Player Watch #50 Marlion Pickett

It just occured to me that Marlion has more premierships than Alex Rance

May be generally unnoticed but his positioning was excellent, and he held it rather than kick chase.
Watch the replay and check the edges of vision, he's always holding that outside position so that if they get it there's no ground opening across the middle.
Then late he was always on the def side of stoppage inside their 50 for the exit handball which he cleared with a long ball to a contest.
Turned it over a bit early, by hand that we always saw and once by foot when there was nothing ahead.
Overall a very good game. Played his role but tackled, chased down, smothered etc very well.
Big tick from me.

Rance would've the same except he quit.

loved his game saturday night, was very solid when the heat was on early.

genuinely shocked (but glad) he is staying with us for 2 more years.

I thought for sure he was heading back to WA given what his family have been through this year.

Huge respect for him sticking to his word and staying at the club. could have easily gone home for similar / more money and set his family up and I wouldn't have blamed him.
I wonder how much hub life and having his wife and kids immersed within the club and the other families has played a part in him staying.

I’m a big fan of how he plays the game. So very happy to see him retained.

Hes played the Ellis role all year, gone from an out and out midfielder to a wingman.
Of all the games I have seen him this year in QLD he and Macca just run uo and down the wing guarding space.
Great tackles in the granny
*in legend !!

Bought his book on preorder, it comes out 1 Nov. Always interested in a redemption story.

Support him with a book purchase if you can. He will get a decent wage with his new contract but he would have been on below the poverty line cash this year with the 50% cuts to players wages.

Honestly feel that if he doesn't play another game for us then even with his new two year contract it was money well spent. One of the all time great sporting stories to debut in a GF play like he did and then in addition go on and play his role in a second flag.

Pickett's random acts of kindness

They are the random acts of kindness that sum up Marlion Pickett's attitude towards life. Pickett is a dual premiership player after just 20 AFL games, with Saturday night's grand final win for Richmond yet another chapter in his scarcely believable tale of redemption and emergence.
Pickett is unflappable on and off-field, and his generosity of spirit shone through on a couple of occasions in grand final week.

One came when he was out for dinner on the Gold Coast and approached for a selfie by a fan.
"One fella asked for a photo, so we took a photo out there," Pickett said on Monday.

"We started talking and stuff. He's going through a really hard time at the moment about him and his partner having a big fight. He got kicked out of his house. Has two kids. I was talking to him, trying to make him feel a bit better. Just to make sure he was all right and work a way through it. He was a really nice guy to talk to. I don't like leaving people that aren't in the right state of mind by themselves, especially when they're going through a hard time."
Pickett got his new acquaintance's details and plans to keep in touch.

"I messaged him the other day, just before the granny to check if he was all right and stuff like that. I'll probably message him this week just to see how he's going.
"I'm always there for someone if they need talking to. It doesn't matter if I know you or I don't at all."

The other instance came when Pickett was asked by friends if he could help with spare grand final tickets. This is a man with four kids and on a COVID-19-slashed rookie wage, but there was no thought of him asking for recompense.

"Instead of making some extra bucks and making some extra dollars off them, I ended up giving them away," he said.
"The people that were coming from Darwin wanted to pay for them but I don't really like selling things to people, if I'm not using them and I don't need them. It makes me feel better just to give them away.
"One of them is like an old mate. He asked if he could buy them off me and I said ,'Nah, don't worry about it. I'm not using them and I'm not going to trade you for something I never paid for so just take them.'

AFL Grand Final
Pickett a year after his dramatic debut
"I'm not the kind of person to overcharge for tickets that are hard to come by."
Pickett, 28, is set to remain at Richmond for at least another couple of seasons with a new contract imminent.
Having won his second AFL flag on Saturday he has kept things low-key ahead of a return to Western Australia on Wednesday where he will be reunited with his unwell father.
"I know it's a big game and what not but it's just another game. I haven't really been celebrating, I've just been with my family and enjoying time with them. Just probably a bit of family time after a good win. The kids have been struggling a bit. It's time to get them out and about," he said.

"[Dad's] all right. Struggling every now and then but doing the best he can do."
It is only 17 months since Richmond recruited Pickett in the mid-season draft despite a finger injury. Having spent time in prison during his youth, his restorative tale has been part of football legend since his grand final day debut last year.

Yes I will be buying his book too, mainly to support him to make some extra money.
Hopefully a large chunk of Richmond fans will buy it.

Hope he gets a decent pay rise with his new contract too, he deserves it.

Says it all ... so rapt to have this guy at our club!

I mean, sante, he is, he's played in two finals now lol.
Sometimes playing in finals is a matter of luck, there are always going to be some average players in a premiership team. Imagine if he'd been drafted by say fremantle, he'd have played in zero finals by now, or ever probably

Exactly, he's more valuable than some realise, personally I loved his GF game.

He's only had one pre-season, and nothing you could really call a normal season - after his time inside maybe he has a whole different set of expectations, frankly I'm enjoying watching his journey - hope it remains fulfilled!

Got gifted the season review on DVD from Santa so just poring over a few of our wins for the year over the last few days. It’s actually interesting when you know the result and you look a bit more broadly off the ball when viewing.

I’m just so impressed with Marlion and the pressure acts, bumps, taking hits to stop oppos forward momentum and tackles he sticks. It’s just a part of the Richmond jigsaw, but I had no appreciation of his work rate off the ball. And thinking about it - we’ve hardly had the opportunity to see him live in games bar the Granny and some early rounds this year. I suspect when we get that opportunity we’ll respect his second efforts and work rate so much more. I get the feeling the telly doesn’t give him his deserved justice.

And Nanks second efforts another huge highlight - but for another thread...............

I still don’t rate him as much as some. He’s not sh*t but not sure he’s best 22
He’s GENUINE role player , quite similar to Macca , fit as * , runs both ways gets to right spots , applies defensive pressure and tackles and can carry the pill when req , is def best 22 for now , and I still think he has some improvement left in him, let’s not forget he’s played <25g

Yeah I fall into this category. I was pretty dirty on him but he played some great halves in the finals series so I've come around a bit. If I recall correctly second half in the Port game and first half in the grand final were excellent and much much needed.

Great birthday present from my wife - signed copy of Belief by Marlion Pickett.:richmond::hearteyes:

shedda still improved at same age, dont underestimate marlion going up a level , not saying to shedda std but he can make a bigger impact , particularly offensive side of his game

Pickett will still have been picking up the many nuances of AFL systems - I liked his second season - if they were his second year blues can you imagine how good 2021 might be. This is just his second serious AFL pre-season coming up, last season contained Covid and Hublife. I think what we got from him was extraordinay in those circumstances. His body looks to be traveling well so far so he could easily be a five year player (two so far) and so well worth it for all!
