Moot point anyway - sure the HFC list management team know the dates etc.

Probably the paperwork for SSP potentials etc can't be submitted until today given the rookie draft was only friday and you'd need to contact managers etc to see interest thereafter. Would expect extras not coming on until later in the week.

These suggestions of putting a first and final offer to Essendon to accept within the first hour of next trade period aren’t likely to work.

Essendon have shown they don’t operate logically or even with their best interests in mind. They operate on emotion and ego. For them it’s all about the optics.

It almost doesn’t matter how good a deal we offer, if it’s presented by us as an ultimatum then it will look like they were strong armed.

They’ll want us to come back again with a good offer and then make out like they’ve been able to further increase that over a drawn out trade period.

But nothing close to this year’s offer will go on the table again next year. To trade Merrett anyway for less next year is going to look like a loss and like they’ve caved. Their biggest win would be to waste our time for consecutive trade periods.

So unless Essendon change how they fundamentally operate I think Merrett is 2027 UFA or not at all.

At the end of the day, Rosa and Scott wanted the Merrett deal to go through and were happy with what we offered until Welsh nixed the whole thing.

Embarrassing for a professional sporting organisation but their members seem to be celebrating keeping a player against their will and overriding their entire recruiting team and coach as some sort of masterstroke.

Unless they get a normal President and can free themselves from the shackles of coterie groups and Sheedy etc, there's no chance we deal with them again.

Regardless of the outcome of trade week, Merrett approaching us and essentially walking out of Essendon to try join us was about as enjoyable as a 14th flag.

Utter humiliation of a football club and it’s why they’re celebrating what they can.
