I dont think you need to be a captain to be named the AA captain as a rule. Otherwise the AA captain is always going to be best captain that made the AA team.

If we subscribe to the fact that you dont need to be a captain or vice captain to be a leader amongst your peers then I have no issue with a non-club captain being named.

It has clearly changed where it is now a ceremonial way to bestow an added honour to an AA player.

Despite it being an honourary team, the selection of captain should be a considered choice of who would provide the best on-field leadership. Not a pull-a-name-from-the-hat exercise or a lifetime recognition of numeorous AA jackets.

Otherwise, what's the point of selecting a team rather than just a list of good players? Next we'll start naming players grossly out of posit ... oh wait

Hurn seemed the obvious choice but I got no issue with it being Buddy.
Clarkson has never won coach of the year yet even with 4 flags to his name.
The AFL do things in very funny ways and have done for a long time. They go out of their way to make things complicated that are not complicated to try and sell to the public their job is a difficult one.
