2013-15 would obliterate the 1986-1989 Hawks, using either of the rule sets in place at each time.

In the context of their respective eras though, the 1980's Hawks were far better than the rest of the comp overall than the 2010's version were.

Same could be said for 2023-2025 Lions over 2001-2004 Lions.

The only one I'd give to the more recent group would be, maybe Mitchell over Platten. That's probably the closest of the pairings for me and Platten was a gun.

Rioli and Dipper aren't really like for like, but if you made me choose, I'd take Rioli.

The 80’s team was stacked with elite talent, more than the 2000’s team. But systems will conquer; 13-15 would probably win.

Platten started at 23 so had 4 fewer years than Mitchell. Still managed to kick 3 times as many goals. He was so important to our team. Mitchell certainly in his last 4 or 5 years was a helpful part of our team.

Platten was still playing well even after all our 80s greats retired. Mitchell left when the team was still very strong.

I could probably spend a week thinking about this and change my mind 100 times. Recency bias vs rose tinted memories.

I'd change Dipper v Smith.
Morrisey the Freak or even Buckey v Rioli

88 the best side in my lifetime.

Different eras and rules but under the 80s rules the 88 Hawks would leave the 2013 Hawks dead on the field, figuratively and literally. Dipper would cave Hodges head in, game over.

Almost every match up goes to the 80s side, Platten probably the best player in his side maybe even ahead of Dunstall, best rover I have seen.

Says a lot about Clarckson as a coach, won a threepeat with a worse list which Yabby never did.

Probably worth considering that the late-80s Hawks had really six to seven clubs competing with them for the best players, but mid-2010s Hawks had twelve or so.

For an even contest we have to imagine that the teams have the same access to modern training and tactics. Give the 80s team a few seasons to adjust and they would beat the threepeaters, especially with 1980s umpiring. More champions players.

If the '80s team played the 2010s threepeat team?

Clarko's full-time professional squad would absolutely crush the skilled semi-professionals from the '80s.

Probably on strength, fitness, and conditioning alone.

In the 2010s, players tended to run far further during the course of a match than in the '80s.

Having all 18 players in the forward or defensive 50 was far less of a thing in the '80s, when the forward 50 was often left to just Jason Dunstall.

(Even flooding didn't really become a common tactic until the '90s, and the forward press in the 2000s.)

Defensively, Clarko's team runs a spatial/rolling zone defense. The '80s players, not used to that, would find it difficult to find space to kick to.

Defensively, the '80s team would try to play man-on-man against fitter and stronger professional players who are used to running the length of the ground all day.

So tactically, I'm sorry to say, but Yabby Jeans just can't lay a glove against Clarko (with the likes of Hardwick, Beveridge, and Fagan as assistants).

And it wouldn't be close. The '80s team maybe keeps pace until half time. Then they'd be completely exhausted during the 3rd quarter and get blown away by about 10 goals.

You can't compare it like the above. It'd all things being equal. That era vs this era but with all the same training and knowledge. Of course hawks of the latter would win.
