Review Reigning Premiers Give Home Team A Pantsing

I don’t agree with the first part, I think Brisbane and their game plan were the least influential on the Result. I’d have it this ratio:

  • Freo players shitting the bed: 70%
  • Umpiring: 15%
  • Coaching: 10%
  • Brisbane’s tactics and performance: 5%

Put simply, we kick at least four goals in the first quarter under normal circumstances, the crowd get into and I reckon we pull away in the second quarter and then Brisbane are chasing.

And it wasn’t just the kicking at goal, the fumbles, turnovers, missed handballs were West Coast 2025 like.
As much as the misses and poor kicks and handballs was us shitting the bed, allowing them to take 100 more marks than us was simply a case of not being invested enough in the game to bring heat and pressure. They had a tactic to keep the ball off us and have us get frustrated chasing them around. We would never have been able to do a tactic like this as we dont have the foot skills.

Something changed with NOD. He was holding width earlier in season, getting the ball etc. Now he seemingly is never open, not wide and sucked in to the contest too much.
I'm not sure if it's a coaching directive or he's lost the plot. His stats have halved from what they were since Round 19.

Did the same dumb thing as the week before. Took a mark 60m out and miles in the clear and just held the ball.

Was noticeable because it was one of his very few touches.

Another strong build up another example of this club not being able to handle pressure.

Learn the lessons and move on. Brisbane picked us apart, took away our game and we had no answer.

Part of this is on the players, part is on the coaching. Another example of being comprehensively outplayed.

It's a weird one though. What might have been had we kicked straight and has scoreboard pressure. Brisbane were able to play their way because they had the lead.

I'll put this down to inexperience and an overly emotional week. We must however remove the weakest links and learn the lessons going into next week. It's not done yet.
Can't realistically be a contender if 'inexperience and an overly emotional week' will derail the team and game plan.

Oh and can anyone tell me why when we started to sink in the 3rd why Fyfe wasn’t subbed on?
To have him run on 10 minutes in the crowd would have gone nuts, players maybe lifted.
Instead we get no fanfare, slips on quietly at the break, wins it from the center, gives to Erasmus who kicks it straight back to Brisbane, air goes out of the game.
Did it have anything to do with needing a 20 min warm up it the rooms beforehand?
What ever happened to a few quick run throughs on the boundary...

Pearce and Cox just don’t gel.
OMac and Cox just knew how to do it.

May even play OMac next week given it’s Naughton, English and Darcy.
Agree on Chappy

Our backline needs to evolve, there's some age creeping in and we are missing some help for Clark. Chappy doesn't offer it, nor does the kicking of Cox and don't even get me started on Pearces kicking
Chapman needs a new role.
On the wing or in the middle. Just feel like he has done his apprentice at half back. Time to evolve

Infuriating game. It was annoying to watch us allow Brisbane their chip and mark game, but I didn't think they were generating much from it. What it was doing was sucking the energy out of the crowd, along with our string of misses.

At half time Brisbane had kicked 1 overhead goal, plus 4 more directly from free kicks. They were there, but soft, and careless on our behalf. Meanwhile we missed 6 set shots, plus 3 or 4 more when players were streaming free inside 50. The score was 26-34 and on the balance of play and quality of scoring opportunities, it should have been more like 40-50 to 30 in our favour.

Then the third quarter starts with a dodgy free kick and goal to Brisbane. Rayner kicks a good goal and this is maybe the first Brisbane goal I would associate with them just being too good.

Then we proceeded to butcher more golden opportunities with Darcy missing a sitter and JOM fluffing the end of a botched play where a goal should have been guaranteed. Treacy's play on in the square. Several more running plays where we had numbers and just bottled it. Freddy involved with a lot of the stuff ups.

Brisbane start asserting themselves and kick a few decent goals from strong marks (which should have been spoiled) and a Cameron snap. JL bizarrely leaving Fyfe on the pine while this is happening.

Approaching 3 quarter time the scoreboard should have been close or even in our favour, with Fyfe brought on to fire up the crowd and players. I don't think we would have rolled over in the last if the game was tight.

Shit conversion and panicking is shit football. But sometimes shit just happens and it was not our night. Thought we had moved past shitting the bed under the spotlight after the Hawks and Pies games where we kicked straight, but evidently it is still a problem.

We should be kept in a cot with how much we shat the bed last night. So many errors we just haven’t seen all year. Treacy channeling Tabs by playing on in the goal square was the icing on the bed sh*tting cake.

Did we even kick a goal in general play? Holy **** I’ve never seen a team as flustered as we were running into an open goal - and that’s without the amount of easy set shots missed.

I said it in the changes thread but we are too slow off half back.
Banfield - Worner - Chapman rebounding out of defence ain’t a premiership combination, with Clark too busy defending for his life the poor bastard.

Also, our midfield… it’s just not working. Over reliance on Serong isn’t fair on the guy, teams know if you shut him down, we don’t win.

We need to bring Coops back in against the Dogs and keep him in. JL’s done it before, he needs to do it again.

1000% this! Ryan taking kick ins is a joke.

Every other club has a proper good ball user taking kick ins. Saints use NAS, Giants use Whitfield.

It needs to be Clark, or Young when he returns, or Simpson when he comes back from injury.
I can't see it happening while we play so tall. It's a perceived strength to go long to the contest. Whilst we may take the mark it's slow, predictable and boring.

Yet we did the same thing with Voss on Weitering in the Carlton game in the 1st half and it didnt work.

I am perplexed if we did that plan again.

Feels too defensive for mine
Teams do defensive mark those types of players though.
Andrews was targeted by Sydney last week, it worked.
Darcy Moore has had Voss kicked 6, Morris 6, Henry in the same game 3. Gunston and Chol 3 each last weem.
There is merit to making these loose defenders accountable.
The issue was that none of the kicks favoured any of our forwards in the second half. Voss likes the lead up kick, yet balls were sailing over his head.

It’s strange because the team showed what they’re capable of if they lower the eyes and kick to the lead- v Collingwood, GWS And Gold Coast. For some reason, probably nerves and the intensity, the team panicked yesterday.

Reid kicked a goal from turnover.
Switta put pressure on a short kick. Target missed. Quick tap to Reid.

Reid checked his surroundings and within micro seconds had assessed all options like the Terminator.

1) hand ball to Voss riding shot gun. Probability of goal. 94%

2) draw in Andrews. Hand ball over the top to Amiss who would need to take 2 bounces and run into goal. Probability of goal. 98.7%

3) tuck the ball under the arm. Tell everyone to GTFO. Shank it from 55m. Start it outside the goals. Pitch. Straighten. Through the goals just left of dead center. Probability of goal 99.8%

You guys are seriously overreacting. We kicked like utter spanners but apart from that the teams were pretty close.
Cant See Cheech Marin GIF
