List Mgmt. Next club to face a rebuild.

Martin and Grimes should retire imo.

Martin will go again at about 500k a season.
Grimes may have to remain given Gibcus just tore his ACL and may not become the highly touted player he is predicted to be by Richmond fans.

The one who looks to have come along nicely is Rioli Jnr.
There is not much else coming through though.
That big forward Lefau looks lively but he turns 26. Not exactly young.

Some clubs are now in a position where a full rebuild is required, but as clubs like Sydney and Geelong have shown (and even teams like the Bulldogs and Giants to an extent), it's best to rebuild gradually on the run before it gets to that point.

Full rebuilds are painful and usually guarantee around 5 years of being a cellar dweller, or at least of not playing finals..

On top of that, if you don't nail most of your picks, it ain't gonna work, and it will take even longer, causing even more frustration for fans.

I think some clubs need to get more creative in their recruitment strategies, and use avenues like free agency more and scour the state leagues for mature talent to greater effect etc.

Sydney don't need to do a rebuild because of their academy, Geelong are the only club who does a successful and true rebuild on the run. (And they're bloody good at it!)

St Kilda are probably a couple of years away from having to start a rebuild.

They'll be middle of the road for a little while then likely fall away

FA doesn't really work in AFL like other sports.
Teams here need to pay a minimum in cap . Means bottom/young sides are overpaying players through necessity to hit minimum cap and actually leaves less to attract the big FA.

The offer is never really large enough to attract a game changing player who knows they may have a few years of a build to come.
It's why most head to a contender rather then get the extra 200-300k from the 'rebuild' team.

A low team IMO really would need to offer double the contract to get the gun FA over a top team.
It's simply not viable to do it in the current set up.

The rest I totally agree with you

Next 5 teams that will have to rebuild and will be bottom 4 for some time.

1. Richmond
2. Adelaide
3. Collingwood
4. Port Adelaide
5. Melbourne

Adelaide ?

Can’t be for real. Will most likely nab a top 5 pick and Tyler Welsh on the cheap to add to a decent crop already

Crows current issues is the putrid output from the older players, something they know and trying to fix via free agency . The youth they have is very good

Richmond feel like they are in year 0 of their rebuild, so this is the first year they will really hit the draft.
Finishing 13th and getting pick 40 is basically a disaster.

Collingwood statistically has the oldest list, therefore Carlton or Gold Coast will rebuild next for some reason.

Richmond have a low pick coming rd.1 of this years draft. Two 2nd round, 3 x 3rd and 3 x 4th.
If we bunch and trade up or if someone like Baker goes home, then we'll get another good pick.
We should draft a good 6-7 kids inside pick 50 at the very least.

A quite a few older regulars are no longer best 22 and will be gone before too long, this season.
Our side will look a lot different rd.1 next year.

Ask any Adelaide supporter their midfield needs work and Nicks won't blood any youth.

I think we’ll go into the draft with the most draft points like 2021. I’d trade up to get the best KPF and mid/fwd first. Not sure how strong this draft is. I haven’t heard anything about the prospects.

Nicks is the worst coach in the league. First aspect that needs work. KPP area definetly the strong point. I just think though they can continue on the current path without a rebuild. They have a ton of father/sons in the next few years so wont feel obliged to throw the baby out with the bath water because of it. Should wind up with 4 or so father/son players on the cheap along with first rounders + ton of salary cap room.

But yeah the obvious answer is Richmond by a landslide you'd think.
Yeah, I think the gist of this thread is the team who will need to navigate their way through the 2027+ national drafts, with their high picks compromised.

Like Richmond had to do throughout the introductory years of the Suns and Giants.

I think that Richmond will be smashing the high end of the 2024-2026 drafts, so will be pretty much through the worst of it by 2027.

As someone else posted, it's the next team to need a high end rebuild that might be in strife.

The 'you can top up forever' thing only works if you get generational footballers walking in the door through trade/FA or academy/father son rorts.

Melbourne won't be the next one but we'll have to do one well before 2030. We're developing a solid core of B graders below 25 but aside from Pickett and Windsor there is no genuine stars, we need to target elite young talent either through the draft or the trade period.

Collingwood have a single top 10 pick under the age of 28 on their list.
N.Daicos.

Pendlebury, Sidebum, Howe, Cox and Mitchell hang them up over the next 18 months, they could very well plummet like a stone.
