I’m setting my expectations on it being whoever survives past 5 out of Naughton and Fogarty.

I can’t add much that hasn’t already been said of Fogarty, but Naughton is a deadset ringer for Lever up until he has ball in hand. That slightly awkward running gait and sticky hands are Lever all over. He’s an elite intercept defender (with production at WAFL level) and unlike Lever has the scope to play KP.

With the likes of Scharenberg, Langdon, Howe and Crisp around him who are all 20ppg players I think they’ll say that we can work on his ball use enough to prevent him being a liability distributing it to others.

I will seriously be pissed if we settle on Naughton at pick 6. Like someone pissed in my cornflakes angry.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Will Kelly did factor into our thinking a bit; I mean it already supposedly has at trade week.

We could be looking at picking up Crameri as a DFA and placeholder for Lynch, having Moore and Reid as interchangeable forwards/backs, Dunn down back with McLarty getting some game time...

Having said all that, I had a dream last night we took Brander at #6. I was ok with it... I think.

To play devil's advocate.

What if a Judd/Dangerfield/Pendlebury/D.Martin come from LDU, Dow, Cerra, Rayner respectively? And Brander becomes Dawes, Naughton becomes Michael Talia, Balta becomes S.Frost and Fogarty becomes Jackson Paine?

Rayner, LDU, Cerra and Dow are the four clear standout talents on another level with the scope to be stars and probability to be at least very high level performers. While the talls on the other hand really are coin flips.

Pick 38 I'm down for a key defender. If any of Petty/Taylor/Clavarino are there, and I'm expecting at least one of the three to be there, that's an easy decision as a long term piece that fits the lists needs and also represents solid value.

At pick 6 though, if it's me, I'm going with one of my four stars if they get through. If it's Cerra who is the more likely of the three. I'd more than happily play him forward as even up forward while it was only a small glimpse, kicking 3 goals and 5 behinds in a half is ridiculous stuff.
If none of those preferred four of mine are there, I'm completely with you. Go tall. Take the chance. And my personal choice is Balta - though Naughton/Fogarty are probably the direction I'm more so expecting Collingwood to look.
I just can't deny going for value, when you're talking about a probably star v someone who may not make it.

Smart teams fill their list needs through free agency and the trade period and put themselves in positions where they can just go into the draft and take the best player. Collingwood aren't yet one of those smart teams, but perhaps next year if they take a shot at and succeed in signing Tom Lynch from Gold Coast, maybe it's stepping towards that.
I'm OK with this. If their is a clear "big 4" in this upcoming draft that ahead of the rest and one of them slides to pick 6; then i'm OK if Collingwood drafts them.

But if the big 4 is gone by pick 6, then draft a key position player please.

I know. You’ve made it quite clear :)

I’m with you the majority of the way and there’s no way I’d have the stones to bring another average user into the mix, but the problem is all the guys at the pointy end of this draft have ?’s over their game aside from LDU and Dow, IMO.

That leads to the next question of if they all have problem areas who has the best mix of positive traits and can we work on those problem areas? I think they’ll throw a blanket over that group which includes Cerra (is he talented enough for us to go a mid), Stephenson (kicking), Fogarty (best position and production), Bonar (injuries), Higgins (size), Coffield (is he a mid long term), Naughton (kicking) and Brander (marking).

Given our interest in Lever and Naughton’s mix of traits I’m in preparation for the worst mode. If we did land on him and managed to pluck Wooller at 38 I’d walk away content so it’ll be an interesting month ahead, IMO.

Is Coffield a need though? Medium defenders aren't probably a priority right now.
We have Langdon, Crisp, Schaz & Maynard all playing defensive roles at the moment.
Yes Maynard can be released to the midfield, but we are already well stocked for medium defenders.

The only knock I can have on Naughton is that kicking style. He appears to have some elite defender's traits like body positioning, reading the play, lateral vision and one on one strength. Having said that, whilst his style is awkward and "floaty" it seems effective and he seems to think very quickly and makes good decisions.

I won't be checking a tanty if we draft him (albeit i prefer a couple of others).

Still reckon NMaughton's kicking issues are way overrated. Those who've seen in the the WAFl say he's been like a duck to water at CHB.

I reckon he makes the right decisions, but needs to work on technique a bit.

I'd kill for us to bring in a decent KPD. Hope McLarty mkaes it, but despite encouraging signs, he's a a tad slow and no sure thing. I reckon Naughton is a lock.

Coffield long term is a mid.

I’m not going to pretend that I know enough about this year’s draft to make an informed decision on who I hope we take. I’m paying more attention give that we have pick 6, and I kind of hope we take Tyler Brown f/s for sentimental reasons, but I don’t have the expertise to say who I hope we take for our first selection.

But here is what I do hope. I know that key position is something we need some depth on, but I hope we don’t draft a KPP with our first selection just because they are KPP. First and foremost I want an elite talent kid with that selection. If they also happen to fill the KPP need so be it.

I think pace and skill is a need. He doesn’t play like Langdon and Shaz in the intercept marking role. So he will probably only be fighting for a spot with Crisp because I think Maynard will he moved up the field. Coffield can also start on the HFF/Wing.

Went to his GWS interview and asked SOS to tell him why he’d want to play for a club manufactured by the AFL with no history or something along those lines. Also allegedly responded to Mark Neeld at Melbourne saying his hair made him look soft by saying that he’d fit right in with their soft midfield.

Does Shaz actually play an intercept marking role. I've never noticed him being third man up in a marking contest.

He’s probably has been play more as a 3rd lockdown defender because of Langdon and Howe. But he does from time to time drop back and fill in gaps. That’s his best position imo.

He did in the VFL this year, but was forced in to a more accountable role in the seniors with Howe and Langdon playing as interceptors.

Interesting article here

https://coupler.foxsports.com.au/ap...s/news-story/694c80bce012b019f895d6c997609700

Seems to be a similar article every year but we don't usually get any mention.

Brayshaw was one of five players that recounted to foxfooty.com.au the moment they had to choose which fruit best represented them — a question that seemed to come frequently from representatives wearing black and white polo tops.

“They showed me a page of different fruits — oranges, apples, bananas — and then I had to pick which fruit I related to my football and why,” Brayshaw said.

“I was going to go real deep and meaningful by saying I was a banana, because when you peel away the layers blah blah blah. But I ended up giving a stock standard answer, picking banana because I like to have one pre-game — something stupid like that.

“I guess there’s a reason why they always ask questions like that.”

Pick 1 favourite Paddy Dow was asked the same question but “just talked some smack, I came up with something”, while top 10 chance Jarrod Brander chose a banana because he’s “tall and skinny ... I had nothing else”. Calder Cannons utility Noah Balta said he “couldn’t figure out what the question had to do with anything”.

Andrew Brayshaw after competing in the Yo-Yo test.
But WA defender Sam Taylor was pretty happy with his response to the curveball.

“I chose watermelon but I was so confused,” Taylor said.

“I said that because I’m hard on the outside and soft on the inside. They loved it.”

I'm sure we spoke to pretty much everyone there. Maybe we have to? But honestly don't think Bradshaw is too bad a prospect.

Agreed. He has great pace and good footskills, and can take the game on. Definitely a big need for us.

I’d be fine with Brayshaw he’s a good footballer. We also interviewed Rayner so I’m sure they interview most of the top 10.
The only thing I cared about was that we interviewed Balta. :D
