Changes vs Fremantle - Round 5

Our match committee and their bizarre set of selection rules which clearly prioritise youth over experience, and seemingly prioritise certain personality traits over performance, seemed determined to derail our promising start to the season.

How can Young remain in the team after last week's performance?

How can Fletcher Roberts not be selected when the team is crying our for another tall defender?

The only answer that I can think of is because we have match committee who value self imposed selection rules above winning games.

Big Question. Imagine we win this game, (though) highly unlikely. Will we all say, we are such a great young team with visionary coaches who can only make one change and still win the game? Just thought I would put it out there. Who knows it might happen and I will say: "Listen big footy members, it takes a genius like perro_loco to say that you were all wrong". Now, if we lose, well, I told you guys the coaching is shait. Hope we win, but looks tough. GO DOGS!!!
If we can string more than 2 in a row I will be close to being swayed...

If Naughton is being sent back then that's either Bevo giving up on him as a forward or him giving up on Roberts. Campbell all over again, screaming out for someone in that position and playing everyone except them. Not that I blame him on ignoring those two. Young is young enough to have some hope for improvement but he should be getting nervous right about now. It's not easy to get back in this coach's good books.

I said I'd be happy with two of Lynch, Lipinski, or Roarke Smith so you can guess my mood. I just don't understand. They even fit the damn versatility criteria! I'm getting reminded of last year where we went out of our way to not play Greene, finally bit the bullet right at the end of the year and instantly regretted not trying it sooner. But nah, just play three forwards and throw whoever in the other spots. Not to mention those three aren't exactly in AA form right now. I guess Bont had a couple of four goal games playing injured last year so maybe an even fitter Bont can kicked 5 or 6. Playing against Hamling though...

I'm not surprised, just disappointed.

lets face it we are in a rebuilding phase. bevo doesnt care about the wins but rather teaching players to play multiple roles and improving them for the future.
just get games into the young players. i dont think the club had finals in plans this year.
bevo is using this developmental period to experiment

the sooner we just accept it the better.

Towards the end of last year when the form improved they had two rucks, in Trengrove and Roughy, a genuine key back Naughton, and a key forward in Schache. It worked ok. Fair enough Schache’s form dropped off and they had to drop him, but for crying out loud bring in appropriate players to ensure the structure is maintained.

Lewie Young is only a couple of months older than Lachie Young. He's a pup, still has plenty of time but he didn't look ready for AFL - held onto the ball too long. Clearly needs another pre-season or two and I suspect the club will hold onto him.

IF we are simply in a rebuilding phase, part of rebuilding is to develop specialists as well as versatility for a few. IF we were actually doing this with some purpose we would have a chance at winning. What we are doing with both team selection and game day placement and education is like a dogs breakfast and does not support any narrative

Further to this, if indeed Beveridge was using the season for just development and experimentation, the players would soon get wind of it and lose the passion to win altogether.

Still really annoyed with selection we are constantly setting the players up to fail with the team we role out, giving up size and making winning the midfield battle essential to staying in the game.

We need to play our young key postion players, if we play Lewis young and Schache and they get out muscled or beaten by more experienced opponents I can cop that but having them in the vfl as we get monstered having guys giving up 10+ centremetres every week is frustrating.

The sooner we get games into these guys the sooner we know if they will make it or not, we learn nothing by dropping them off a bad game or two and in young’s case off a decent game.

I get all the questioning of Schache and his effort yet his performance against the pies statistically was equal to Naughtons against the blues. Obviously Beveridge has no patience because Schache gets dropped for his performance and Naughton gets chucked back in the backline for his. Great for confidence

Really annoyed Williams has been chopped again.

Last year he proved a lot of things. One of those being that he is a player who thrives on confidence. Initially, he dwelled on the ball way too often and his glimpses of class were followed by moments of obvious inexperience. Then, suddenly things clicked. He ironed out the silly mistakes and became a very reliable half back. This year Bevo has stuck him in a position he is clearly not suited to and then flicked him out of the team when things don’t go right.

Get him at half back, especially while Suckling is injured, and get some continuity in his game.

Can’t Bevo just be normal for a bit?

Looking at the two teams on paper, I can't see a single contest we will lose. Bevo's a genius.
(Any truth to the rumour that Lipinski and Smith will be late ins for Trengove and English?)

Keep Le young. Kid will be a gun. Has the frame to put on the kegs so 1 or 2 more preseasons and he will handle the gorillas.

Games or goals?

Well put! LOL.
Seems like they got wind of it around about Thursday last week.

Absolutely. That's what destroyed the relationship between the players and McCartney (or was at least part of it). BMac was quite open about saying when he took over in 2012 that he didn't expect success for five years*. I recall Gribben's speech at the BnF when he thanked Rocket for teaching them to win. If the players go out knowing the side is an experiment, or a training session, and they're not likely to win, nothing would make them lose heart quicker. Implicit is that the coach doesn't have faith in them.

*Ironically, success did come after 5 years!

I thought apart from a couple of obvious bad errors Young did ok, and took a great intercept mark. I'm happy to give him another go.
Has speed and a bit of height, two things we lack.

How much better does this team look than the one we've selected.
They're all fit Bevo.....

B: Wood Naughton Crozier
HB: JJ Cordy Williams
C: Lipinski Libba Hunter
HF: Mclean Trengrove Dickson
F: Lloyd Schache Gowers
Foll: English Bont McCrae
Int: Wallis Dunkley Lynch Daniel

Out: Richards, B Smith, Young, Hayes (Richards/Young to the backline, Smith & Hayes on the ball in VFL until they're better than someone in that position)
In: Lipinski, Trengrove, Schache, Lynch

A bit harsh on Smith, his workrate has been better than half our "star mids" and he has gradually improved each week, where everyone else has been up and down. A decent kick and has decent leg speed, which the rest of our slow plodders do not.

The three biggest criticisms of our midfield by AFL fans and media have been foot skills, work rate and lack of pace. Smith ticks all three, and has won a few clearances as well. Yes he hasn't been hugely impactful on the game, yes he needs to find more of the ball, but first year players tend to struggle with both. I'd be dropping a Dunk or a Wallis first.

Agree with the rest though.

Would have Roberts in, Schache out and Naughton forward. Smith in instead of Lippa too.

But yes to Lynch. Big yes.
