So two of their mids, BOG and second BOG were better than our whole midfield unit, yet we had it over them?

Give it a wash mate
Spot on.

They scored more from stoppage than we did, and uncharacteristically we scored more from turnovers and from forward half turnovers.

Parker and LDU only rated higher than serong, Brayshaw and Bolton as mids, xerri the highest rated player on the ground

Next week will be a great test of our mettle. Previously we've had performances like this, poured the resultant bathwater into beakers, and started sculling like parched desert explorers. Carlton have been vulnerable for ages and the closest we got to them was last year's second match up, and even then we never hit the front. We should be hungry for the win and willing to do EVERYTHING to ****ing win it
Yes, spot on. Even in "round 6" they had a few of their top players out and we got a lesson in football, I agree, we should at the very worst get the win, if we can play with the confidence and fearless attitude of total attacking football we can crush them, the thing is, are we at that stage yet?

We are pretty close and next year I think will be our "coming out "so to speak, the glimpses and other little things we are seeing are coming to fruition, but in stages, the other question then becomes " can we do it to a team like Carlton and send shockwaves through the AFL that we've arrived and the time has come, questions, questions, but what are the answers going to be?:smirk:

A good key defender? Since Rawling has been at the club we have seen Corr, Logue, K Dawson, Pink, Biggie, Shotgun and Whitlock brought onto the list. In addition Comben has been swung down back. What does this say about Rawling? :stern look
It says he brought in three good mature age KPDs, had two misses (one with the MSD the other a trade for a draft pick that was never used) and drafted two young kids who have shown alot of potential.

It's not just key defenders.

It is basically all talls.

What we have is the result of building from midfield out.

Who ever had that plan bent us over and did us raw.

It will right itself if the young talls we do have on the list come on, but Jesus it's painful.

That’s a delicacy in some countries. I read it. In a book.

three good mature age KPDs
Whoever you are counting as the three probably combine to the output of one single decent defender.

Logue injured or goes missing.

Corr often is complete and utter ass.

Both of these players have the stones to leave their player consistenly and not affect the contest they are going to.

Logue cost us a goal this way last night.

Corr cost us 4 vs Richmond.

Groundhog Day.

Again.

It bloody well is. It’s frustrating. I feel like I’ve been saying this since Clarko’s first 2 games (incidentally against west coast and Freo too)

… and through the whole Ratten weeks, so close without the cigar.

… the post-bye form & collingwood disappointment

… the Melbourne “arrival”

Here we still sit.
When is it gonna happen?

If KPDs were perfect no team would score ever. It makes it very hard to defend quick ball movement when our defenders press so hard up the ground to compress the game into our forward half.

Corr is probably at the end now but has beaten players like Buddy, the Kings and others when we had no system up field he's much better than he gets credit for on here. He's probably lost a yard over the last year or two but before that was a very good player. His real issues were fitness/injury.

Logue has been injured yes but is a very good defender when he is fit, as we've just seen. The only time he was poor/missing was when he was picked to play before he was fit enough.

Pink is the one he gets credit for tho. He is a great pick up and after just 20 games has shown he could be an excellent defender in the Hunter S Thompson mold. Even yesterday he was good altho we got flogged for five minutes late in the second quarter. Hard to defend when we push our backline so far forward as I said.

I think this game was a step in the right direction.

Statistically, we did more than just be competitive. We laid real foundations to score a win, but unfortunately freo took full toll in a 10min burst to take it out of our reach.

Of course, it won’t mean much unless we back it up with similar efforts and more importantly… wins.

A few points -
Griffen Logue… there is still a pulse.
K.Dawson needs to be replaced immediately.
Caleb Daniel has reached black hole status now, that’s how detrimental I think he is to the side.
LDU cannot be in our best 3 or 4 players if we are ever to be contenders.
We need another tall forward.
And if you don’t think Lmac deserves his spot in the team, you are wrong.

I can’t work out which was worse the non HTB to Larkey or the HTB to Sheez when he clearly handballed the instant he was tackled. It’s ****ing cheating and no one can convince me otherwise. Both times we are having a shot on goal.
Sheezel one was baffling, as I am pretty sure it was called holding the ball when he hit a target. If it was a throw, then call it a throw.

Speaking of throws, I am pretty sure # 7 paid a free against us in the middle of the ground at a stoppage because the ball was thrown in his general direction and hit the ground.

That would be like paying a free against Cameron yesterday for going over the boundary and giving the ball to someone in the crowd.

We have two problems;

1) Mid forward connection
2) mental belief that we can win games.

The second is slowly ever so slowly turning.

The first is pus.

In the review they should highlight to Larkey and the entire team when Parker motioned for him to lead at the ball carrier and he didn't.

This play is absolutely emblematic of the biggest problem we have. The midfield wanting one thing and the forwards doing the exact opposite.

There is another play where I think it was Wardlaw that kicked it to Larkey who was leading back to goal. We hit the kick and it was weighted fantastically well, however the margin for error in that play was so low, it need to be absolutely exact. You simply cannot run a forward line and require such precision when opposition play pressure games.
The reality is that Curtis and Zurhaar have been leading that forward line for a while now. Darling also has become our biggest tall threat down there. Larkey is a gigantic liability.

I would love to know what his recent success rate is for one-on-one ground ball gets is. He is currently a statue more interested in appealing to the umps than doing the team things.

It’s getting to petulant child levels.

Someone has got to sit him down and tell him to lead hard up to the ball consistently and use his 95kg, 2 metre frame. He is the tallest and flakiest flanker playing the game at present.

Ok, I’ve said my piece.

The usual miserable campaigners posting dribble on here. If you can't see the progression in this team then i feel sorry for you. The effort and relentless tackling pressure was unprecedented. Of course the brain farts are excruciating but they happen. Get over yourselves you negative gits.

Anyone who thinks Duursma isn't a good fit and is just a 'best available' pick is wrong, he's both. Along with another marking key forward, his marking will be such a POD for us around the ground and will hopefully help solve this issue. Cos we sure need it.
I was impressed with his 2nd game which was against Freo.

11 marks getting on his bike around the ground, mainly between the arcs.

Perhaps he is in the 2s for leading at the ball carrier.

Hope so. Cant afford BGZ to be small time for the currency we paid.

Lets not get too excited. We present the worst team in all of VFL/AFL history.

The media have told me that every game this year we were in with a chance was a direct result of how poor the opposition played. No other reason.

So if we can get at least 5 to 6 opposition teams having off days against us a year Id take that as improvement.

I'm resigned to the fact that this year is another learning/ development year where we stuff up again and again. Is what it is.

Next year we have zero excuses. We must see a considerable climb up the ladder and a much better win loss ratio or heads should start rolling. I don't think that's much to expect- we've seen about 8 wins in 5 years of footy.

How about the O’Sullivan missed kick off the ground in the goal square in Q3? Which connected with nothing but air? It’s howlers like that which completely cruelled us tonight when he had all the momentum and dozens of inside 50 entries - but bugger all to show for it.
Hardeman's chase and FOS spoil saved us a goal as well.

Its probably because i watch us the closest for obvious reasons, but we seem to hurt ourselves more than any other team in over running the ball. It leaves the oppo 2-3 free goal side for them and usually ends up with a score against. Incredibility frustrating.

No it doesn’t. They are not “good”. Corr is ordinary. Logue likewise. Pink a battler. Ron is right. We need to add a “good” key defender to our list. 5 plus years of Rawling Rot and the list is full of holes. :stern look

Umpires are meant to help you win? They made one howler maybe 2. But I think we were on the end of a couple decisions that were iffy that benefited us.

Stop using this as an excuse. They’re poor but thats for every team really. They’re incompetent fools with no feel for the game and are lead by a bunch of muppets.

We lost that game, in simple logic. We are shit.
Agree with this (except for the last sentence).
