I agree but remember if we are going after Reid or Butters in 2026 (neither get traded this year) we may want to save picks for that (eg might trade the r1 into future picks) rather than trade for Marshall

If people are not rating the draft it is very hard to trade into the next year without copping a discount on the pick. Probably the only way would be taking it to the draft and then trading it on the night if there was a team desperate for a particular player. You can plan to do that if you have a heap of picks like Richmond last year but tougher for a team like us to go in with that sort of thing as an actual strategy.

Rhys Stanley has been our starting Ruck every week while fit and available to play
Are we all of a sudden not doing that if it’s Toby?

He can’t play another position and I doubt it’s good for team chemistry to only play him every second game.
If he’s playing AFL level, it’s to be starting Ruck every week.
If the club are being cautious about his body, why would they suddenly change to ramp it up to AFL level week to week.

It’s one or the other, either the guy is good to go and ready to play week by week, game by game.
Or, the more likely is they are taking it slow with him as to not do too much to the bloke and put him back on the shelf.

I’d love for Toby to be ready Round 1 2026 as our full time Ruck, I love the bloke and what he can bring.
I’m just not blindly faithful he’ll be AFL ready to take the rigours week to week.
Don't forget that Rhys played 5 VFL games last year, and even the start of this year when we went with either Conway or SDK to lead the ruck

Even if Rhys is on the list next year, there's nothing to say he'd be the first choice option over someone like Conway when he's available

Don’t get me wrong I want Toby in for good, I worry for his body

I imagine we will use multiple ruckman next yearz yes.

Toby signed a 2yr extension earlier this year - that's not too say the club wouldn't trade him if made that request, but doubtful we'll be delisting him prior to the end of 2027

I didn't watch the first half last night, but the running commentary from those who did was that Conway had a major impact when he came on in the second quarter as he swung the momentum our way due to his dominance in the ruck

Watching the second half it was obvious he was tiring towards the end of the match, but even only playing the 3/4s last time, he still finished as the most dominant ruck from the game. While he's been involved in training & competitive ruck duties for a few months, it may take a little while to get the match fitness under his belt - so not sure last night's match is one to be used to rule him out

We also need to remember that his main opponent last night, Oscar Steene isn't simply a VFL ruck - he's only 4 months younger than Conway, while this is his 3rd season on Collingwood's AFL list & he's been pushing for his senior debut, to be seen at the 2IC to Darcy Cameron should that senior ruck spot open up

I fast forward thru most the 2nd half but the second quarter when Toby came in and was fresh , I thought it was obvious the effect that he had in the CB compared to what Edwards had been doing . I thought he was struggling with OS. Conway just looks like a huge body.

There is something about him that puts whispers of caution when my hopes start to elevate. He has this clumsy Mummy look at times , and it would be fine if he had a resolute history but he radiates than a injury may not be far away. I hope he can lose that thru just staying fit.

I do wonder if the idea of running 3 or 4 guys in the ruck appeals more to CS than having one specific player… so someone like Edwards , if he keeps developing , maybe offers more flexibility.

Most of the elite guys people talk about won't move til next year when they are ooc-zac Bailey is the only one I can see moving under contract this year. It may best to just get worpel and possibly a cheap FA ruck like ROB and save our picks for trades next year.

My pref is trade the pick into next year and throw an offer to the big kid that Saint player today or someone else cheap and OOC if we are not 100% convinced of our ruckmans fitness…. rather than trade it for a contracted Marshall. He might be good but Id say the difference would be not earth shattering.. its our mids that will make or break us over the next couple of years.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see him get it. I mean, who else are the Weagles going to spend their cap on? Their list is an absolute shambles, so it'll be a long time before they play finals...but hey, do you really care when you're getting $2 million a year?

Because it worked out so well for Melb and Oliver

Idiots he isn’t worth anywhere near that
When you are desperate you are desperate, just ask the Saints, on recent form TDK is lucky to be worth a million let alone 1.7

If I'm his manager I am not signing him there (if it's a deal of more than 2 years) unless wce offer close to 2mil a year
The cap will be going up and they are so bad that you want that much money to stay there and play no finals.

If I was his manager I would be arguing about his long term development staying in that shithole , money great but if it stifles his long term development he’s not getting that sort of money long term anywhere

We are already seeing so much behavioural issues on field from him already

If I was him I'd sign for 2 years on insane money with them and then reassess who is the best team to go to.

the way the article reads is they put multiple options to WC… so he will probably have a choice of options and years.

I’ll lower my immediate expectations of Conway but I just saw a few little things in his game I was disappointed in. I think I’m just frustrated in general with our vfl team, I used to get to a lot of vfl games but haven’t as much recently. I just want a decent ruck to take the reins and the ongoing Conway saga is very frustrating.

Isn't it his first game back for ages ?

Got a question on this glorious Monday morning for Cats fans.

James Worpel, he's not an A grader but he's a free hit.
What range would we be willing to pay to pry him out of the Hawks if we were list managers?

We have to understand if we underpay him there's a good chance
1. He wouldn't come
2. Hawks would match and force us to trade picks

So, under that understanding if we offered him 700k-800k range would you be happy with it?
Would it satisfy the Hawks?

Clearly you are just stats watching. Hasn't been playing much midfield in the VFL as they are trying to develop him in other positions. He is a better contested ball winner than Clohesy and Clark.

Best comparison as a player is Bruhn. Very good in the centre square but needs to do more on the outside both offensively and defensively.

I would be OK giving a late pick for him in this year's draft. This draft is bad
Davies played mid in vfl against cats and was very ordinary. Cats dont recruit fringe players

All in for it... plus 700 g a year in today's terms isn't heaps...
Plus Hawthorn have more depth than us in regards to midfielders. So I think Hawthorn can cover his loss
