Maurice can’t remember him playing out a full game seems to just go missing needs more consistent performances not just one good quarter
wasn't even a good quarter, it was a great quarter of a quarter lmao, thought we were on for a big game from him but didn't do much after the first 5 minutes of the game

He had two more tackles than Macintosh. By the way who did Macintosh shut down, was it Brayshaw 30 disposals & 6 clearances or Serong 29 disposals & 6 clearances?
Think we give Sonsie a good month of football I thought he would make it but sometimes his efforts r not up to standard

I thought Short was good today
25 disposal, 8 marks 2 tackles
80% disposal efficiency
538m gained
7 pressure acts

20 kicks, but how many of them were dangerous and attacked Freo's defence? I saw a couple of dangerous kicks for our own backline, but not many that actually threatened Freo's defence.

Short will have the ball and have high metres gained, but it's because he's a dump kick merchant. His disposal efficiency will also be high because that particular stat is calculated in two ways for kicks: kicks under 40m need to find a teammate to be an effective kick, and kicks more than 40m only needs to find a 50/50 contest for it to be effective. More often than not, Short's long kicks do find a contest that isn't always turned over, so his DE will be high.

That style of blasting the ball long to a contest worked in our Premiership years because we were all about pressure and forcing a turnover, so didn't need the precise ball movement off HB (and we had Houli and then later Rioli to do that when needed).

But in the modern game where ball movement is king, Short needs to be much more precise and damaging, which he isn't.

I would much rather trust Brown and Trainor as our main distributors off HB and either have Short on a wing (so at least he's dump kicking towards goal or into I50 where we can force stoppages), or in the reserves.

Hoos Nominating Ben Miller for today’s Heppell because about the only time I noticed him was standing on the mark when Josh Treacy booted it over his head for yet another goal; with honourable mention to Jayden Short, who apparently touched it 25 times but my only clear recollection of his game was him handballing it to teammate’s feet in the back pocket in the second quarter
I'd probably lean more towards Short as I thought he had an even worse day than Miller. But then again, I did find myself abusing him for various poor disposals or lack of effort that you'd expect from a senior player.

To be honest, I probably noticed the two of them too much to get a nomination. My nomination instead goes to a member of the winning team. Jye Amiss. He was almost invisible today and apart from seeing him kick a point sometime in the third quarter (I think), I don't think he troubled the stats people too often.

A bad, bad day

Really promising start which was great to see. Our run, our carry, our pressure was great.

Being a hot day I knew the kids would tire out. But it’s the basic skill errors that cost us today, not our work rate.

Missing easy goals, missing easy targets, making terrible decisions by hand, dropped marks.

I’ll say it, but Lynch is an absolute shadow of the player he once was.

Bauer I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a full game. Flies for everything

Loved Hugo’s game, thought he was super for us.

Someone has to tell Trainor to stop biting off more than he can chew by foot. Loved what he’s done so far but he’s just too ambitious by foot.

Agree re: Lynch. Time Richmond started planning for "life without Lynch". He isn't the player he used to be anymore.

Miller rebounded well from effectively half time. A completely unfair whipping boy, but gets essentially the best key forward each week. Makes errors but does a lot of unheralded things.

Dow definitely taken a step up in terms of possession quantity, 5th in our team. Kicking definitely not a strong suit but he's having a crack in for 4 qtrs every game.

Maurice plays a complete feast or famine role as a small forward. Think his pressure is hugely valuable, especially as a bench mark for the team.

Think it's clear where the game was won and lost today: stoppages and then the final kick into fwd 50.

In the first half, both TT and Hopper matched, if not bettered Brayshaw and Serong out of the middle and we were able to find targets in space to get good kicks at goal.

In the second half, they clearly won the midfield battle, and were too good by foot (although I think they got the 3 goal buffer right after HT through umpire intervention rather than genuinely winning the midfield battle, but that's enough to put us on the back foot for the rest of the game).

I've said it time and time again, but KMac should only be in the team to tag a Cripps or Macrae type midfielder, or as the sub. He just can't run with the smaller, more agile type midfielders like Neale and Serong cause he can't follow their burst from stoppages.

A lot of talk about Lynch, and whilst I'm under no illusion that he isn't what he used to be, I also don't think we're doing him any favours through ball movement, or who we're partnering him up with. When you have a debutant and someone who isn't a key fwd next to him, I'm not sure what you can expect from Lynch off his recent injury history. If, for example, Lynch was looking the same way if Ryan or Lefau were next to him (as the fwd/ruck) and then we had someone like Faull/Armstrong/Fawcett as the 3rd tall, then I would understand the pessimism around him a lot more. But you have a converted key back (who I'm not sure really understands what to do when he's in the fwd half in terms of fwd craft) and a debutant in Jonty Faull taking the next best key def, which basically makes it Lynch vs the opposition's two best key defs.

Not sure it's suitable for the next couple of weeks considering the teams we play, but I would challenge Sonsie to play a tagging role against the likes of Neale or Serong next time we match up against one of those midfielders. Challenge Sonsie to see if he can crack it as a midfielder by setting him that task, and see how he meets it. That should be his benchmark as to whether we delist him or not.

If that was Lynch doing the deed the media would be all over it and he would get 2-3 weeks. This will get buried by the media as they focus on Balta.
It looks pretty straightforward.

Careless conduct - 1 point
High impact - 3 points (If he failed the HIA)
Head contact - 2 points

Offence Level 3 (6 activation points), carries a base 2-match suspension.
If he takes an early guilty plea, the suspension will be reduced to 1 match.
