Under 23s trial game between Port & Crows

Agree about Clurey but what's your concern with Dougs?

I think his skills and decision making are a concern. Numerous occasions last year his mistakes cost goals. Punching when he should be marking is also a trait he needs to work on. There was an occasion yesterday where he did a great pickup and run on the outer wing but then completely undid it by missing the handball target. Just think this stuff happens too often.

Tend to agree on Dougs , still think he’s best 22 but I wouldn’t be averse to having him be a swingman if we don’t need his height in defence on the day . Agree on some of his skill execution and decision making but still see him as an asset .

I thought he was alright in the trial game. Certainly competitive in ruck. Others disagree. It's why eye witnesses are the most unreliable factor in a crime case. ;)

Possibly true with me.

I was an eye witness and in my opinion Ladhams is a better ruck than Frampton, Frampton is a better forward than Ladhams, but neither will make it.

Waiting for Hayes.

Wtf are people writing off Clurey? Had a good season last year and finished top 10 in best and fairest. Dougal is a far bigger concern for me.

Second defender picked each week.

Yeah, I don't get the Clurey criticism either. He's been developed as our go to lock down tall back for 4 seasons now ... we're not suddenly going to throw that plan out the window and give somebody else a go instead.

Cause apparently he doesn't take enough up ground intercept marks in somebody's Ouija board analysis.

Doogs ceiling is so, so much higher.

You're really just guessing here. I like Dougal a lot, but his cult hero status gets him some extra points around here.

Honestly though, who really cares? They're both best 22 so i'm not really sure why people play the comparison game over two players with very different attributes.

What I miss most about that list was the toughness, uncompromising players we had. There was a stage when teams legitimately feared to play us. Tredrea, Pickett, Carr, Wilson, Wakelin, James, Wanganeen, Francou, Kingsley etc. Not all were elite players, but they made 50/50 balls a 60/40 contest. Furthermore, in the final quarter when they had to put their head over the ball and play their role for the team, you knew they'd get the job done.
Hardwick too. We had some tough mother****ers in the early noughties.

The other play I noticed was the movement of our players in the centre square after a bounce. That was as dynamic as I have seen for a while. The movement allowed us to release the ball to players in motion and unbalance defensive set ups.

Great call, Ford. Even more impressive given that some of the players in the centre-square were hardly midfield specialists.

There seemed to be a lot of well organised, synchronised movement of our mids in the first few seconds after the bounce down. Framptom seemed to be a part of that. The give and go handballing, knock ons and tap ons to each other was very dynamic and helped to release our mids into space.

Someone else here noted Drew's ability to take-up good defensive position at stoppages at U18 level. That was also noticeable yesterday, as was his excellent tackling (he had 10 tackles in the 2017 SANFL GF from memory).

Some of this yesterday might have come down to Drew as an individual mid, some because the Crows' have a weak U23 midfield, but hopefully most was the result of much better coaching over the preseason. If that's the case, our other more experienced mids should also look sharper over the coming weeks.

He’s a decent kick too. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get some cameo midfield minutes at some point during his career.

Not sure Dooogz is the sharpest tool in the shed, reckon he might struggle with revolving doors.
Imo his best position is CHF he's a beautiful kick for goal. Last year he did something really weird/dumb in AFLX,
the commentator basically said wtf was that, Hammer said well that doesn't surprise me at all.

Seriously do not get the Brad Crouch love. I've watched the game twice now and I thought he had zero impact with his usual meaningless disposals game. Crows board are pumped over his performance some how :drunk::drunk:
He's missed a lot of football since he first came onto the scene. Even in 2017, when he played quite a lot, he was talked up a fair bit but was largely ineffective imo. Can panic with the ball like a young player does. Needs continuity.

I don't think he's got the potential to be elite but definitely A grade. A lot has to go right though.

Thought your draft picks looked great. Think you've really nailed them after the Rozee pick. Rozee will be a star.

As Feel says Jarrod is strong, watched him in the Magpies and stood near him at the 3/4 time huddles and he is a powerful unit.
When was the last time you saw him moved off his line. He aint treacle slow either.
The 6-6-6 is going to expose slow defenders and reward quick forwards especially smalls.
The other thing we need to realise is that a lot of our players have not reached 50 games. A benchmark set by many as
one where you know if a player is going to 'make' it.

I'm crap on stats but if one of you put up our list with games played it might shock many.
Dooogs Amon Lienert Clurey Marshall etc. Something to remember when judging players.

Perhaps we can just agree to disagree on what a strong or powerful (which I assume to mean noticeably stronger or more powerful than an average 6'4" AFL player) player is.

I did see Lienert quite closely in the intra club match also.

I cannot see a single height/weight measurement that has him above 89 kilos. Jonas, Dixon, Frampton, Wines, even Broadbent who weighs 90kg and is 4cm shorter, look like powerful units, and this is supported by their height, weight. And Port Players are generally not as strong as players in Victorian Clubs from my observation (REH agrees). Lienert looks very average to me. However he is still young and will presumably bulk up somewhat.

I do agree generally with the 50 game benchmark for judging players. However noticeably to me, Lienert looked more composed and skilled in his first AFL game than many of our players who had played MORE than 50 games last season. That has to count for something.

I never said anything about his pace and I don't disagree. He is not slow and is a smooth mover for a tall guy. He looks like a real athlete.

Dougal Howard v Tom Clurey is shaping as the new Aaron Young v Andrew Moore. Let's not, please...

Nah, Doogs and Clurey are actually good.

Fair cop, while we're doing mutual massaging think you guys might have nailed quick small forwards to fill in for
Betts when he goes and Cameron leaving. Under the 6-6-6 setup small quick forwards will be even more important.

A lot more to strength than just mass though, Lienert could just be one of those naturally wiry guys more difficult to remove than a tree root. Broadbent might have a bit of weight behind him but if he´s not dynamic and fast-twitch then it´s not a huge advantage.. see "looks like Tarzan plays like Jane".

Have I suggested anyone else recently?

Not that you have suggested anyone else, but we often hear from others (players, coaches, commentators and other BF posters) that player X has the potential to go through the midfield. The latest obvious example being Burton. I would prefer that Clurey holds down FB or CHB for the next 6-8 years, and becomes elite at doing so.

I don’t think it’s exclusive to the midfield though, we always hear about Hammer at HF or Bonner on the wing. Sometimes moving a player from their traditional position works too, hopefully Ebert and Ryder become prime examples up forward this year.

Besides it’s February and negativity has been outlawed so if I can’t post hypotheticals I’ve got nothing. I’m gonna have to start talking about the weather or some shit!

No hypotheticals are fine
