But not only that it seems they have been training around that rule to exploit it.
Yes I know what most of you will be saying/thinking "Hah this coming from a head-ducking cheat supporter" but this is different.
Davey risks snapping his legs by intentionally putting himself in this position just to draw a cheap free and also they actually factor it into training as admitted by Davey.

I wonder how long it will be until someone sustains a broken leg in an avoidable incident in the hope of getting a free?

I hope the AFL rules committee read that article about players exploiting their rules, that's if they can on that pile of shit AFL website which crashes every 5 seconds.

They probably won't scrap the sliding below the knees rule though, they'll just bring in some stupid new rule like penalising players for planting their feet.

I dont think he risked snapping his legs or anything - he was just standing there. Sure, he over-emphasised the contact, but by the new rule, it was a free. The thing that was kind of funny was the umpires reaction - he almost apologised after paying the free against Reilly. I wonder how that looked to the rules committee.

Of course players are going to milk it. They always do. Like, remember when 'the head was sacrosanct'. No one really cared about players ducking before then because it wasnt contentious until players started exploiting the rule.

I'm most interested to see what rule change they bring in to combat players deliberately putting their legs in the way. Thats the way it goes isnt it? When will the AFL learn that players arent idiots - you make a stupid rule, we'll exploit it. They dont care if they look stupid doing it if they win the free kick.

I actually hope this rule costs someone 4 points early. I want rules commitee hacks defending it each week, purely for the laughs.

So what, the other guy broke the rules?

It's like saying pushing back into a guy to draw a hands in the back is 'playing for a free'.

It's a free or it's not a free.

Playing for a free is simulating a free kick when there is none there - IE throwing the head back when not touched on the head.

As I said the other day in the umpires board topic on this, sooner or later, players will break their own legs through their own stupidity on this rule but it doesn't surprise me no it should anyone else that clubs and players have found ways around the rule already

What? ...

We had Essendon guys come onto our board defending that particular free. It was a bullshit call and its bad for the sport.

Rewarding players who are second to the ball is bullshit.

Rewarding players free's for incidental contact is bullshit.

Encouraging players to play for free's is bullshit.

I'm guess I'm okay with the AFL trying to reduce injuries from sliding (I didn't realise it was a big issue) but they need to implement a better rule then the current one, which is giant steaming turd.

You're assuming the rules committee actual watch games...

There are three rules already in place that should have been enough to prevent dangerous sliding. Between kicking in danger, tripping, and the general "rough play", and a little bit of direction from the director of umpires re interpretation, dangerous slides coud have been legislated against without ridiculous rule changes.

The free was there according to the rule, he just stood there waiting for the contact and Reilly obliged. Its a stupid thing to do considering the type of injury he could get but when the result is a almost certain goal, he wont be the last player to do it.

Just goes to show how stupid the rules committee is, introduced no head high contact rule, players start charging in with their heads risking the very thing the afl wanted to protect, now they have introduced this below the knee rule afl players will exploit it as well. Take into account the extremely small amount of such incidents causing injuries it was beyond stupid to bring the rule in.

They were probably defending it because the free kick was there. The new rule may be complete bullshit which the large majority agree that it is but the umpire made the correct call.

I don't expect them to argue against their own free kick but that has nothing to do with the real issue here. The fact that certain supporters would defend this rule simply because it happened to be convenient for their team is pathetic. Talk about being short sighted. Its only a matter of time before the bombers cop one of these bullshit free's then we'll see if they still have people defending the sliding rule.

Another policy that the afl does not enforce another policy that players know that is neglected so they think if he can do it so can I.

Umpiring would be much better if players actually got punished for abusing the game

Bomber Thompson has always been the master of coaching his pupils in how to influence umpires and win free kicks. Look at the stats from his time at Geelong. Ever since he left that club and Chris Scott took over, their number of free kicks has dwindled.

The funny thing about Davey's free kick (and the new rule) is that the ball came his way because an Essendon player valiantly smothered a Crows kick, but in so doing, he dived across the Adelaide player's legs. I thought this action had far more potential to cause injury than what happened with Davey.

It seems inconsistent to me. Dive on a loose ball to win possession, make inadvertent contact with another player's legs and it's a free kick. Dive on the ball to smother a kick and make even more forceful contact with their legs and it's called play on.

Hmmmm

I watched Ashton Hams get around last Saturday, mother of god.

Yep, yep you did.
So did I.
Very embarrassing :(
I was actually talking about the latest rule change/addition and the dangers incurred by playing it up for a free, but hey you keep flogging that dead horse.
