Lyon talks a lot of sense. It’s too bad he’s one of the few in the media. He’s 100% spot on too. Mitchell hasn’t walked in and demanded Clarko leave after just agreeing to the plan a week ago.

Lloyd actually did his best to shoot down Kane when he bought it up on the Sunday Footy Show the other day too.

Clarko has been contracted to coach next year, the board made this decision a while back. What has the fact that Sam Mitchell 'would like clean air' got to do with this? Sam was told he will take over the senior role in 2023. The board made the decision that he needed another year coaching at VFL level but now Sam seems to calling the shots.
This aint going to end well.

Don’t believe everything the AFL media hypothesise.

Hmm I don’t know
Have a look at posting history at how many times claims Caro to be on the mark

Informant?
Or Tom Morris or Edmund??? She hasn’t been far wrong even if you believe Jeff’s pen. This will now just roll on and on, tomorrow’s another day.

Dear Hawks supporters,
Please note - my sister's neighbours husband works with lady who knows another lady who has a cousin with a daughter who works at a salon and often cut's Justin Greeves brother's wife's hair - and she clearly stated recently, hand on bible, that an article in a recent edition of the Women's Weekly she read revealed that Jeremy Clarkson and Shane Mitchell absolutely hate each other....!!!!

No apologies required but I do trust this clarifies my position on the subject, as for some reason my journalistic professionalism and integrity is being questioned.

Sincerely,
Caro

If Mitchell has come in a week later and said he doesn't want Clarkson there next year he shouldn't be the next coach because he has gone back on his word a week ago
But he doesn't believe Mitchell has done that
He also seemed to imply that what he was hearing from the club didn't match at all with Caro's story.

Couple of things:

- someone or multiple people are backgrounding the media. We have always been a tight ship so clearly not all is well. Even if clarko and Mitch are on the same page, others internally aren’t.

- whether the decision is right or wrong, it was ultimately rushed. That’s not to say it wasn’t considered as part of a longer term succession plan, but there is no way a proper decision-making process was followed to enable the board to make an informed decision at that time.

- finally football club boards are generally neither corporate heavyweights or strong football people. I shudder at the thought of some of the corporate lightweights on our board making football decisions without the benefit of a review of sorts to inform them. They are really a bunch of well meaning people with some reasonable business experience and a hawks scarf in the cupboard. About as equipped as any of us to make this call without the benefit of external advice.

Again not saying right or wrong but the whole thing is a joke in how it was conducted. Jeff and a few others got their outcome and sold it as a proper process.
Corporate lightweights on our board? Go and educate yourself about who is on the board and their backgrounds. Collectively a very diverse, successful and competent group of people.

Kennett was always going to say that though, he can’t outright say he wants Clarko gone as he doesn’t want to pay him out.

Given some of the insider information on here. I’d say the preference from up high would be Clarko move on in 2022 but he won’t be pushed due to the payout.

I don’t think there is any rift though between Clarko and Mitchell though, that’s more spin than anything. Though Mitchell may well prefer to coach 2022 he won’t be holding that against Clarko.
I have the same opinion 👍🏽

The new deal will see Burgoyne, 37, take on a part-time Indigenous advisory role with the Hawks in 2021.

He will transition into the off-field role full-time once his playing commitments are finished.

Burgoyne's off-field role will see him assist Hawthorn in the development and implementation of its Indigenous programs.

The club said the programs would "focus on employment, education and health outcomes as the key pillars to engaging and empowering Indigenous communities".

If this pans out count me as 100% pumped to be keeping the great man at our club. What an asset.

Please delete if its not ok to post this : ( from Jeff of course )

Hi there, fellow Hawkers.

Well, what a roller coaster ride we have experienced over the last two weeks.

Two weeks ago, we were thoroughly thrashed by Fremantle. Last Saturday we had the most wonderfully stirring draw against Melbourne.

17th on the ladder drew with the ladder leaders. After a flaky first quarter the boys applied themselves as though there was no tomorrow. We never gave up, and although our skill and ball handling at times leaves a lot to be desired, their will, determination and persistence carried the day. We all should be immensely proud of their effort.

I will never forget the scribblings of former coach Allan Jeans who wrote before a Grand Final we won, “if you win the tackles, you win the game”.

Such was the case on Saturday when we delivered 81 tackles to Melbourne’s 60.

Remember what our strategy is: to get as many games as possible into the legs of our new younger players. Last week we had ten players under-22 learning what AFL football is all about, learning week on week what it is to be a team player and learning the culture that is Hawthorn.

We are not going to win every game, but we are building towards something special.

Can I turn to another subject? Someone sent me a clip of what Caroline Wilson said on Footy Classified on Monday night. I do not watch the show, and I suspect many of you do not as well.

She made a few incorrect comments and assumptions.

Last week there was a scheduled meeting between coaches Alastair Clarkson, Sam Mitchell, our Head of Football Rob McCartney and Leading Teams Founder Ray McLean.

It is one of several meetings that will take place over this period of transition. These meetings are designed to work out the individual and shared responsibilities between Alastair and Sam as we prepare for the transition at the end of next year’s season.

These meetings are common sense. We would be derelict in our duty if these meetings did not take place. It is a surprise to me that some, including Ms Wilson, are surprised that they are taking place.

Ms Wilson described the meeting as a mediation meeting. Even though she was directly told by our CEO Justin Reeves that this was incorrect. These meetings are and will continue to be a very basic part of planning out our succession plan.

Ms Wilson chose to ignore this truth and continued to refer to it as a mediation meeting.

Let me be very clear, this was a planned meeting, and our players knew it was going to take place. We like to be transparent at Hawthorn and there will be more of these meetings to plan our future.

Ms Wilson also inferred there had been some sort of blow-up between Alastair and Sam. This is also wrong.

Both men have behaved admirably since the announcement. Of course, they are going to have different views on different aspects of the game. This is how good football clubs are developed. Our leaders need to be able to challenge each other. I would expect nothing less. But to characterise a respectful exchange of ideas as a “blow-up” makes clear that not only was she not in the room, she has no idea how or what was discussed.

Finally, she concluded the segment by saying that I would be happy to pay out Alastair’s contract and have Sam coach next year. This is a complete fabrication. I have always said I want Alastair to complete his contract, not only because at Hawthorn we honour contracts but also because Alastair has said several times publicly, he intends to honour his contract.

I make these comments only to inform you of the truth. As members this is what you are entitled to, the truth.

Some commentators have questioned our succession plan. Many commercial organisations insist their CEOs identify and train people within their organisation to potentially succeed the CEO. It is good practice across the world.

Sam Mitchell came back to the club because Clarko saw in Sam a potential senior coach. We have seen enough of Sam to believe he should be eventually our next senior coach.

Coaching is not easy. It can be a very lonely job. You need to be able to work with many different characters and Presidents. Those skills need refining.

We at Hawthorn are in a good place, with good people. Yes, we are following good governance practices, but those who often sit in judgment, including journalists, have never themselves had the experiences or the responsibility of leading anyone or any business. They are only interested in breaking through the crowd to be noticed, and so much of what they say is coloured, not professionally sourced, or just opinion not based on fact. Matters not to them as they pursue headlines and ratings.

In the meantime, we get on with our job. All of us. For no one of us is more important than the club of which we are part.

Of course, like everything the proof is there for everyone to see, and what we saw last Saturday says to me, collectively, we are on our way.

Stay well, and COVID free. Get vaccinated so we can crawl our way back from these horrible lockdowns.

As expected Jeff not pulling any punches here; "I don't watch the show and I suspect many of you do not as well" - BANG!!!!!

I watch it sometimes, but turn off for Rossy Lyons commentary, he whines and yells. Feel sorry for anyone he coached. Talk about getting sick of. Voice, it takes just 5 minites

If I was Sam Mitchell I would absolutely want Clarkson to see out his final year. That way he gets a second year of running his own team and working closely with Clarko; it's a developing list so one more year of that will be to his benefit.

If the players he believes in get selected for the firsts then great, if not he can work closely with them at BH to try to get them further along for 2023.

I doubt it'd bother the players, probably hardest for the other coaches I would have thought, serving two masters to some degree. If you vehemently agreed with Clarkson and disagreed with Mitchell on some aspect of strategy it might be a bit tricky.

Things about being alpha, stubborn, driven etc I don't see as issues at all. It's master and apprentice stuff, it wouldn't surprise me if Clarkson has been surreptitiously grooming him from way back and Mitchell wasn't even aware of it. (That's how grooming works...apparently!).
