Our forward line is not the issue. It is getting the ball into the forward line that is the problem.
Correct. The stats show that in 2019 the swans had one of the best score conversion ratios in the league. Our forwards actually went alright. If we can keep that ratio and get the ball into the 50 more often then we win a lot more games. Our problem is in the midfield, not our forwards.

i like this quote from the Sam Edmund article on Brad Crouch.

With clubs like Geelong and Gold Coast knowing they would have to cough up a significant price to secure the 25-year-old, snaring him for no outlay under free agency rules in 12 months’ time holds appeal.

That grade 4 level logic seems to escape some ....

How much closer does 5 and 9 get us to winning a flag with buddy?

Who cares about winning a flag with Buddy.

Yeah it would be nice but I'd rather us have a good chance at sustained success over the next decade than send the list plummeting in a desperate and unsuccessful push for Buddy to win a flag as a Swan.

And 'plummeting' may sound drastic, but think about it. Daniher would be on, or close to, seven figures. That would mean that, again, we'd have two forwards taking a fair bit of $. I don't think Heeney is far off that mark either. Ditto our current leaders (Kennedy and Parker) and future leaders (like Mills.) We'd have the list in almost the exact position we were in a few years ago when we lost decent players to accommodate these big contract blokes. Last time it was Mitchell and Mumford, what if next time it's a Dawson or a Florent or a Rowbottom or a McCartin, guys who we're actually banking our future success on?

we should be trying to win the flag every year

Compare our list to teams that have experiences sustained periods on the bottom of the ladder.

We're far too good to be rebuilding. Should be trying to get back in finals and competing as soon as next year.

So two blokes who are never on the park instead of one?
Obviously the club believes they can get him on the park or we wouldn't be offering him $800k.

we finished 15th for one year with a percentage of 97.7

There is no evidence that we need to get Daniher or we are headed for a sustained period at the bottom of the ladder.

What do you mean we're far too good to be rebuilding?

We're bottom four because we're rebuilding!

Some patience is needed here. The last thing we need to be doing is throwing the baby out with the bathwater because we don't like the taste a bottom four finish leaves in our mouth. And taking on another big contract player who would compromise the list and our future team (that we've sacrificed ladder positions to work on) would be drop-punting the baby out with the bathwater.

That's not the point. The point is Daniher is a player that can take you to a Premiership. This list actually isn't that far off winning a flag. It's a move that a team trying to win a flag would make, so we should make it.

We finished with a percentage of 97.7%. Like Brisbane last year, despite our lack of wins, it's plain to see that we're not that far off finals. Heck, while we had some horror losses, for the most part we actually went with teams like Geelong, Collingwood, Richmond, Brisbane and GWS, and only lost because of small patches. We also belted West Coast. We weren't really comprehensively outplayed by most of the top 8 sides. Our list isn't far off being good enough to compete for a flag. We should make moves that teams trying to win a flag would make.

It's never that simple Kingy you know that.

I recall last year you saying you'd take a drop down to the bottom end of the ladder if it meant focusing on the future, getting games into kids, changing the way we play etc.

Well, you got your wish, all of those things happened, and we finished at the bottom end of the ladder. Now that we're down here and you don't like it, you want us to start making risky moves to get us back up ASAP. And can you, as someone who has said the clubs made list management mistakes in recent years, honestly say that Daniher wouldn't be a risk?

So you'd rather us enjoy a lovely few years at the bottom of the ladder rather than actually make some aggressive moves to try to shoot back up the ladder? Being happy with mediocrity isn't a good message to send to players that might want to come here.

You don't need to tell me! I have enormous faith in this group to achieve success in the near future. Which is exactly why I don't think we need to be adding players like Daniher to our list to compromise what we've spent the last few years carefully and methodically building.

we are a mile away from a flag. trending in the right direction. But you need a core group of 23-30 year old strong hardened senior AFL players (as in 15-18 of them) along with 5-6 A graders and we aren't near that currently.

We are getting there, and investing through the draft, while it won't make a big difference next year or even the following one, it means that when we do enter that premiership window (i think probably from 2022 onwards) we can have a sustained period of success rather than pulling the ripcord this year and hoping Daniher is the second coming of Buddy.

If you think we can shoot back into contention, adding players like Daniher is exactly what we SHOULD be doing.

This is completely unsubstantiated. You don't need your list to be centred around any age bracket. You need your list to be better than the lists of opposition sides. Daniher is a step towards achieving that and gives us a lethal forward line.

We need Daniher because Franklin probably has 20-30 games left him in and we lost a number of games this year because of his absence. Not that we would have made the 8 but we could have finished higher.

If a player of Daniher’s ability wants to come to Sydney we should make it happen within reason.

Midfielders grow on trees while key forwards don’t.
