Two extra players under 25.

We’ve gone from 10 players to 15 under 21 because we hit the draft this off season. Nothing we can do about that.

It’s not a rebuild. It’s just a build.

Five extra players under 21 is a lot. We hit the draft every year.

We have a lot of old guys and a lot of young. Call what you like but there is an imbalance in our list profile.

Call it what you want but the 14 era list is basically gone
It was a long time ago but Boak, Ebert, Wines, Hartlett, R.Gray, Westhoff, Jonas, Broadbent are all that are left.
Carlile, Schulz, Cornes, Monfries, White have retired
Polec, Pittard, Lobbe, O'Shea, Wingard, Hombsch, Trengove, Moore and Neade have either been traded or delisted

We didn’t hit it in 2017. Hence why there was a big fat 0 next to the 18 year olds for 2018.

We aren’t doing a common list build. That’s how Carlton is doing it, and that’s how Melbourne did theirs. Free agency has changed the game with that - now it’s about maximising value with your salary cap...it’s going to more of an NFL model where you draft kids in the first round to help your team and get games into them so their actual value is higher than their contract value, while at the same time trading for players that improve the list with the resultant savings.

The old model is gone.

We drafted 5 people in 2017

2017:
Draft: 5 (4 remain)
Rookie: 1 (0 remain)

2018:
Draft: 5
Rookie: 2 (1 re-rookie)

Didn't hit the draft in 2017? K.

Build? Rebuild? Squabbling over semantics.

The important part is that we've had massive list turnover, in the last couple of seasons especially, and our team is now very different to the one that Hinkley started with in terms of both players and age profile.

Hinkley couldn't deliver with the old (and capable) list but gets a second life with the new list thanks to his extension.

Time to shit or get off the toilet.

Hinkley and our club in general can't handle high expectations, never thought I would say that about this club of ours but its been obvious for years. He's setting up the 'we played the kids' excuse to justify another failed season. Hope I'm wrong.

I was going by your list, where you said we had 0 18 year olds on our list in 2018. Guess I shouldn’t trust someone who obviously has an agenda.

We brought in Hayes, Farrell, Garner and Patmore. We also gave Dom Barry a crack for a year. So I’ll ask again - what is the difference between this year and last year? Bearing in mind we brought in Lycett and Mayes who are in their mid 20s to replace the age profile of Wingard and Polec.

The only difference is that we didn’t hit free agency this year. But last time I checked, Rockliff, Watts, Motlop, Trengove and McKenzie were still on our list.

We’ve been turning over our list for awhile. Of the 22 to play against Melbourne: Byrne-Jones and Amon were recruited back in 2013. Burton, Bonner and Houston were in 2015. Marshall, Powell-Pepper and Drew were in 2016. Rozee, Butters and Duursma hail from 2018.

Sorry, but players who have had three preseasons and have already debuted aren’t what I would call rookie players anymore.

An issue i worry about is that common consensus is that the majority of successful teams have had a core group of players who have played together for years. Having 6 players this weekend having their first game for the club along with the massive list turnover in recent years doesn't help us in that area.

Will be interesting to see how everyone jells together.

There’s going to be goal line technology at MCG

Anyone keen for a bigfooty half time piss up somewhere?

Seems like quite a few are coming over for this one :D

Pudney and Fredrick are rookies too. So it's actually 4 rookies.

2016:
Draft: 2 (2 remain)
Rookie: 2 (2 remain (1 elevated, 1 re-rookied))

So in the space of three years, we've cycled through 15 players in the draft.

My point isn't that we aren't rejuvenating our list. My point is that it's been happening for three years. These are the players that Hinkley has brought in since he's been at the club that are still on our list going into R1, 2019:

39 players in 7 years. This is why he got another deal...because he didn't have the requisite depth to challenge for a flag with the list he was given. He does now, so there is no more excuses. It's not rebuild time...it's time to challenge for a flag in the next three years, starting with this year.

I disagree with your statement here, but note that you feel anxious about us not having stability within our group. I think that successful groups have often had a relatively stable defensive group throughout the year who develop good chemistry so that they are able to work well together through a finals series. But I don't think that this is necessarily a requirement across the team over several years in order to produce success.

Lastly, I think our list turnover has been not very different to other teams. Over the last 3 years, we've delisted, traded or retired 28 different players. That's pretty much middle of the pack in terms of turnover (median is 28, range is between 24 and 40).

We had the same number of players delisted or traded out from our club as West Coast did at the end of 2017. Yes, we have 11 players different vs Round 23 last year, but West Coast had 8 players different in Round 1 from their loss to GWS in the finals the year before. West Coast also had 3 debutants playing their first AFL game in Round 1. I think if most clubs looked back at their teams from 3 years ago, they would see a huge amount of turnover... and if I had time I would be semi-interested to see that, but that's a lot of work!
