Draft Review 2010 - Revisit the 2010 Draft

I will have a bit of bias in my opinion but being an outside player in a star studded midfield is easier than being an outside player in an inferior side. Gaffs one of those wingmen that keeps getting the footy and still has an influence when our midfield is getting dominated. Last two years Gaff has taken his game into a another level averaging close to 30 touches a game. Im not sure Smith would be as prolific if he went to a side the blues, suns or etc. Smith is defs a top 10 player tho.

Heppell is the definition of a nothing midfielder.

Doesn't rack up huge numbers.
Doesn't break lines.
Doesn't have silky skills
Doesn't apply immense tackling pressure
Doesn't dominate clearances.

Who is he ahead of?
I love when posters prove beyond a shadow of a doubt they know nothing about football.

Jarryd Lyons 30th? Based on the above list he is comfortably top 15.

If you think I'm wrong tell me which of the above categories Heppell falls under?

I love it when posters attack other posters because they don't have a shred of argument.

Puopolo is nearly 30 and will probably be out of the league in 2-3 years, can't see how he would get picked ahead of JJ, Brodie Smith or Darling for starters.

Heppell isn't having the best year this season but this is just ludicrous.
Still havent told me which of the above categories Heppell is good at.

Heppell doesn't specialise in any aspect of midfield, he's not terrible, he's just mediocre.

All you have to do is watch him to appreciate him. I know it's hard to praise Essendon players as a Collingwood supporter but sit down and watch him. Big time player who steps up when his team needs him, he wins plenty of contested ball, is a very efficient user of the ball and provides his team with plenty of attack with his run and carry towards the 50.

You still haven't gotten the point.

Heppell is an all around ok midfielder. The point is that he doesn't provide the run and carry like Treloar, Zorko, Hannebury do. Doesn't have elite disposal efficiency like Pendlebury, Gaff. Doesn't dominate clearances or apply tackling pressure like Rockliff, JPK, Selwood. Doesn't kick goals and contribute to the scoreboard like Dangerfield, Martin, Beams. To top it all off, despite being very mediocre in almost every category, his lack of weapon and lack of impact on the game per disposal isn't made up by quantity like Neale/Mitchell either. He just lacks a point of difference to be worthy of a top 10 player let alone top 3 like the other guy thinks...

I have him right in the midst of other B graders like Adams, Prestia, Tyson. Probably a 55-75th best midfielder in the league, and would be the 3rd or 4th best midfielder of a strong team.

You can't seriously rate Gaff higher than Heppell. Guy is the definition of a stat padder.

You can't possibly rate Heppell higher than Gaff. He may be a stat padder but so are 99% of outside mids... It's their job.

Gaff is elite by position (wingers/outside mids)
Heppell is average at best for his position.

I think it's wonderful that you come up with a few arbitrary categories in an attempt to discredit Heppell. It's delicious. And you still get it wrong.

You say he doesn't kick goals? Well guess what, he does. In fact, he kicked a critical Captain's goal from outside 50 on Saturday. He has nearly twice as many goals as Joel Selwood.

You say he isn't dominate clearances? He had 6 on the weekend and is above players like Kelly, Pendlebury, Bontempelli, Crouch and Steven in total clearances.

You say he doesn't break the lines? Well, he's 14th best player in the league for score involvements (ahead of Pendlebury, Mitchell, Wines, Treloar, Sidebottom, Shiel and Gaff, among others). He's 16th in total inside 50s in the league (above Treloar, Ablett, Pendlebury, Ross, Gibbs, Steven, Gaff, Mitchell and Rockliff).

You say he doesn't have silky skills? That's just bollocks from you. He's super clean. Makes time stand still in congestion.

You say he doesn't "apply immense tacking pressure"? What does that even mean? He's got more tackles than Dustin Martin, Dylan Shiel, Steele Sidebottom and Isaac Heeney.

Then you claim he doesn't have "elite disposal efficiency" like Pendlebury. Pendlebury is 74% Heppell is 71%. Since when is a difference between 74% and 71% the difference between elite and non-elite disposal efficiency? You say he doesn't apply tackling pressure like Selwood? Selwood has 4.9 per game and Heppell 4 per game. Selwood has a grand total of 13 tackles more for the year, 89 - 76.

So much for your arbitrary categories. He's not mediocre, in fact he's strong in all those areas. Amazing how much better he is than so many of the names you've reeled off in all the categories you've picked bar the one you think proves the point. lol.

But best of all, you completely miss the exact trait that makes Heppell as good or better than any of his peers. - Heppell is a big game player who has the rarest of rare talents - the ability to impose himself onto the contest by pure will and change the course of the game. The reason I find your drivel so amusing is that he did exactly that on the weekend, and single-handedly won Essendon the game. 34 disps (14 kicks 20 hballs), 10 marks (including two backing back into a pack, one of which was a match-saver), 6 tackles and a goal.

Anyway, it's been fun. It's always funny to serve it up to someone who thinks that for some inexplicable reason everyone else is wrong but they are right.

1. Erm, Pendlebury Kelly have both missed games, Steven gets tagged every game. Bont plays forward alot these days. Both Pendlebury and Kelly averages more clearances a game than Heppell.

2. Ok he really doesn't lmao.

3. Compare him with more players who don't play as much inside midfield minutes as him. Shiel doesn't tackle because he's the aggressor at contests and his role is to breakfree with clearances instead of tackling. If you watch GWS play, it's clear that they have players like Conigilio and Ward doing the defensive work around contests.

I'm not even going to continue reading, you can't even get your stats right. Oh look, Heppell has kicked more goals than Ablett who's missed 1/3 of the season, he must be more competent as a forward too... Christ this post hurts my brain to read.

about all I expected from you really. Feel free to not rate Heppell all you like. You're in a tiny minority so ultimately who gives a s**t

in a thread solely designed to rate the 2010 draft, you think a discussion over opinions of one of the 2010 draftees is derailing a thread?

Genius
