Jones isn’t fit, given he’s playing limited minutes in the VFL. And Buss has shown no ability to play the Full Back role. If we’re bringing in the best available regardless of role, then Cleary or a few others would be ahead. But for a key back, there’s no better option available to us this week

On displayed AFL 2025 season form, Buss is ahead of Gardner, including as a FB.

Alright: I haven't watched any Footscray games for a number of weeks. Given he seemed to have pivoted from a discussion around Liam Jones availability. To one of team changes in general when it came to this weeks possible selections noting that "previous state league performances." would be a deciding factor.

Taking into account the god of selection integrity...

Who are the players likely to have accumulated enough credit over recent weeks to come into consideration?

Has it been Ryan Gardner?

Who it won't be is any of the mid season recruits ( who I haven't seen). Who still seem a little way off in Beveridges estimation.

Based on Bevo's press conference answers I think you are right and that it will indeed be Ryan Gardner who gets selected.

And in this now likely event, I will hope Ryan plays well and gets whatever job he is given done and helps us get a victory.

However, I think it is far from our best option either for this match or for the season moving forward.

If Jones isn't actually injured he should play regardless of match fitness. I'd be happy with a 3rd quarter sub out. If he is really under an injury cloud then Buss should play. Otherwise, leave Coffield in.

I mentioned in a reply with another poster earlier how I'd looked into umpire bias before (expected FK counts vs actual based on rolling averages).

Nick Foot has the worst impact on us purely based off FK count (based on data since 2015). Our differential ends up, on average, around -2.6 worse than normal if he's umpiring. So if we'd usually expect 1 more free than our opponent, having Nick Foot umpire means we'd expect to get -1.6 differential instead. Williamson used to be positive for us, but his impact is now in the negatives (-0.3) thanks to this year...

There are worse combinations though for other sides. Nicholas McGinness has a -5.9 impact on West Coast.

Or on the other side of things, Nathan Toner has a +4.3 impact on Sydney's differential.

It’s always a Victoria thing….nothing here on the Sunny Coast and I’m all over all week between Brissy and North. People have it and I’ve heard of people having it but no one has been wiped out for weeks that I know of.

Maybe I’ve just got a super strong immune system…..

And the weather is a shit tonne better so you don’t get sick

It's a good question.

It enables both BF and MC to crucify Gardy for a bad game if we lose. But how are we better off for that?

If the planning was there they'd probably play him against the likes of North or St Kilda so they'd know it is going to work when we need him against Hawthorn or Brisbane. And it would give Gardy some much needed credits too.

Gardy himself will of course relish this rare opportunity but he must be wondering what he has to do to ease into the seniors with a slightly less challenging assignment than Brisbane at the Gabba.

The problem is we don't need him for those easy games so he stays in the VFL. But we desperately need him in peak form for the hard games. We make it hard for ourselves by not giving him (or Buss or whoever) a string of games to find their feet at senior level. It's poor player management and selection strategy if you ask me.

My hope is that we play him as a sweeper, not as a one-on-one defender where even Hipwood will give him a bath.
I fear I'm going to be disappointed.

At least you won’t get to watch it live DW….The dismembering of RG by a pack of hungry lions….youve heard of being thrown to the wolves but this is next level….i can see it as one of those David Attenborough films with the carcass of Gards on the ground and Hipwood, Morris etc tearing bits of him….
