Not sure about his time at Freo but, for Essendon, Adam McPhee.

2004 he was a ripper.

Then he peaked.
Then he stayed on the peak.

Couldn't find a higher peak after that.

Still a good solid career.

Rod Blake, Geelong, father of Mark.

In 1980 he was the Brownlow favourite, he finished 3rd from memory. He was gone 3 seasons and 35 games later. John Mossop was emerging at the time so that may have put paid to him. Was serviceable in 1979 then exploded as a 28 year old in 1980. He had been about for a decade but never put numbers together like he did in that 1980 season.

he wasnt fav for the charlie tho,Geoff Raines is famously remembered for being the on the night favourite in 1980 and not polling a vote

Medhurst 2008
Disagree.

Yeah in 2008 Medhurst kicked 50 goals at Collingwood and got all Australian selection.

Paul Medhurst kicked 50 goals in 2003 at freo and helped tje dockers play finals. I think he was freos leading goal kicker that year too

Ben McKinley 2008. 42 goals and our leading goal kicker as a 19 year old. Also our most hopeful young gun.

Gone by 2010 and delisted by North one year later
I remember this bloke well strangely enough.

But Ben McKinley wasnt a one season wonder. He had 2 solod seasons at west coast.

Taken at pick 29 in the 2005 draft. Played one game in his debit year in 2006. Then a few more in 2007.

As you said, kicked 42 goals as a 19 year old in 2008.

Backed it up with a solid season in 2009 with 30 goals and 27 behinds in 18 games.

Then kick 16 goals from 15 behinds in 2010. He then walked out of the eagles and went to North Melbourne.

Saying that, he looked built. I Thought he was a 192-194 cm kpf but only stood at 185 cm.

Not so much a wonder compared to previous names, but Aaron Black still comes to mind.

Had a breakout year kicking 33 goals from 18 games as a 23 year old in 2013 and then really struggled afterwards. Barely played in 2015, played vfl all year in 2016 and was let go to Geelong. Showed some decent form as a defender, but injuries and form got him delisted in 2018 by the cats.

Not sure you could classify Jakovich as a one year wonder.
Certainly one of the most gifted footballers ever.
Some fun facts re Jako.

He only played 47 games for Melbourne and averaged 4.27 goals per game (201).

In those 47 games he kicked 6 goals or more 16 times.

12 times he kicked 7 or more.

And 9 times he kicked 8 or more.

I think his most important statistic is his 12 goals in 2 finals played.
The guy was a prodigy.

That was part of the problem.
He was too built to be a small forward, not big enough to be a KPF.
Was stuck in between. And with Kennedy, Lynch, Lecras all thereabouts at the time...

Schwartz went as far to say he was as talented as G.Ablett Snr just recently, the league seriously missed out with him not sticking around.
Injury not only robbed AJ of a career but us fans..... That dude was next level talent and so much fun to watch!!!

i guess adrian mcadam is the default answer for lots of people who remember footy early-mid 90's

as a 22 yo brent heaver kicked 48 for the year alongside kernahan in '93 as a forward/rover. didn't get half as close to that before his career faded after a couple of seasons at port, done with afl by 27.

IIRC Heaver did hurt his knee badly whilst he was still at Carlton.

Eons ago now but Paul Prymke stands out from 1994, he moved over from Woodville-West Torrens the previous year, having won a flag there, and had a stunning debut season at CHB for us, then finished 3rd in the B+F the following year. Then only played 4 more games before retiring with a back injury aged 26

Buddy's 2008 season reputation has increased a lot with history lol. At the time Gary Ablett Jr was considered the best player in the league by a long way.

Looking back with the decrease in goalkicking in the modern era it looks a big outlier, but at the time he wasn't viewed as being near Ablett's level.

Fevola also kicked 99 all while Roughead, Brayshaw, Brown all kicked above 70 goals for the season and Pav kicked 67 from 19 games. It was a very high scoring season for goal kickers. Outside of Lyon and Roos at that stage every team was aiming to kick goals with less of a focus on flooding, zoning hadn't really hit and the inside 50 pressure styles hadn't coming in yet. It was an outlying year.

2008, in many ways, was two thousand and great.

Such an awesome year.

Andrew Willsā€™ 1997 season was amazing, especially the first half where he polled 15 Brownlow votes from the first 12 games (3 votes was his next best in a season). 19 touches and nearly a goal a game, he had never had more than 12 a game before then. He went from a flaky half forward to gun winger but sadly it only lasted a season.

Rubbish, there's a reason the club chased him for years, more skill than jnr, just not that interested, he was always reluctant.
Iā€™ve seen this said quite a few times on Bigfooty and Iā€™m certain itā€™s a myth.

Gary junior is arguably the best footballer of the past two decades, renowned for his ridiculous skill level in a number of areas.

My recollection of Nathan is he was a talented but not precocious footballer who had the benefit of being the 3rd or 4th best forward in a really strong Geelong team.

His valuation as a footballer seems to strangely go up the longer time passes.

Footy IQ and skill level elite.

Interest / application zero.

Adrian McAdam - North Melbourne. His season 93 was unreal (well start to it) he was up there in the goalkicking with Modra, Ablett, Dunstall and co.
After 1993 he fell off the face of the earth. one season wonder..
