Question is where will hawthorn Fremantle Sydney's improvement come from to compete with the Geelong youth that will improve? We were 5 points away from the premiers with several key players out against their fit side. We have Guthrie who will improve, vardy will improve, Christensen will improve, Duncan will improve, motlop may well go the next level, thurlow will probably make best 22, Simpson mcintosh if we get them fit. We have stacks of improvement, hawthorn don't have any to come and either do Fremantle, just look at the names of their youth and where all their performing players come from

Sydney had a huge amount of injuries and their young players are just as good as ours.

I'd say Geelong and Sydney are in a pretty similar position, having to manage a transition in eras.

Surely Melbourne would not give up pick 2 for Walker.

Agreed. Despite Franklin's contemptible press conference ('I want a completely fresh challenge, but I want it to be at a club which is already a premiership contender without me'), he has a point. The Swans are in good shape for the foreseeable future. Alex Johnson didn't play at all last year. Gary Rohan is just starting to find his feet again. Lewis Jetta had a bit of a hangover year and was then hit by injury; it's hard to envisage him having as bad a year as he did in 2013. After years of incredible durability, Adam Goodes appears to be finally breaking down, but he'd still be a walk-up start in any club's best 22 and could be a phenomenal weapon as a designated sub. Mike Pyke is an AA-contender and looks ready to play 80% of the game in the ruck, with Tippett providing a quick break for him there (though they could use another cheapish ruckman). Josh Kennedy, Dan Hannebery and Kieran Jack are all still in their mid-20s or younger. And Luke Parker (turns 21 in two weeks) and Tom Mitchell (21 in May next year), quite frankly, are at least as exciting as any of our young midfielders...both look like future AAs.

Kennedy, Hannebery, Jack, Parker, Mitchell, Bird and one or two of their emerging mids (Biggs, B.Jack) pumping it in to Franklin and Tippett for the next six or so years looks pretty scary.

Sydney's young players are just as good as ours? What on earth are you smoking

Totally agree with the above. I love our group of youngins, but I think people on here are naïve if they think Sydney (and certain other teams, eg Hawks via their VFL team) don't have some real talent coming through.
Plus, we've been going on about getting "improvement" from a number of players since the 11 GF. for example, didn't Duncan proclaim himself this year to be aiming to replicate Dayne Beams? Who knows if any of them will take that next step up next year. And injuries may cruel any such attempt.

he said he wanted to improve like beams did and guess what? he did!
i dont see what the problem is. and for a man who gets whipped all the time he got helleva lot of brownlow votes.

Beams went from a talented player to a ball winning machine who won the pies b&f..... fair to say Duncan didn't improve like Beams this year..

After reading the post from MC Extra Dollop I will revise that and say they are better than ours.

I am putting Franklin to one side because that deal brings as many negatives as positives. I would say Sydney are in a slightly better list position than us because they have more key players in their football prime. That could change pretty quickly, especially if Hawkins gets fit again.

Name for me these hawthorn future A graders? They had one of the oldest most senior best 22 in the AFL this year.

Hallahan? How much has he shown at AFL? Don't even know if he is good enough, Anderson? Jury still well and truly out. Grimley?? Just remember how easy it is for a lot of these guys to come in as 18-22 and play a part in a top
Side (aka Shannon Byrnes 07-11) and look good. I don't see anything in that hawthorn youth system that you could call a future A grader.

Sydney do have some talented youth coming through, but hawthorn really don't have anything.

thats not the point. duncan said he wanted to improve like Beams did. which he did, he didn't say he wanted to be as good as beams.

Not the way I read it and I would suggest most others here took it how I did... i took it as him wanting to have a break out year... which he didn't..

Duncan stagnated more than improved.. his disposal dropped right off and he still went missing in games

I agree that Duncan didn't have the break out year we all hoped he would in 2013. I still recall Dermie talking him up early in the season. Still has the potential though and maybe next season he might finally establish himself as one of the better midfielders in the comp. Lot's of upside in the kid. Don't give up on him yet, everyone develops at different speeds.

Even at 'ordinary' Duncan is a well worth while player. I've reached the conclusion in the past week that a lot of Cats fans are spoiled rotten. They expect a 20 year old to be like Selwood was and a 22 year old to be like Bartel was. These young guys like Duncs, Bundy, GHS, Mots, Smedts etc still comprise the best young mid-field/ small forward group in the league. Only Collingwood's young group goes close IMO. A few teams like Sydney are heading for big problems - belatedly starting to bring a few through this year - in that area compared to us, but our fans have still been criticising the young'ns

Duncs has just been slightly missing passes this year, but he'll be OK once it gels

Potentially that's where I am getting mucked up... either way if they are getting another 1st round pick (and the other rumour is armatige for Longer so not a pick) it would be 4 picks in the top 21... still a fair base to go from

i am not sure if i processed it correctly, but mark stevens on c7 news seemed to imply that savage/hawks buddy pick to the saints and mcevoy/p23 (???) going back to the hawks.

if true, ken bruce has gone completely mad. is there some wiggins type talent that the saints are aiming for in the 2015 draft?

Hallahan, Anderson, Grimley and co aren't Hawthorn's equivalent of Duncan, Christensen and Motlop. That group is their equivalent of Horlin-Smith, Thurlow, Smedts and the rest of our fringe youngsters who have yet to break in to our best 22.

If you want to name-check Duncan, Christensen, Guthrie and Vardy as examples of potential upside for Geelong next season - as you did in an earlier post - than you have to mention Brad Hill, Jack Gunston, Luke Bruest and Cyril Rioli.

Bruest and Rioli are 23 and 24 respectively. They need to be compared with Selwood and Varcoe, not our young brigade. I personally think Varcoe and Rioli aren't that far apart - both have huge potential but haven't really delivered. Not sure how old Bundy is - but I don't put him in the babies group

I think Saints will end up getting Savage, 17 and Hawks' compo for Buddy (18?) in exchange for McEvoy and 21.

thank makes a lil more sense then, its just franco cozzo mad now...stevens was guessing that the buddy pick could be 20 but i am guessing he has as much idea as us.

Um rioli will be 25 next season. You want to add selwood and Hawkins in there as well? He clearly isn't youth anymore, his in the prime of his career

So they have brad hill Gunston and Luke bruest. Then after that you have Anderson and pretty much nothing I'd really want or rate

If you think gunston breust hill Anderson hallahan grimley are as good or on par with vardy horlin smith Duncan caddy Guthrie Christensen kersten smedts thurlow then you need to re think

I know it's all hawthorn are the top shelf to look up at right now, but their premiership was 0% due to anything youth dons there, in a year or so when Father Time creeps up on the likes of hodge Mitchell Burgoyne hale lake, they are going to be in a lot of trouble
