I just love it how West Coast celebrate every home win like they've won the Grand Final when they've probably beaten all the teams that'll feature somewhere in the bottom six this year....but to each their own..

The majority of Richmond fans are rather modest, but having been the butt of jokes for years because of our constant failures, you can't blame them for having a bit of a crack when a little bit of success comes along. I'd suggest that reaction is where most of the perceived arrogance comes from. This year Richmond fans have for the most part kept a lid on things and it has been the media that has started the can Richmond win the flag chatter.

Personally I am happy that Richmond are playing a much better brand of footy and are starting to win games that in previous years they would have given away without a whimper. The next month where we play Adelaide Bulldogs Fremantle & GWS (3 of them away games) will give a much better understanding of where we stand. Break even with a 2-2 result and we set ourselves up for a good second half.

I actually admire the way Richmond supporters have stuck by their team.
Given their lack of recent success to have the membership they have is amazing.

Also I don't think Richmond is hated by the general AFL populace, more by supporters from their traditional rivals.

However I also think their is some amusement/bemusement at the emotional highs/lows expressed by Richmond fans and their equilibrium swings are probably only threatened by North Melb supporters (or at least those NM posters on BF).

In the time I have genuinely followed footy Richmond have been poor, but other older bulldog supporters shudder when talking about Richmond and their arrogance.

We lost to them once, I think in 2011, and it seemed every Richmond Troll came on to our board (and there is a lot of them). It was the season for infractions.

What brings me additional joy this year is the salty crocodile tears from oppo fans, especially supporters from the other Big 4 clubs. Just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and makes me giddy.

Not only do I want my club to succeed, at the same time I wish supporters of the other big 4 clubs great suffering, desolation, sickness, ill-treatment, indignities. I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, the wretchedness of the vanquished.

This is why the Essendon saga, the Malthouse2Buckley transition, and then Malthouse totally decimating Carlton - who lets face it are perennially shit...well if a genie popped out of a bottle and granted me 3 wishes, I could not have even come up with that lot.

Since joying Bigfooty, I have developed a profound loathing of North Melbourne. Their misery this year nourishes my soul and enriches my life-experience.

Anyhoo, back on topic, no idea where all this Tiger hate stems from.

This is an interesting thread and I think there are many factors as to why Richmond, from your point of view, is "hated"

For a long time now Richmond has been a sleeping giant of the AFL, with the best song in the league, passionate fans and a truck load of them they have been yurning for success but it has not come consistently enough for the rest of the AFL (Media, fans etc.) to take them seriously.

I mean look back on the last 20 years and you had Northey walk away because the club wouldn't extend his contract, Then Walls, then Gieschen for a couple years and Frawley who took you to a prelim but probably sold the future for the present and over estimated the squad which in turn shot him and the club in the foot.

Now to go with the poor coaching and squad management through trades you had some pretty lean drafting through those years too with Fiora over Pavlich, Tambling/Deledio over Roughead/Franklin as two glaring examples which really just helped make the Richmond Football club a laughing stock of the AFL.

Then comes Terry Wallace and his 5 year plan... well we all know how that worked out Rawlings took over until the end of the season.

Enter Damian Hardwick and in all honesty I think most people saw this as a huge step in the right direction, tough player in his day and we all thought Richmond are going to play some hard tough football and it might not happen the next season but it will slowly build and since 2010 the club and culture has certainly improved, that's pretty obvious to see.

So Richmond with a new coach and changing culture in 2010 finish 15th, 2011 12th, 2012 12th again and people are thinking have they really changed?

2013 saw Richmond start to play some good football winning their first three games and the hype grew, 3-0 tigers looking to play finals for the first time in years(2001 to be exact) and the fans had something to rave about. Skip to the end of the reason and Richmond finish with 15 wins (great year) and play Carlton at the MCG . Richmond were 32 points up and Carlton faught back and won. For all the hype and finishing 5th Richmond couldn't get the job done.

2014 Richmond had a very inconsistent year and managed to scrape into the finals in 8th position to then face a rampaging Port Adelaide at AO who pretty much finished the game in the first quarter. So two years in a row and a team which many, fans and media alike, thought should be pushing for top 4 after a great improvement the year before failed to live up to their lofty heights.

So comes 2015 which saw Richmond have a slow start but finish the season strong to once again play finals with their finishing position of 5th. Richmond again had a good start to the game before North overran them to win the final.

2016 is surely the year Richmond will make the top 4 right? They've played finals for the last 3 years, gained valuable experience. Hardwick their longest serving coach since Tom Hafey has to get this team to perform and what happens, they finish 12th.

You know since the AFL became the AFL only 3 teams haven't played in a Grand Final. Gold Coast, Greater Western Sydney and you guessed it Richmond.

Almost 30 years and not a single grand final appearance. I guess this long winded reply is to say hate is probably a strong word but for a lot of neutral fans it comes down to "We'll believe when we see it" and until Richmond can consistently perform on the pitch during the H&A season and finals (0-3 under Hardwick) we just see Richmond fans getting excited and think "yeah ****ing whatever mate, you aint done shit yet"

Just look at Fremantle, it took us years to build our reputation back up and we did it through consistent good football over a number of years including prelim finals, grand finals and minor premierships. Now we didn't win the big one but we've certainly moved away from the culture and improved our league reputation immensely.

Do that Richmond and the football public will respect you, it's not about the fans who are passionate its about the football club who continually under performs.

Supporters of other clubs like to have a team they know will fail, ninthdom.
It makes them feel better about their own clubs downfall and/ or (human nature) something to ridicule.
Richmond try hard but recently 20 odd years just have not managed to take that next step so it has put you as "that team".
Your supporters are no worse than any others.
In fact the way other teams supporters of clubs that have suddenly found some form, behave is more annoying than anything Richmond supporters do. Like a little lap dog who suddenly has a front fence to bark at everything walking by. Not looking at any upcoming Vic teams...

hahaha hilarious - if your team is a 'big 4 club' and yet has had less success than any other team since the formation of the AFL, are you really still a big 4 club??

I'd rather support the smallest-market club in the comp and experience some success than to be one of thousands and thousands of supporters who have experienced nothing but misery and frustration.

Sorry I was just trying to get the back story because not all here might know it but it also helps explain the cultural issues behind the scenes that Richmond have had for a long time and only in the last 5 or so years has it began to change around (off field that is).

And look I'm not trying to have a go, I mean I support Fremantle and we've had our own issues with the same thing over the years so I can sympathise with you

Never bothered the scorer GF day in the national comp, so any hate goes back a long, long, long way & would be limited to VFL followers, non event outside Vic.

Im surprised you didnt note similar traits in your own supporters over the summer, finals certainties, flag bound etc.

We're not talking about respect here, we're talking hate. As evidenced in a post early in the gameday thread, where a neutral urged Melbourne to win "for everyone watching".

I don't think it's a shared hallucination among Richmond supporters that plenty of neutrals are willing us to fail, no matter who we play.
