List Mgmt. 2015 AFL Draft

Mark Weideman presumably would have been very unhappy about being left out of the 1981 Grand Final team, having been in the Preliminary Final side and playing 20 games that year. With Peter Moore returning for the GF he lost his spot in the team. The fact that he stayed at Collingwood for another 3 seasons suggests he handled the situation okay.

I'm pretty sure he had quite a few injury problems, I just can't find any real evidence of that. He was sold to Fitzroy after the 1984 season, but failed to play a senior game there. I presume that injury hampered him at the Lions at least. Strangely, the biography on his Collingwood Forever page only mentions that he went to Coburg (this is an exact copy of what it says in Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers):-

Son of Murray, he was recruited from West Adelaide, but never established a regular senior place and later transferred to Coburg.

Moore on the other hand never recovered from the ignomy of playing injured in that finals series and costing us a premiership, and left for Melbourne. All forgiven now though!

Silvagni is very adept at trading out players for draft picks, he's done it very well at GWS. The problem with this strategy at Carlton though, is that they don't have 3-4 years worth of first round draft picks sitting in the reserves that he can trade out for new talent every year.

As it is, they've traded out Henderson and Yarran to gain first round picks this year, who are two of their better performed long term players, in addition to a former first round pick in Menzel. Since they will be very unlikely to have the currency in their player stocks next year to attack the draft hard, they'd want to nail every single early pick they have this year. I'm not convinced that SOS has the ability as a recruiter to do that given his very hit and miss recruiting at GWS.

To be honest, I think Carlton would have been better served trying to get picks for next year, in what's reported to be a much stronger draft. In addition to that, Bolton needs to make wholesale changes to how their development program is run. He's going to have a baptism of fire going from an assistant at a club full of talented players to the rabble that is Carlton. There's every chance he could end up being Mark Neeld/Scott Watters MK II
I suspect that at Carlton they've finally been honest with themselves regarding the state of their list, and have been prepared to weaken their side with the idea of spending another year or two at the bottom (gathering early draft picks).

They may well be "planning" on getting the number one pick again next year, and perhaps even being a chance to qualify for a Priority Pick. I'm not quite sure what the PP rules are these days, but another season like 2015 should give them a chance.

Can't imagine it was that hard at GWS to trade out players, most were young kids who wanted out.

And a Carlton there's a massive exodus as well.

Jury massively out on Silvagni.
How bad must Carlton be? Players are actually leaving & going to Brisbane...
Talk about out of the frying pan & into the fire.

SOS once again has it easy again this year, Theres clear players that they'll get (Should but hey its Carlscum) and he'll be lorded as a champion recruiter, When he really isn't, His strike rate is terrible compared to other recruiters, He fits well at his scumland.

Too true, but O'Rourke, Plowman, and Jaksch may still all be very good players so a bit early to suggest they were poor picks. Agree, with the full benefit of hindsight, Stringer, Wines and Macrea are arguably 1-2-3 from that draft but all just starting their careers.
Put aside the players GWS might have picked; the players they've traded away are not showing much. O'Rourke is unsurprisingly struggling to break into the Hawthorn side, no shame in that, but Plowman got traded for a packet of chips and Jaksch hasn't been able to get a game at the wooden spooners. It is mathematically possible that these guys are late bloomers, but the odds are against it.

Surely they would be budgeting to be in the top three at least. If you finish last and trade out your few remaining decent players (excluding PC) it gets hard to see where the improvement comes from

I doubt that they would get a Priority Pick, even if they finish bottom again. Melbourne at their lowest point were refused a PP, and they were probably the biggest basketcase we've seen for a long time. Carlton won't be able to trade away senior players for good picks, such as Henderson, Yarran and even Menzel, and argue that they need a Priority pick. 5 picks in the first 20 odd this year should be enough to start the build.

Cal Twomeys 2015 Phantom Draft:

Draft picks: 27, 64, 71, 74, 75 (likely to use three selections)

Once the first-round bids have come, Collingwood's first selection is likely to be pushed back to about No.31. They have shown some interest in Mason Redman, a South Australian medium forward, and have also put some time into Bailey Williams, a raw but talented 187cm prospect who has bolted in with a chance at the national draft. Brayden Fiorini and Aidyn Johnson are also in the mix should they get through the 20s, as might be potential Swans father-son Josh Dunkley. If they bid at 31, what would the Swans do? The Pies could also be looking for a mature-age option later in the draft, having shown some interest Marcus Adams and their VFL player Ben Moloney. Jake Lovett, who Melbourne overlooked as a father-son selection, is a shot perhaps in the rookie draft.

In case anyone has questions about the new draft bidding and all, Emma Quayle has come up with this:

Cheers H:thumbsu:
So if I'm reading it correctly Sydney who won the flag in 2012, finished top of the ladder last year, made the GF, is regularly at the the top end of the ladder year after year, remarkably recruited Franklin, was gifted Heeney in 2014 and can select academy players at a 20% point reduction?

If so thank goodness the AFL is successfully equalizing the draft system for the benefit of a truly fair and equitable national competition.

I want Mason Redman. Purely because...

Mason Redman sounds a good fit. 187cm marking forward. Would add to the SA mafia.

I would say outside fast midfielders, small forwards and key forward/key defender are all much bigger needs

Not asking for much Kappa! :p

Give me a Sam Mitchell (pick 36) over a fast midfielder any day........my point is at pick 31? beggars can't be choosers.
