What a Good Friday! Any time Robbie and Westhoff are our worst players, and we win anyway, is great; a comprehensive 42 point victory over the reigning premiers on their home turf in wet conditions is sensational!

A triumph for the coaches this week. We went in with a clear plan, to harass and block the WC defenders who love playing loose and setting up their play. Marshall, Ebert and Rozee made sure that they were responsible for their opponents, while the midfielders hunted the Eagle mids to ensure that the delivery to the forwards wasn't precise; as a result, Jonas and Clurey were able to blanket Kennedy and Darling, and frustrated them into stupid errors. Our pressure was relentless, never giving them clear play or loose men. We played on at every opportunity, and while it didn't always work out perfectly, it's still far better than slow play allowing the defence to settle. We kicked it low and hard to identified targets, not allowing the Eagle defenders to zone off.

Dropped away a bit after half time, but the damage was already done. We should be good in the wet, with our bevy of big-bodied mids, and Wines, SPP, Rockliff, Boak, Ebert and Drew were magnificent as a collective tonight.

For once, we backed our game style to be good enough and were proactive rather than reactive. We adapted to the conditions seamlessly in the second term, eliminating the switch and excessive handballs and shovelling it forward

PLAYERS:
Powell-Pepper - First goal the result of front and centre roving, and he is carving an unlikely role as the rover in this team. No left foot is a problem, it's a common theme at Port. Hoping the ice on the calf was precautionary.

Burton - Gave away first goal, but showed pace to chase down Petrucelle. Also spent time on Yeo and Ryan. He adds steel to the backline, and he seems to have a good footy brain. Needs to work on his guiltyface.

Ryder - Lost the headwear and seemed freed early. The wet conditions made it tough, but he provided a focal point and competed strongly as a forward.

Ebert - His best forward role this season, blocking out the Eagle interceptors from keep marking contests even, and got a couple himself.

R Gray - It's just not happening for Robbie so far. Cannot collect cleanly, and is a liability when he gets it, but if he can get some confidence, we know his quality.

Boak - Brilliant, ran the tag of Hutchings into the ground and was enthusiastic. Gave away a couple of unnecessary frees, but his energy and workrate infects his midfield mates

Rockliff - OK without dominating. Just his positioning and leadership around stoppages is a boon for the younger players. Still had 32 disposals, but wasn't damaging; however his pressure caused the Eagle mids to be ineffective

Marshall - Straightened us up, and kept giving a contest. He does a lot that doesn't count as a stat, like a 200cm Cyril - little tap-ons, etc. Must stay in for the season.

Wines - Well done, that's the way to silence the critics. Crucial set shot goal was the moment my palms stopped sweating. 35 disposals with 21 kicks is the opposite Ollie to what we are accustomed. Fantastic inside stoppages and spread really well. Back to his best

Clurey - Had Darling, and whilst helped by upfield pressure, stuck to his man and spoiled well. Has developed into a really reliable defender who knows where to be and what to do in most situations.

Butters -.Low on stats, high on impact. Has that footy nous that can't be taught.

Rozee - Hurt an ankle in the first, but shook it off. Class goal near 3/4 time showed pace and composure.

Duursma - Fantastic off a wing with his run and penetration, but I'm also really impressed with his body strength and contested work. A competent replacement for Polec already, with room for growth.

Bonner - Probably had Petrucelle, and conceded him space running forward of the ball, but once again his contested work was improved, and his ball use was good

Drew - Great goal in the second on his left. Adapting well to his role of part-time inside/part-time outside, and looks completely at home in the big league.

Lycett - Very good in ruck contests, didn't get involved much around the ground due to conditions.

Howard - Very good. That key moment in the third where he left his man to spoil a free opponent, then laid a tackle and won a free, had me clapping the telly. The resting ruckmen for the Eagles had no impact.

Byrne-Jones - Struggled to contain Ryan, but tried to run off him and stuck to his task.

Westhoff - Visibly low on confidence, but at least had some presence tonight.

Jonas - Took responsibilty for JK, and beat him comfortably. Looked like a rock inside D50, kept his feet and kept the ball in front of him.

Houston - Love this bloke, took out the rookie Oscar Allen before quelling Cripps, and his ball use and calmness are reassuring. A development success story for the club.

S Gray - Actually pretty good in a big game for once. Won several clearances in the midfield and kicked a couple of goals.

What a difference a Marshall makes to getting some order in our forward lines.

Some poor conversion, but if our numbskull coach can’t see how much better a side we are with Todd playing then just put an inanimate rod next to a mic and headset and we’d do better.

Kick straight ya bastards.

Great to win and to win like that. That was tough, relentless and aggressive. Plenty to sharpen up and need to take our chances.

Rozee, Drew and Duursma were great. Butters was a touch off, maybe needs a rest but love the endeavour.

Marshall was so important, would love to have seen him nail those chances.

S.Gray was excellent, really good.

Impressive improvement in the way we moved the ball quickly out of the middle. In transition we moved it quickly into the forward line and put maximum pressure on their defense..

Every defense in football will always panic when the ball gets in there quickly to one on one contests. Skillful footballers are forwards, scrubbers play defense. Get it in there, quickly and only good things happen.
