Vader - you'll know better than most, was there some issue about not matching and then finding out you got crappy compensation? as in we have to choose to match or not before we find out compo? i seem to remember that being a problem with selwood going from wce to cats?

Yes, AFL only announce the compensation AFTER everything else is done and dusted. So we'd have lost our opportunity to match by that point.

Also despite what some people will claim the free agency formula is NOT known by the clubs or the media or out in public. We have rough ideas based on previous contracts but nothing 100% accurate.

Not directly. We could agree to trade for one of their lesser players, freeing up space in their salary cap, thereby allowing them to increase their offer.

Saints can clear some salary if they need to (I dont think they need to). I don't think we would be involved though.

List numbers are going to be tight, we don't have the list spot to take on a Saints clogger, doesn't mean they can't trade with another club.

Will be interesting what we do with picks 1 and 2.
Hollands and Thilthorpe/McDonald.
Reckon it will be McDonald.

Then somehow get O'Driscoll with Dogs first rounder.
Upgrade our GWS pick to get Thilthorpe?

Pick 1 and 2.

Lock in McDonald and Hollands.

Start planning on what to do with Pick 8.

We wont get TT with Dons and Roos desperate for a key forward.

So that rules out a trade then if you won’t be matching?
If St Kilda make an official offer, which Brad accepts, and Adelaide chooses not to match, then that's it - he departs via FA and there is no trade.

There are two ways in which this could turn into a trade:
  • Adelaide matches St Kilda's offer, and Brad still decides that he wants to leave.
  • St Kilda choose to trade, rather than make an official FA offer (e.g. Dangerfield trade to Geelong).

Injuries have stopped him being a Brownlow medalist. I still firmly believe that.

Even 'Fully Fit' now he'll never have the physical ability he looked to have when younger.
A consistent year for Brad in a Victorian side should surely get him up into Brownlow contention.

Absolutely could - however, I feel that's bordering on draft tampering. Genuine question - has any club successfully done this?
I'm not sure how they could ping us for draft tampering, provided the side trade is seen as fair and we don't leave any ****ing paper trail for them to follow and use as evidence against us.

I'm not aware of anyone going down this path.

St Kilda are the red headed stepchild of Victoria.

If he was at Collingwood or Geelong or the Tigers you might have a point, but I doubt he'll get too much extra attention at St Kilda.

Yes that’s true. But both those trade scenarios rely on Adelaide being willing to pay brad what the saints have offered. Which may or may not be the case.

FWIW guys I think we will get you your pick 2 and there will be a token trade of something like a second or 3rd coming back for someone like a Luke Dunstan.

If we finished first this year we'd be complaining that the band 1 compensation isn't enough (pick 20-26) and no one would be even questioning if he was band 1 or not. Band 2 would be a pick in the 40s which isn't realistic. Luckily Adelaides finishing position has no impact on determining band status.
If we'd finished 1st, Band 2 would be the same as Band 1. Not in the 40s

I'm fairly sure they're happy to match anything which doesn't net us the Band 1 compensation pick. $$$ certainly wouldn't be an issue - contract length could, however, be a sticking point.

Compensation picks aren't announced until after the final paperwork is lodged. We won't know what compensation we'll receive until it's too late to do anything about it.

This is the VFL, i refuse to believe there's not a wink and a nudge to some teams, i think Qanon is involved
