming through but don't think they are giving enough of them the game time given how many that were on the field today wont be there in a few years time.

He had some good chances today and missed them all.He could have pulled us over the line but he let us down today.Has to improve or i would like him to go the 2nds and get some confidence.They have to kick the easy 1s and not miss them.it cost us today no doubt about that.

Yeah, that is a fair call, but seeing what other options we have I am more optimistic of the unknown than the known.

They have shown they can do it, they have failed to prove that they can play at an acceptable level in a key position consistently. Petrie turns 27 this year, it is not like he has 3 years to develop in that role. Hale is a couple of years younger but his consistency is extremely poor and I think he has a lot of work to do.

Tarrant is only 20 and not expected to hit peak for another 4 or so years, he has time to develop before hitting his prime.

Hale's leading was 100% better than last week. In the second half we moved the ball more indirect and they pushed back numbers and he has less room to lead to. His kicking was a real let down, his run up looks totally different to what it used to be and not really sure why it changed, he used to be a pretty reliable kick.

If he can take the good from his leading work and combine it with his old kicking for goal he has promise, but he really needs to show over the next two months that he can keep getting improving and play consistently. Anyone who is the main target should be kicking 3-4 goals a game on average, preferrably not with with severe fluctuations. For a guy of his reach if he leads hard it should be almost impossible for someone to legally spoil him.
