New Port Adelaide Director of Coaching, Andy Collins Interview on SEN SA

Collins regarding his new role: "I've got an education background, a teaching background. I have a lot of coaching experience in different forms not only in state league but AFL league. And hopefully I can just part a little bit of experience in the coaching group and support the playing group at the same time."

"I've got really good knowledge of the history of Port Adelaide and really excited of what that will bring"

Collins regarding Josh: "He's a terrific young man...Highly competitive I love that, I love that in coaches.. got a real competitive streak a real winning streak and thats what he's been able to display as a player and as also as a midfield coach so really excited about supporting him"

It'll be such a breath of fresh air to have a team of coaches focussed on winning.

Really interesting that Collins said he has wanted to get back to SA for some time and he has known Davies well for a long time.

Clearly, Ken didn’t want a strong voice in the coaching group which is sad.
What a self-sabotaging club.

The off-field changes this off-season are great, but the speed and urgency of the announcements make it obvious they’ve been in the works for a long time. The club clearly knew they were overdue.

Yet instead of acting sooner, they were content to plod along and waste years propping up the Hinkley charade.

Criminal.

Watching the Brownlow last night and seeing Hinkley's lolly teeth nonsense again makes me glad to see that juvenile crap being swept out of the building and replaced by a hard-edged reality.
Cahill wouldn't have pulled something so stupid. It's embarrassing that it happened and even more so when he did it in our club colours.

I hope we are taken seriously in the future. Reading this thread gives me hope!

I haven't even been teased about barracking for Port this year, it's been outright pity sometimes. Unbelievable.

Love the sound of this guy, speaks so well and intelligently, loves what he does, loves competitiveness and winning. Another quality appointment.

You just nailed exactly what we need.

Brilliant! He was also a fantastic sounding board for Mitch in his early days of coaching - something that I think will translate particularly well with your new coach.

To be transparent, as good a job as he did taking players from 0 (not afl ready) to 1 (semi-regulars in the AFL), there were slight question marks about his ability to take players to the next stage (good to great).

That might not be a problem for now given where you guys might be in your journey, but still worth noting and it could be very diff for you!

At least he isn't bald. Too many bald headed folks at the club in recent times and they're only now leaving.

Speaks to two things imo:

1) Ken's insecurities and dogmatic positions that meant he wanted (even if not overtly by choice) to be surrounded by an echo chamber of yes men.
2) That the footy committee and by extension, the Board, were so pathetic to allow this to happen.

Is it a case of:
A. Ken not wanting quality assistants, as it would make him feel threatened?, or
B. Quality assistants not wanting to come to Port, because they didn't like him/his reputation?
C. Maybe a bit of both?

I like the fact that he has a teaching background. Seems to hold coaches in good stead.

i always think that’s a great thing to have on a coaches resume - but know that as time moves on there are less and less ex players with that on their resume.

I really enjoyed that, he speaks really well.

Probably A more than B given there have been plenty of seasons under Ken where Port had good assistants.

Put yourself in his situation

The head honcho at a work place for 10+ years.

The last thing you're doing is bringing in someone who threatens or challenges your reign.

It's exactly the reason we should have moved him on years ago.

With our top end talent being elite (JHF, Rozee, Butter, Georgiades etc) I think we have enough ‘great’ players on the list.

We desperately need our bottom half of our list to resemble competitive and capable AFL regulars. This has been our Achilles heel for some time.

We've consistently had elite players that can bail us out of our shitty gameplans over the last decade.

What we need is a way to get structure and system that can be followed by well-developed soldiers. If we can develop good role players and good roles then that allows our freaks like MG, Rozee, Butters and JHF to get off the leash.
