What are the draft watchers' thoughts on Miles Bergman? I've been super impressed by him every time I've seen him talk and his combine results but havent caught any game footage of him in action.

Is being talked up as in the mix around 10-20 so would be around the mark for our picks I'd think.

ehhh
I look at him as in a normal draft year he would be a 30-40 draft pick.

Well the good new is that we are in the "sweet spot":tonguewink:

SANFL talent manager Brenton Phillips believes the AFL draft has a “sweet spot

...............

Phillips argues that those players who get picked in the middle of the first round, the “sweet spot’’ as he calls it, have the ideal scenario because their clubs are “on the move’’ but have holes that need immediate filling by their top draft choices. “This is just my theory but I think it stands up,’’ he said. “If you get picked from one to six as a player you are in a difficult window because you obviously are a very good footballer, there is no question about that.

“But unfortunately sometimes you go to a club that is struggling to win games and it’s a hard game to play when you go to an environment where, one, the team is struggling to win, and, two, the players around you aren’t at the same level as the top echelon clubs. If you go from pick seven to 12, to me that is your sweet spot, because those clubs are on the move somewhere, they are going, so you are going into an environment that can lend you to jumping in and playing a role, like (AFL Rising Star runner-up) Connor Rozee did for Port Adelaide this year.

“He played the role that they wanted him to play and he played it very well because he’s a very talented footballer, and away he goes. In contrast, (fellow South Australian) Jack Lukosius goes to Gold Coast at pick two, they are trying to find a spot for him, moving him all over the place, and they are struggling to win, so his numbers aren’t going to look as good.

“At the other end of the spectrum, if you go in that 13 to 18 bracket, you are usually going to a side that is hard to break into.’’

.......

Claims 7-12 is the sweet spot. Uses last years pick 5 as an example :D

I think both Mead and Pickett are in the same boat. Both could be good, both could be in and out of the system in 2 years without playing a game. Neither would surprise me.

I think Picketts got further to go to get up to the standard required. He's all butter, no bread at the moment.
Good call macca,

Im basing my thoughts on the fact mead has been brought up in the afl type system with his old man as coach. They had a playbook at west lakes u14s and for all of his time there, mead was a dedicated young footballer, dedicating himself to his craft, eating right and looking after himself. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this but im worried whether there is another level there and that we will pay way too a high price for him, whereas pickett wasn't the same, he is very raw and plays on instinct, needs fitness, dedication and knowledge on the game but if he gets this, wow he could be anything.

Not sure that is that attractive to our recruiters, they love the bland at the moment, too scared to take any risks.

The crowd loves rozee cause he plays on instinct, loved winguard when he played on instinct, the crowd will love pickett, hes like liam ryan except with a nasty streak.

For **** sake parker pick pickett.

And also we traded for the Rozee pick anyway, which defeated his whole point about 7-12 being the sweet spot because of the ladder positions of the teams you'd be joining. Butters would've made a lot more sense as an example.

He should have used all three of Rozee, Butters and Duursma as examples and then decided against publishing the article.

Agree on Pickett.

I only saw him live in the reserves GF. He had 3 minutes of wow combined with nothing at all for the rest of the game. Didn't like his lack of chase.

Phillips does not impress me. I can't give examples but he has backed in players who have failed. His time in charge of the U18s was uninspiring in terms of both results and players drafted. He strikes me as another SANFL numpty.

He was our numpty for a little while.

In principle he is actually spot on with with Rozee. Our #5 pick to get Rozee was not indicative of our final position. We were actually a #10-pick side, so slot nicely into that sweet spot group of clubs.

And yes, you can add Butter into it as some have suggested, but that really isnt the point Phillips was making. He is really talking about the top-end, top-10 talent, where they are better off going. So he used Rozee as an example. he could easily have also mentioned Bailey-Smith, Jones, Thomas, or Blakey. But he probably used Rozee as an example because he is an SA boy, in an SA article.

Found one that was just extended this year yet? These are players getting their contracts bought out.

Archie Smith extended his contract this year. (Brisbane ) He was de-listed by Brisbane with the promise of being picked in the main or rookie draft if available. (He will probably find a home as a dfa )

Sam Skinner was also delisted. He got through the year without busting his knee. He would be my clear pick for a dfa.

Melbourne list manager reckons they are considering Jackson, which makes perfect sense when you consider that Gawn will be 29 going into next season and all they have is Preuss and a rookie as their ruck stocks. Hence why they traded out of next years draft and into this one by getting North's Pick 8.

They are also considering using 3 to bid on Green. This is probably to make sure that GWS can't select Jackson with 6 (another club that is interested in him).

Luke Jackson is going top ten.

Good. A ruckman in top 10 means more chance of us picking a midfielder/kpp we want.

I watched a bit of WA recently and i think Jackson, Henry and Robertson need to go in the top ten...which makes it more of a top 13 (Rowell, Anderson, Green, Young, Serong, Flanders, Ash, Kemp, Stephens, Gould) and that's not including McAsey/ Worrell / Weightman. I'm pretty much going off McAsey at pick 12. Prefer Hilder/Finlay at pick sixty something or McCasey/Worrell at 18.

If either Freo or GWS have to use top 10 bids on Green or Henry, we get one of your top 13. If not, we don't. Weightman may actually round off a top 14- one of which we can get.

Henry is really good! Would love him at Port. I think he dislocated his knee late in the season. These kids are all broken before they get to a club!

Pickett reminds me of a daniel rioli type. If he gets recruited to the right club/luck like hawthorn he will flourish. If he goes to us just remains talented scrap heap like neade v2

Why does the draft have to be so far away? Here is my guess for the draft.

1 GC Rowell
2 GC Anderson
3 Mel Young
4 GWS Green
5 Adel Flanders
6 Syd Serong
7 Fre Jackson
8 Fre Henry
9 Mel Ash
10 Carl Kemp
11 Haw Stephens
12 Port Weightman
13 WB McAsey
14 Geel Robertson
15 GC Gould
16 Bris Sharp
17 Geel Worrell
18 Port Rivers
