I’ve started mixing Ayahuasca into my morning prune juice.

The room is spinning but my digestive tract is flying.

Been said many times but why on earth would Saints give up pick 13 for Shiel?? Not happening.

Because they don’t have pick 13 at all unless we help them. It doesn’t exist unless we deliberately overpay Gresham to create Pick 13.

I don’t think the Shiel/Gresham/pick stuff is really up to us.

It’s up to St Kilda to simply determine what’d they’d prefer.

The pick that Gresham will genuinely garner, be in band 2 or 3?
Or
What is being floated, which is Shiel (and whatever % of his contract) and some sort of pick. Be it 13 coming to us with 27-28 going back, or some different version.

You could make a perfectly valid argument either way for them what they’d prefer, and either is acceptable/logical. But it’s probably up to them to decide what they want.

James Jordon has picked Sydney.

No room for him.

People are aware the default setting in the AFL isn't actually 'we want to come to Essendon except Essendon ****ed it up' right?

Players can actually choose to go elsewhere.

When choosing between a club that manages to regularly appear in GFs, or one that hasn't won a final in ~ 20 years, who would you choose?

They don't have pick 13...They only receive this pick if we horrendously over pay Gresham, which activates pick 13.

So many people are struggling to understand what is being floated.

Saints have to decide whether band 3 compensation for Gresham is enough or Shiel for Gresham is preferred. If the later, then they depart with pick 13 for Shiel, which they only receive if we over pay JGresham.

We overpay for Gresham they give us that pick. We pay a lot of shiels salary next year and they get him for free.
It’s either Gresham for a 3rd round pick
Or Gresham for shiel

It’s Homer and the Movementarians all over again.

‘Yes and how much is this free, AFL standard running machine with premiership experience?’

‘He’s free!’

But there is no obligation for the Saints to cough up that generated pick 13.
Meaning Saints could sneakily say 'trust us, we're very very likely to send back pick 13 from the Gresham trade', but then later say they won't.

Until there is a mechanism that guarantees Essendon getting that pick, it's all a remote chance and speculation.
Better to have the trades for Gresham and Shiel done separately, soon and with near enough equated capital.

Fox footy article this morning still has the Shiel/Gresham/Compo deal alive.

Just don't tell them over on the Saints board, they already have Pick 13 spent on other things, it's THEIR pick as far as they see it.FMD, they have real trouble understanding what the fk is actually going on. Weird.

I've started mixing fireball with creaming soda and it tastes like a jam donut and my life will never be the same...

Isn't that a different argument?

Watching Melbourne play this finals series the one thing evident is they have a tonne of mid/utility size guys who keep running/closing down space. A lot of them mark too. In comparison to our tiny mids their mids are straight onto the oppositions when they are trying to clear the ball. We need to pick guys like Jordon who were squeezed from a team that is loaded with these types so that we can finally get an AFL standard team capable of the style of football that is played toward the back end of the season.

Can someone PLEASE explain it to the Saints supporters, they're tying themselves in knots over there.

It’s either Gresham for a 3rd round pick
Or Gresham for shiel
And every Saint will say we either match the 3rd round pick for Gresh and keep him/trade him. Nobody wants Shiel, he's a broken down hack. You don't want him, we don't want him.

If the Saints are making list management decisions based on what their bigfooty posters say they're more screwed then you posting shit in here. :)

You ain’t going to match any deal for Gresham. You don’t want him 😂

And it’s clear that the list management team at st Kilda want shiel, so maybe take it up with them :)

This Shiel/Gresham/Compo situation will probably drag on for another few weeks. Dodoro and Lyon love wheeling and dealing and playing mind games. Not convinced StK actually want Shiel either.
A fit shiel is exactly what they need though, someone with burst speed out of stoppage. They don’t need tough nuts or areobic runners.

He's the definitely the right type, but it's also a question of fitness.

If we were having this discussion a year ago then Saints would be mad not take him. I think Champion data had Shiel as our #1 ranked midfielder in the second half of the 2022 season.

Not top end picks, why is this so hard to understand? :straining::straining:

There is a mechanism that guarantees these things go through.

The AFL have a system where they are required to tell clubs what type of compo pick a FA offer will get as part of the cap.

So the teams can know X contract offer = Band Y compo pick

So if the saints will know the exact pick they are getting back for Gresham before the contract is signed.

St Kilda can have a signed but unsubmitted Gresham contract in front of them when they press send on any trade.

So trade 1 = stkildas own “good pick” to Essendon for Sheil

Then Greshams contract is Submitted and the AFL give the saints the pre approved compo pick back.

Given there is an overlap in FA and The trade period both these trades could happen with all parties (Essendon, Stkilda and Greshams management ) in the same room within minutes.

Also wouldn’t happen with SOS and Dodo. I believe they have a good friendship outside the AFL.
