Yeah I think every small forward gets a certain amount of them, it's often clever play that allows them to slip past their man and get out the back. I can't think of any small forwards who I'd say don't benefit from a bunch of cheapies.

Back in about 2007, Richmond were so sh!t we signed Kent Kingsley from Geelong. Anyway, the reserves were on the ABC one afternoon and I watched. Kingsley kicked 5. The thing was - Richmond had this skinny kid playing around half-forward/forward pocket called Jack Riewoldt and Riewoldt basically gave Kingsley at least 4 of those goals on a platter - chips over the top, handballs into the clear etc. Bloody smart player. Kingsley just waited in the goalsquare.

So next week, Richmond promoted Kingsley into the seniors.

So that's why his career went downhill.........he used to be Geelongs number one forward for a few years, thought he was solid on the lead.

Jake Stringer and Jarrad Grant are probably the best at it for us currently, moreso Stringer.

Anyone notice that good teams regularly kick these sorts of "easy" goals, they normally come from good, fast, clean forward 50 entry, so while it's cheap for the player to finish it off and annoy a few from the opposition, they're generally a sign of good teamwork/play in the first place.

About 30-35 of Josh Jenkins' 40 goals last year were Joe the Goose goals. He cops a heap of criticism for this on our board, because he's kicking cheapies rather than crashing packs or applying forward pressure. Luckily his last few games have been a bit better.

Would agree on Nahas, Disagree on Thomas.

Thomas is a brilliant reader of play at the drop of the ball. His "Joe the Gooses" are usually roving a spilled ball off the side of a contest and running into goal.

Goldy loves an over the top goal giving/receiving.


Regarding the term Joe the Goose. Was listening to the radio a couple weeks ago during a game and they were discussing it, apparently it came from a South Australian player who used to get a lot of cheapies out the back named Joe "[The] Goose" Somethingorother.

The club they said he played for tweeted out claiming it as correct.

Kingsley was a decent player.

Not perfect but you don't kick 26 bags of 4+ goals from 126 games in a mediocre team without being handy.

There is one person, and one person only that owns this thread.

That is the great Anthony Rocca.

There was a season there where he kicked about 50 goals or something (late in his career) when I reckon 75% of them were from the goal square.

Currently it seems Josh Jenkins is the new Rocca. He gets gifts from Eddie Betts every week.

I think there is a difference between getting out the back and outrunning your opponent back to the square as opposed to simply standing in the goal square and getting a cheap one over the top

For a fair while Richo was the king. He'd call for the ball and then would duck out of the marking contest in the hope that his teammates could win the footy and pop it over the top to him.The end of his career was great, but god he played selfishly there for a fair few years.

If getting one in your career to date is the determining factor then yes Tom Boyd is the undisputed King of the Goose!

Never mind the four free kicks that have been paid to Boyd that Jake Stringer has played on from and kicked goals over the back from 1m out. Incidently Stringer is my nomination.

The majority of his goals for his rising star nomination were Joe the Geese.
