Autopsy Round 10, 2025: Suns get it done against plucky Hawks

Ppl tagged me in the gameday thread so i am responding here. Umpires don't affect the result. You only have to look at gameday thread here and then gameday thread on the main board to realise the polarising nature of paying more attention to the umpires than the actual game i really enjoyed the game we went up there with a purpose and nearly came away with a famous win. I think this whole site would be better if there was less umpire whingeing. I mean the game day threads shite and mainly about who got a free kick.
If it is good enough for TV commentators….who are supposed to be balanced

100% agree. The gameday thread on the main board is ridiculous, just pure Bay13 stuff. I can't criticise this board for umpire-watching because I'm guilty of it myself....but from here on I'm going to make more of an effort to watch the game just for the play. Continually analysing every free kick or (non-free kick) is ruining the enjoyment!

I think that's half the problem to be honest. I don't think about umpiring nearly half as much when I'm at the game in person and don't have these clowns dribbling on in the background.

I gave your post a like and agree with your sentiment but tongue in cheek it would help if the umps paid all the throws not the selective few and had a tape measure handy to measure 15 metres.!!!!!!!

Watson's clearly was a throw but some of the one's out of packs...ummmhhhh

Yeah i dont agree with this post, I think our Forward and Backline are good enough, today we were missing a player who is on track to be an AA. And it think we have good enough depth in both areas.

Our midfield is absolutely the issue at the moment - Meek was obviously a significant out and it goes without saying re: Day but we need one more absolute gun mid in our last golden era we had 3 legit A graders in Mitch, Hodge, Burgyone who we could rotate in their with Lewis not too far off that calibre plus another A grader in Smith on the wings and the luxury of having someone like Cyril run through the centre if we absolutely need.

This year (assuming injury free) we have Day and maybe Newcome that is not going to be enough - we have enough young talent and potential to naturally get one or even two more but we need to acquire one as well - I absolutely believe that
The backline is lacking dynamism. Impey was a massive out, but the whole backline changed when Weddle went back. I think the balance of Hawthorns backline has changed massively this year and that is one of the reasons we are not seeing much Hokball. Sic/Scrim/Battle/Barrass is one too many. No Impey made it worse.

With regard to the forward flankers I was referring to CMac and Ginni. At least Ginni gets a kick and is smart (at football). CMac is not getting a kick and is not hard enough ATM.

I think hardness was the difference in the end. Hawks carried a few who did not want it enough.

All in all it was a good performance by Hawthorn after quarter time. But jeez they scored their goals easier.

Montagna will be getting a please explain from Hawthorn this week, there’s a reason he is disliked by most footballers outside st Kilda

Sorry
Noodle
Morrison
Finn

Ain’t up to it, effort is there, but there are better players

I have no idea what to do with Sicily

Morrison was our third highest ranked player last night.

Cool

If you watched that game and thought he was our third best player

There's bigger issues at play

I thought he was really good.

Then saw the ranking afterwards.

Different rating systems value different things of course, but he had a strong impact on the game. Is one of the most underrated tacklers at the club. Isn't generally a strength of pure wingers.

Butchered the ball in the first half

Agreed 100%.

I reckon you can talk about specific decisions without harping on about it impacting a result. Umps get it wrong, players get it wrong, coaches too.

Ride the bumps 😁

Matt Rowell loves a throw. Would make a very good tunnel ball player.

Yep. Its why I'd prefer to get games into Seamus over HH or even Maginness.

Team balance looks better with another small defender over whatever position Maginness is trying to play or expecting HH to make up for Day, Nash, etc. It also allows Hardwick to go forward without the ground ball down back being such a problem.

They scored their goals way to easy when we pressed. We needed to sit back so the middle wasn't a free run into the 50m.

Hopefully that game gave the coaches some valuable info into what's actually breaking down fairly consistently, since when we get it right we're into it up to our eyeballs.

That was an excellent game of football and clearly the best we have played all season.

Managing Meek and Gunston wasn’t ideal, and frankly Reeves and Calsher didn’t really slot in as well as everyone would have hoped.

Still, they are a talented club with a healthy list playing on a ground where they are nigh unbeatable (and we have been uncompetitive ourselves)…. Yet we almost won that game.

Plenty of positives people. We stepped up our effort and output compared to recent weeks. It was pleasing to see.

I look forward to the next 3 games, all of which I think we could win based on last night.

So Meek, Gunners, Jarman, Nash are to come into the side.

Going to be a tough selection this week.

Meek in for Reeves is a no brainer (although I thought big ned game it his all)

Jarman in for BM, needs a full game at BH after being sub for a few weeks, although I like his dash.

Who goes out for Gunners and Nash, Finn and Calsher maybe?

CMac needs to pull his finger out as well.

We made a semi final without Lewis. He's barely played for the last 3 years. He'll have to fight to be back in the side. Can't play 4 tall forwards and 5 tall backs.
You’re kidding yourself.

He might play a game or 2 for box hill for conditioning but he is 100% back in the team after that.

Yeah i thought Ned was really good in the ruck. It was never going to be a game of marks around the ground for the ruckman he was doing what he needed to do. He was subtly blocked in the ruck more in the last qtr. Smart play if you can get away with it.

Probably the happiest I’ve been all year — we’re a contender
I wouldn't go that far, but 100% we're a contender. Despite constant, frustrating disruptions to our personnel we are ticking along very nicely and (with the possible exception of the Port game), we could've easily won every game. Losing players along the journey has given us the vital chance to give fringe players a game, esp Reeves and he'll be much better for the run in case we need him. But at this point everything is going to plan and we're on schedule to peak in Sept, esp with the likes of Day and Lewis to come back in.

Hardwick back for Gunston to come in, Finn out for Nash.

Watson, Moore, Ginni, Cmac, and a resting mid is plenty of small forwards with Hardwick an option.

It will very likely be the best 23 we’ve put on the park this year.

Well, skills were the difference in my opinion. We bobbled the first touch so consistently, especially in the first quarter, while GCS were far cleaner on first touch.

We seem to have been fumbly all year, to the point that I’ve wanted to smuggle a can of stick-um into the MCG and hand it to a player over the fence. I think how far we go this year is entirely dependent on how sticky the boys’ hands get. It’s killing flow and undermining the whole game plan.
