The old rules should still apply if the guy is taking a shot for goal. Supposedly the whole point of the rule was to allow easier inboard kicks from the wing

i'd be uncomfortable too if i had 5 grams of ice in my back pocket

He's got the twitch of someone who is coming off a very long session.

That old coaching thing where players were told to 'man the mark hard' is no longer a thing. Stand perfectly still and do not move a muscle is the new technique.

Taking over from the last stupidest one the AFL introduced.

Soon to be surpassed by the next stupidest rule they introduce next year.

There is only ONE reason the new standing on the mark rule has been put into place together with the push for more GOALS - ADVERTISING REVENUE - more goals means more advertising space for channel 7 to meet advertiser commitments or increase those commitments. Once these commitments are met you notice that they talk through to the bounce.

seems like "the mark" just basically means a spot for the player to kick from. they may as well make "the mark" a temporary dot/line with temporary spray like they do in soccer to mark the wall. then you don't have to waste a player standing there acting as... the "mark". the umpire can spray a dot right where the mark is taken.

Steve Hocking came from Geelong ? Thought that was Gary ? Could have been both I guess.
Wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic or genuinely asking. :)

It is difficult to believe that someone with no idea about Australian Rules Football could not only have been previously involved with an AFL club but has also played almost 200 games.

Was being genuine :) Never herd of the guy before apart from the AFL rules aspect.

The problem is it takes the umpire to call play on.
Surely the actions of the opponent should be sufficient.

With the plethora of umpires on the field, one of them should be watching the player on the mark and another one should line up behind the kicker and call play on as soon as they go off their line or shape to handball. When a player is taking a set shot for goal the stand rule shouldn't be applied at all, otherwise you see the farce of the kicker just waltzing around for a better angle and the defender not being able to do a thing about it.

How have they ever manged before? o_O

The umpires have always had to police the man on the mark and the player taking the kick. Players other than Lance Franklin have been called to play on when they deviate from their line since Moses played fullback for Jerusalem.

Where did this Hocking chap come from, was he from the AFL or another area , does anyone know ?
Played for Geelong before Blight was coaching there but finished up at the same time as Blight, played 199 games, and then 10 years or so after retiring became a full time employee of Geelong, in several different roles and was GM Football operations after Neil Balme left to go back to Collingwood around end of 2013 or 2014.

Younger brother Garry was a better footballer and I reckon would do a better job in this role.

In the end, everyone will get used to the rule and there will be minimal dramas. The big problem with these types of rules comes when they aren't adjudicated with common sense, that Brennan Cox one being a classic example. If stupid s**t like that didn't happen, there would be no problem with the rule.

That and the Daniher one where he runs 4m off his line without being called to play on and gets an extra 10-15m on his kick from 50 as he is no longer needing to kick over the man on the mark.
